“Hotel in fairy land”
Reviewed 8 November 2013

Wonderful ambiance, excellent amenities, heartfelt service. The best hotel experience in a long time. Rita Hoppner Residenz in Garamado, Brazil is a place out of time. The city itself is like being in a Christmas German town--in Brazil! The hotel is luxurious. The rooms are well-appointed. Imagine having a private pool in your suite that's heated 24 hours. I'm told there is no natural hot spring here! The culture for customer service of each person in the hotel is superb. Nothing is impossible and every suggestion is to ensure the guests' feeling of well-being. Families can enjoy Mini Mundo, what used to be the owners' kids playground and now a theme park with hundreds of miniature buildings and community accoutrements inspired by real palaces and mansions and buildings around the world, especially Europe. Shoppers would be ecstatic at the Main Street which boasts of products that could easily be sold in European shops for a lot less. A lot of nearby towns to visit as well. Just visit!

Hotel Ritta Hoppner is one of the best hotels in Gramado, as well as in the whole country. Perfectly structured, excellent location and wonderful staff. Honeymooners and children can enjoy the hotel premises equally. It will please everybody! A car is not a must, but would easy your life and make your stay an unforgettable one, specially if dining out (there are such wonderful restaurants in downtown Gramado, that it would be a pity to miss them). Much has been already written about Hotel Ritta Hoppner and I'm sure you will have a great time in beautiful Serra Gaúcha. Enjoy!

Room Tip: A secluded chalet for honeymooners and the main building for families and children.

My husband and I stayed here for our belated honeymoon in June of 2013. We absolutely loved our stay at the Hotel Ritta Hoppner, so I think this may be a lengthy review.

For our stay, we were in a chalet with a private terrace and an indoor heated pool. We went during peak season so prices were a bit steep (though not the most expensive in town), and we thought it well worth the cost. The chalet includes a small entry room with table, chairs and mini bar, leading into the bedroom with beautiful wood-carved furnishings and a large, round bed, then into a long, modern bathroom, finally ending in the heated pool area. You can choose not to use the pool and save R$70/night (about 35 USD). We had it for one night of our stay and they give you a key to enter the room, otherwise it remains locked. Definitely worth it for at least one night, especially in winter! Chalets come equipped with AC and heaters in every room. We thought the linens were a bit old/dated and didn't match the theme, but otherwise the room was fabulous. Ornate crown molding and a chandelier over the bed - q romântico!

They also offer a variety of romantic packages for honeymoons, etc. We purchased the upper-mid-range package, which included a decor of rose petals and candles in our chalet upon arrival, champagne, a fruit plate, and at a later date/time of our choosing, in-room couple's massages and chocolate fondue for two. Great value, certainly worth more than we paid (R$300 total, about 150 USD).

The chalets are behind the main office building, which includes a plush lobby area with vintage decor and plenty of space to lounge or curl up with a good book. Across the small avenue is the main building with traditional hotel rooms above their Otto Restaurant. The restaurant continues the vintage theme, beautifully decorated. Breakfast is included in your stay, and they have a huge selection. Not only a large buffet, but also a mini-menu at your table if you want them to whip up something fresh, like Belgian waffles, crepes, etc. Great coffee and a variety of juices included.

Between 4 and 6pm every day, they also serve "Chá da Tarde," or afternoon tea. This is in the typical "English" style with coffee & tea choices and an array of finger foods on a 3-tiered tray: tortes, pastries, mini sandwiches, and of course, Brazilian salgados. I'm not sure about the usual price, but we didn't pay anything; I think there was a promotion going on during our stay. We also had dinner at Otto's one night, though I recommend going into town other nights to sample international cuisines (German, French, Italian, fondue). At any rate, dinner at Otto's was great, and similarly priced to other restaurants in town (expensive by Brazilian standards, though only slightly above average for Americans).

Another perk about HRH is the location: it's within easy walking distance of the main avenue (5 min) which has a huge variety of restaurant options. A little further is the downtown area (about 15 min) to visit the Rua Coberta ("covered street"), the stone church, the festival cinema, and lots of small clothing and chocolate shops. There is also an historical trolley tour nearby that leaves several times a day off the main avenue, not far from the hotel ("Jardineira das Hortênsias").

In the opposite direction, about a 10-min walk is the small Rodoviaria (bus station) where you can pick up a circuit bus to the neighboring town of Canela for R$2.10 (~20 min). You can also get a bus to the Porto Alegre Airport for about R$30/person (~2 hrs). Along the same street are a lot more clothing stores and restaurants; the options seem limitless.

Meanwhile, the neighborhood surrounding Hotel Ritta Hoppner is rather upscale by Brazilian standards, and quite clean and safe. My husband and I are currently expats living in Sao Paulo state, and Gramado feels like a totally different world. (It felt quite safe to walk at night, which is unheard of in other parts of the country.) We took a nice stroll around our first day there. You'll run into one of the two lakes in Gramado (Lagoa Joaquina Rita Bier) by walking towards the bus station from the hotel (~5 min). In the other direction, about 2 km, is the popular Lago Negro, or Black Lake. I'd recommend getting a cab there (it's slightly uphill), but taking a nice leisurely walk back (~20 min).

All of the staff at HRH were incredibly friendly, bending over backwards to make us happy in a very warm and natural way. Some spoke a bit of English; my Portuguese is only pre-intermediate level, so this was very helpful. (Most didn't speak English because they aren't used to foreign visitors, though it is a very popular destination for Brazilians).

TripAdvisor brought us to the Hotel Ritta Hoppner as the #1 rated hotel in Gramado, and we were over the moon about our stay. Highly, highly recommended.

Room Tip: Choose a chalet for a quieter, more private romantic experience. (Heated pools are a must!)

We just came back from a wonderful 4 night visit to Ritta Hoppner. The hotel is beautiful and charming and very family friendly. The General Manager Marcio gets 5 stars for sure! He was FANTASTIC and very hands-on. Checking out today, I believe they were understaffed at breakfast and Marcio put on an apron and began to help out in the kitchen and at guest tables. Also, my son got hurt at Mini Mundo and he took us to the hospital and waited with us until we were released and then said he would make sure the sign where my son got cut would be repaired immediately. Overall, the stay was amazing and the hotel is very unique. The only suggestions I would make would be to install flat screen tvs in the rooms and hire another waiter or two for breakfast/tea time since a lot of guests and demand! otherwise, it was perfect and the farewell bag of cookies and water was a really sweet touch. the kids loved the cookie bag! thanks for a wonderful stay and we look forward to a future visit!

Room Tip: we were in the main hotel and very comfortable for a family b/c of kitchenette and extra room for ki...

We spent 3 nights at the hotel. What a great staff, place, food and nature! The kids loved the pool area. The indoor pool was a pleasant place to wake up in the morning. The Minimundo was also cute. We went horseback riding at Fazenda Passo Alegre - a genuine and great experience in great nature. The hotel helps arranging trips. Coming back to afternoon tea with cakes was a highlight. The dinner was very well made. Great value for money.

This is by all criteria the best place to stay in Gramado, in the Brazilian Deep South. Rita Höppner has an excellent service, the German-styled rooms are cute, clean and cool, especially if you get one with a private warm pool. The Mini-Mundo is a must. The walk around the lake and neighborhood is real fun. I highly recommend this place for anyone from 3 thru 93 years old!
