I've been at this hotel along time ago, and I 've had a good time. The plan was to spent a short holiday in Sao Paulo, resting and enjoying. Basically I chose this hotel, considering it offers sauna, swimming pool and fitness room. Once I'm there, I figured out that the sauna was closed for a maintenance; as well as many devices at fitness room, didn't operate. So frustrating. The hotel itself is ok, the staff is very attentive, it's clean, the breakfast is good, but unremarkable. If you are in town for business, alone, or in a very short stay, it can be a option. Excellent location.

Me and my girlfriend visted hotel during the carnival. It has very good location in vicinity if paulista avenue. It is excelent value for the money. We especially enjoyed friendliness of the staff and brazilian breakfast which includes a lot of tropical fruits.

Whilst centrally located this hotel is pretty basic and the room I had was lacking in several ways. Firstly, the furniture had stains on and was covered in pen as if a child had scrawled all over it. The Internet was so slow and intermittent, took several minutes to log on, could not stream, use Skype etc. The cable TV in room had a problem, the smart card slot was faulty. Three light bulbs were out in the bathroom. None of the staff cans peak English so trying to sort these problems out was very challenging. That said, I cannot fault the effort of the staff who were friendly and helpful at every turn. The restaurant was good value and reasonable quality. Personally, I would not stop at this venue again,

This is my second time in São Paulo and have experienced a very similar stay 6 months ago. It seems some of these issues are inherent at this level of hotel. Next time I will try the big chains and see if there is a material difference.

About 4 minutes walk from Av Paulista, the hotel is well-sited. Rooms are like small apartments, with separate bedroom, sitting area and bathroom. Rooms are comfortable and clean and, from that respect, the hotel represents good value. The same is not true for the breakfast, which is served in a cramped adjunct to the lobby. Guests with suitcases struggle through to a lift and tables are very cheek-by-jowl. Breakfast itself is a buffet, but there is not a huge variety. Astonishingly for Brazil, the coffee was awful - instant and out of a machine. It was disgusting. There is an outside pool and a tiny gym, buried deep in the bowels of the hotel. I had arrived really early (c.8am) but had to wait till 11 to get access. I was, however, given a late check-out, at 2pm.

If you want a great location with excellent service, plan on staying at this hotel. The Intercity The Universe Paulista is a mid-range priced hotel conveniently situated about three blocks from the MASP and Paulista Avenue. Depending on your needs, you can access the city by nearby subway or by taxi. Just be aware that Sao Paulo is a monster and requires some advanced planning to get around. Both Renato and Luciano at the front desk speak excellent English. In a town where it's hard to find English speakers, this is a real advantage for non-Portuguese speaking visitors.

The breakfast is very good with plenty of selection including, breads, fruits, meat, cheese, cereal, eggs, coffee and teas. I especially enjoyed the chicken and vegetable stew-like regional specialty put out at the breakfast buffet. Seating is adequate and service good.

We ate dinner at the restaurant two times and enjoyed each meal. Although it may seem expensive, it really was very well priced for a visitor spending USD. We were able to get exactly what we wanted even though our selections were not on the menu. The waiters don't speak a lot of English, so take your smart phone loaded with a Translate App to help with menu choices. Although wine is not widely consumed for dinner in Brazil (most drink beer), the restaurant has a decent selection at a reasonable price. A bottle of wine will run you about $12USD ($R1=$3.7USD) and what you don't finish you can take back to the room. Dinner for two ran under $40USD with wine (we don't eat desert).

Rooms have a well stocked minibar with plenty of storage for personal items, a microwave, stovetop, etc. But don't plan on cooking, you won't find cutlery or cookware. If you need cutlery, just ask the restaurant if you can borrow some.

As I mentioned in the title, the rooms are a bit small. But there is a nice sized couch, two chairs and a decent bed. It's not small like the door hits the bed when you enter, but if you are used to most US style hotel rooms you might be in for a surprise.

There is a nice outdoor pool which we did not use, but was pleasant when we visited the area. Small but adequate workout room. You may not need this because the hike up to Paulista avenue is uphill.

Room tip: Ask for an upper floor away from the construction across the street.
