“The most fantastic place to stay in Rio!”
Reviewed 6 March 2014

This is probably one of my favourite places I have stayed in a very long time. The location is beautiful and peaceful - a complete contrast to the beaches of Ipanema and Copacobana. The staff are so friendly and really help you get the most out of your stay. Rooms are spacious, breakfast was divine and it was lovely having a pool. All I can say is do yourself a favour - if you are going to Rio, stay at Casa Cool Beans - you won't regret it!

Apart from the excellent location to visit basically all places in Rio de Janeiro, Casa Cool Beans is a beautiful property with excellent rooms (the best in Brazil during our 3 week trip - 8 B&B's). The breakfast is extremely relaxing and Lance & Sergio are the most perfect host. Every morning they will help you to plan your day, which is most welcome in a city that you only know from the guide... Locals do know more. We might just travel through Rio to another South American country, just to meet Lance and Sergio again and stay at this excellent property!

If there's vacancy stay at this BandB.
*If you are lucky enough to get a room here it's almost guaranteed you'll fall in love with Rio.
*It's in THE best neighborhood (think San Francisco meets New Orleans)...
*Lance worked for the Four Seasons for many years so brings that level of service and attention to detail to an EXTREMELY chill, laid back place.
*You will want for nothing: perfect breakfast, helpful staff, comfortable beds, air conditioning, pool, great location.
*Lance and Sergio are *extremely* kind and helpful and generous.
*I literally cried when I had to leave. I CRIED LEAVING A BED AND BREAKFAST!!!! It's that good.
*Stay here. Or try to, at least.

We spent 6 nights here at the start of our holiday. We couldn't have chosen a better place. Lance, Sergio and the housekeeping staff looked after us so well. We had a lovely big room overlooking the garden and a spacious bathroom with a great shower. The breakfast on the pool terrace was very special. We spent the days exploring Rio and visiting the main sites but were alway happy to return to Santa Theresa for the evenings. It was a 5 minute walk to a good selection of restaurants and bars. The surrounding area was fun to explore on foot with beautiful houses and green views looking over Rio.

Casa Cool Beans is in a Santa Teresa, which is a great place to stay in Rio. Santa Teresa has some really good bars and restaurants and it's not too far (about 15-20 mins) to get to some of the main sights in Rio.

The room was very nicely furnished and clean and the breakfast on the top patio was amazing - lots of great fruit and different handmade cakes every morning.

The thing that made it for us was Lance's insider info on all of the best places to visit. He really helped us fit in a huge amount into 4 days that I don't think would have been possible without him. He was generally incredibly friendly and took a genuine interest in his guests, which was very much appreciated.

My husband and I started our South American adventure in Rio and chose to stay at Casa Cool Beans after reading some of the reviews. This is a very nice, chilled B&B which is in the suburb of Santa Teresa. It is way out of town but there are buses and taxis to take you where you want to go. Be warned that Santa Teresa is extremely hilly so is not easy to walk around if you are unfit, but there is a bar close by and a few other bars and restaurants about ten minutes walk away. Cool Beans is run by Lance, from San Diego (one of the owners), his partner David (whom we did not meet) and Sergio the manager. Lance knows everything about the area and will spend as much time as you need advising on what to do and where to go. He and his staff are delightful and will do everything possible to make you comfortable. They sent a car to pick us up from the airport as we had a late arrival and the driver was there waiting for us when we arrived. There is a steep flight of stairs to get up to the first level where the office and some of the rooms are and another to get up to the roof terrace where there are further rooms, a nice deck with a small pool and comfortable chairs and loungers. Breakfast is also served on this level. Small buffet and then fresh eggs cooked to order and good strong coffee. Lance goes to the market every morning for fresh fruit, cheese and bread. He also presented me with a lovely gift on leaving.

One warning; there are mosquitoes on the terrace and in the ground floor garden in the afternoon, so use plenty of spray

Room Tip: We had Room 4 is huge with two double beds and very quiet, except for the fans. The rooms are fairl...

This B&B offers comfortable rooms, spacious and air conditioned, a great shower, and a very friendly and helpful manager named Sergio. The rooms have no telephone or television. Breakfast is served on an upstairs patio, with fresh fruit, yogurt, breads, and made-to-order eggs daily. There is a very small swimming pool near the breakfast area, with several comfortable lounge chairs nearby. There are quite a few rooms, and most are accessed by a long flight of stairs, and additional stairs for some.
The area of Santa Theresa is an older part of the city, full of charm and cobblestone streets. It is on a hilltop with many ups and downs for walking the streets, felt more acutely probably because of the 90+ heat and high humidity. Something to be aware of is that taxi drivers are apparently not accustomed to making the long uphill cobblestone climb! After dinner in the more downtown area one night, we had to ask a dozen drivers before one could be persuaded to take us back. And that included a no show cab called by the head waiter for us!
Sergio went out of his way to help us in many different ways. We are very grateful to him, and feel he is one of the most positive aspects of a stay here. It must be said that we were shocked at the additional charge assessed by Lance, the owner of the B&B, for an airport transfer on our arrival. Due to a schedule change we only learned about on reaching the airport we were flying in from, we arrived 3 hours later than planned, and instead of an $80 charge, we were billed $170 for our group of 4 (a figure we found arbitrary to say the least). Our van driver at home keeps track of flight schedules, and adjusts. We do not pay for "waiting time" - keeping track is part of that job. Our airport return ride using an airport dedicated cab cost $50/4 people, considerably less than our original $80 expected cost.
Where our plane left very late in the day, we appreciated Sergio' s offer to "hang out" in our room as long as we needed to. It was very gracious of him, and a good example of the quality level of service he provided.

Room Tip: Room #3 beside office is large, on a corner, with 3 Windows and a nice view.

Thank you so much for your review. As we discussed here at the B&B, your flight was CANCELLED. Per our Airport Pick Up conditions, we REQUIRE an updated flight number when a flight is cancelled. It is IMPOSSIBLE for a Driver to follow a flight which has been cancelled. The Driver was there for your original flight trying to resolve the issue as we had no correspondence from you. Only after HOURS at the airport and working with the airline representative, was this Driver able to find out the NEW flight # and arrival time (hours later). You stated at the B&B when this was discussed that you held the AIRLINE accountable, not us; so these remarks strike us as backhanded and odd. But in any event, yes, we did charge you for BOTH pick ups as that was fair.
