Me and my wife had already stayed at Costa do Sauipe Resort in the state of Bahia for our honeymoon and were already impressed but since we arrived at Costao do Santinho, we had to raise the bar. For starters, Florianópolis is an amazing island-city. It's simply beautiful, the people is great and beautiful as well. Since it's a big island, you can imagine how many great and peaceful beaches there are there. And the one which this resort is by is just awesome!

The hotel is huge, has even a movie theater besides 5 different and great restaurants, many swimming pools including thermal ones. There's a very nice track where you can even see ancient drawings on the stones.

For those with babies and/or children, it's perfect! Lots of fun stuff to do, including an arcade, a big recreation place just for babies and, best of all: a whole recreation crew, all included, just to take care of children (not babies) during the entire day and even during the night too. They even take care of lunch.

For the babies, the hotel provides baby sitters that can be contracted by the hour (~$10/hour).

Their standard fare is all-inclusive, That means 4 of the 5 restaurants, a full-blown snack bar, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks all over the place, including beer, champagne and wine and even the beverage and amenities in your room are included.

The only thing you won't probably like there is the amount of pounds you'll put on :)

After reading some reviews here, I had to comment on Costao do Santinho. My expectations were very high after everything I read about this place. Not Florianopolis, but Costao do Santinho, the resort. I came here for a poker tournament, play during the day and have fun at night. What night? If you're single or with friends and like to check out the bar scene and go clubbing, I would stay away from this resort. It's too far from everything and all the clubs and bars I wanted to check out were in downtown, about 45-60 min. away.
The first couple of days were raining and freezing, so I won't count those days. When the sun finally showed, the beaches and scenery were awesome. If you surf, the waves have great breaks...probably very easy to learn. I hate hiking, but since there was really nothing to do, I hiked and the scenery was awesome. The people here are great too. The only reason I did not like this place is that there is absolutely no night life and they have one small bar with family and kids.
One other thing: the walls seem really thing as I heard the neighbor screaming and laughing. I was at the Villas. The International Hotel looked much more nicer. I'd also have to say that the resorts food was not the best. I never did make it to downtown as I did not speak any Portuguese and the locals suggest not to bring lots of cash or show off any bling.
Florianopolis the city sounds great and lots of fun. I would suggest staying at a nice hotel in downtown, mostly if by yourself. Costao do Santinho would not be as bad if you came in a group and took a cab around town. I'm not a club guy, but I was really hoping to check them out to see what the hype was about.
This is a great resort if you want to get away from everything and relax or if you have a family.

This is a famous resort in Brazil. Although I must admit the resort is good, I expected more of the staff, specially from those of the restaurants. The place is beautiful, although I did not have much time to enjoy it since I was attending a conference. The resort is also far from the centre of the island, and this was a drawback to me since the conference center was situated in downtown. I was also disappointed when I found out that I should pay to use the tennis courts.

For years in a row, Costao do Santinho has been awarded as the best beach resort in Brazil by a major travel magazine. But after being there on a 3-day sales convention, I'll have to disagree with that.

Ok, location is great, convention and recreational facilities are plenty and well equipped. Children will surely have the time of their lives.

However, here's a list of "disappointments" I had:

1) The rooms: at least the ones at Vila 10 were outdated and not functional. There were no light switches close do the bed, so I had to stand up and cross the room if I wanted them on or off. Wi-fi available, charged.

2) The restaurants: "all you can eat", buffet style. Food good, many protein options (meat, poultry, pork and seafood) available every meal. Restricted selection of drinks, though (for good beer lovers, this is a nightmare - all they have is Femsa's Sol...). Lines and careless service during peak hours. Considering the resort area and size, restaurants should be spread across Costao's facilities (today they are all located close to the beach). Depending on which Vila your room is, a considerable distance may reside between you and your meal.

3) Moving internally: although walking is not an issue to me, this can be a dangerous activity due to the traffic of hotel's vans, as posted in previous comments. Don't let little children all by themselves.

Overall, an average hotel in a beautiful place, not the best place to be if crowded.

We spent three nights at the resort. We received an upgrade from our beach view room to a beach superior (two floor) apartment. Rooms are clean and spacious. The resort is very big and you need to use an internal van system to get around. The all inclusive system is not that inclusive at all. To get a cocktail or even a snack you need to take a vehicle or walk for some 10 minutes. Even if you want to pay for room service there are only sandwiches available. Although close to the ocean, there is almost no fresh seafood variety. Go to the Bar del Pescador for snacks (petiscos). The food there is quite reasonable. The other restaurants will offer a buffet system. The beach is quite nice and clean although not necessarily for swimming (better for surfing). The resort has been awarded as the best in Brazil, but do not let this mislead you. Local guests might not be very demanding.

Our stay in Costao do Santinho was the 4th part of our honeymoon. It turned out to be a paradise in terms of physical environment and activities but rather mediocre in terms of hotel internal environment. But day by day as we discovered all that we could do in the area the first feeling of disappointment calmed down and enjoyed horse riding through the dunes and on the seaside (organised at low prices by the hotel), SPA, walking in the archaeological area, swimming in the pool. The room and the buildings were old-fashioned and had a smell of humidity. I can say that the bathroom was the best part of it offering a hydromassage tube with a nice view to the green hill and the camp. We tried the restaurant once and it was good enough. The fact that it was a low season period didn't help since the camp was less than half occupied letting out a feeling of isolation. You could not find nightlife unless you were in mood to drive downtown.
Don't miss the horse riding if you visit the area! A lifetime experience!
