“Amazing hostel experience!”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

I stayed at Tucano House for 2 nights and had a really great time. Fantastic location at the Lagoa de Conceição, great opportunities for nightlife and walking to Costa da Lagoa (2hrs) and Praia Mole (under 1 hr). The place was buzzing because of people travelling for the World Cup - a lot of Australians had chosen to stop over in Florianopolis between the two matches in Porto Alegre and Curitiba! The atmosphere was amazing and the hostel is perfect for solo travellers wanting to meet other people. The evening meals were not only delicious but a great chance to sit and chat to all the other travellers - meals were also reasonably priced at R$18-25 for main and pudding and free caipirinha for the first 10 to sign up! Marcio and the rest also organise excursions during the day, club nights and parties: I loved the forró night which was almost all locals and very few tourists apart from us! The staff are helpful and fun, I will definitely be back. 3 days in Floripa is not enough, it’s such a beautiful place and there is so much to do - and Tucano House is a great place to stay!

Me and a friend travelled south america for 3 months, staying in dozens of different hostels of extremely varying quality and I have to say that we both agreed this one was the best overall experience. Whilst it may not have been the best in some categories - The bathrooms were a bit small and not super clean, the rooms aren't the most spacious - you really won't care because you will be having the BEST time of your life! The size of the hostel is perfect, sleeping about 40 people at an estimate, this means the place always has a great feel to it, you get to know everyone staying there within 24 hours and you will instantly make great friends because the atmosphere is absolutely spot on!
The staff are super friendly and fun, the hostel has great common areas and they do an awesome-tasting buffet dinner EVERY night for 18 Reais with changing themes like Arabic, mexican, indian etc. this is a great way to meet people so highly recomended and even if you aren't eating, the outside bar/eating area just has the perfect chilled out, comfortable vibe. add to this the upstairs balcony with hammocks and mattresses and the cosy TV room and you are set.
The other great thing is the activities they organise, every day there is a trip out to somewhere on the island, whether it be beaches or other smaller islands, with Leo the tour guide. Plus they organise a night out for you basically every evening if you and your new friends want to go. The trips are reasonably priced for what they include. If you are there over the weekend you HAVE to go to the P12 Pool Party. It may be a little expensive but I promise you it was one of the most memorable experiences of my 3 month trip!
Honestly, I will probably remember this place for the rest of my life whenever I think about my trip, I already want to go back!

Tucarno House Backpackers is on a quiet residential street in Lagoa, the party hub of Florinopolis. The hostel is very clean, attended to throughout the day with great bar and outdoor facilities, perfect to relax after a night out.
The no noise policy and closing of the bar at 11pm ensure those who want to sleep can and the daily activities ensure you are able to make the most of Flori during your stay.
The beach is a 40 min walk - Mole - but you can get a bus for R3 each way which is cheap.
Family dinners are the main selling point, together with organised trips to P12.
Dont stay anywhere else, this place is the best.

Room Tip: The 10 bed dorm is great upstairs, quiet enough to sleep with ceiling fans ensuring a decent nights...

This hostel has a large number of awards on the wall touting it as the best hostel in Brazil/World with friendly staff and a great atmosphere etc... But we found that its living on its heyday as the last awards were from 2009/2010, with photos and thank you notes from guests also dating back to this time. The 'family feel friendly nature' has been replaced by a swarm of young workers who don't appear particularly interested in helping you and generally come across as bothered by the simplest requests.. Not one of them smiled throughout our entire stay, except the tour guide who came daily. The free bikes advertised on the website is patently false. The hostel, which originally housed 22 or so, now seems to have capacity for over 50 with no increase in amenities. The whole place feels overcrowded and dirty in the way only a place with too many people can.

Of all the hostels we've stayed in throughout South America whilst some were not as modern, new, clean or even waterproof as tucano, we've had the least enjoyable or comfortable time here. The whole place is run trying to portray the laid back surfer back packer atmosphere but beneath that very thin facade is the obvious workings of a tightly regimented commercial entity. There is a real focus on money in the place. Breakfast on the first day when we arrived early was available but would cost 18 reals, ok, fair enough, but then, the maps, cost r1, the sign in sheet says any discrepancies in the bar are to be shared between all guests, towels for rent, bikes for rent, overpriced trips every day ($25 reals for a transfer to a beach. For two of us, it would have been cheaper to take a taxi). The quality of the breakfast, was poor, and always running out, not to mention with day old fruit salads each morning and tiny bowls to use for it. Juice only available half the time. Signs saying "only one serving each". For a hostel that cost more than a beachside hotel on ilha bela, it had a decidedly strong feeling of being 'cheap'. The internet, whilst free, was on computers using freeware operating systems, appeared similar to normal OS but almost useless for anything beyond basic internet and word processing. The pool table was always being used for storage or deliveries. The 'many Cds and DvDs' were all scratched and barely worked. The majority being sex in the city and friends DVDs. The individual problems are inconsequential on their own, but all together came across as an overwhelming sense of being cheap. Its a very cliched backpackers hostel, not doing anything for the reputation of Australians, promoting nightly drinking and partying. The attempts at being full service by booking transport for people and supplying dinner each night, also didn't come across as helpful but rather another way of squeezing the dollar from their guests.

I had the distinct feeling that they don't trust the backpackers who come to the hostel, hence so many rules and regulations, not to mention the wrist band to 'wear at all times' like an ID badge in a primary school camp. I had a real feeling like everything we did we were being watched in case we somehow took more than we deserved or the hostel was somehow not making as much money off us as possible. Its hard to explain but not a very enjoyable stay.

On the plus side, it does have a good policy of last drinks 10:30 and quiet by 11 due to its location in a residential area, and the dog is adorable, being the most friendly and welcoming member of the crew. But beyond that its not much good to write home about and travellers should be warned of its reality.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else, there are many many other hostels in excellent locations. Don't believe the...

I recently stayed in Tucano house for nearly 2 weeks and completely fell in love with it.
The quality of accommodation is good but Tucano is much more than a place to stay. Every night there are well priced (usually 18 reals) meals that are incredible - nearly everyone in the hostel eats them every night. So it's incredibly easy to meet people. I barely spent any time alone during my stay.
The day trips are really good and the evening parties are always a laugh.
Best of all are the staff. I've never been made to feel so welcome in a hostel before, I celebrated my birthday during my trip and they brought me a cake and got the whole hostel to sing happy birthday to me.
I would return without a second thought - by far the best hostel that I've even stayed in. John

By far, the best overall hostel i have ever been in. Wonderfull atmosphere, unbelievable friendly and funny staff, that always wants to talk, have fun and give you a good time. They learn your name and make you feel like a friend. Good and fairly clean rooms and bathrooms, amazing dinner every night with different themes. Great daytours with funny and crazy guide Leo and good party tours every Night. You are NEVER bored here and you definitly dont wanna leave again. Met the best people during my 2 weeks stay.
