“Old stylish hotel at a great place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 April 2011

This old building feels like an old 5-star hotel and is well maintained. The staff is friendly and reception staff speaks English. Wifi is available free of charge and the hotel is situated near the subway-entrance (Republica).

Rooms are well maintained as well and fitted with airconditioning, bathroom with a bath and jet. Bathroom is in original, classic, style.

Building is old, elevator is quite small and slow. Also light dims a bit in combination with a strange humming-sound in the rooms when elevator starts moving. Combined with street noise and noise from airconditioning limited sleep quality.

Yet the price is good for this location in São Paulo, the staff is very friendly and the, included, breakfast is very nice. Just 2 blocks away from a lot of shops, the subway nearby and we'd recommend this hotel for anyone who wants to sleep in central São Paulo

Outdated and tired, this one at least has the benefit of once having been a first-rate facility years' ago. Like of lot of hotels named Gran in Latin America, it's well-built and has been maintained. With many hotels located on the periphery of Praca Republica, the Gran has the advantage of being situated on a quiet street with relatively little traffic noise. At $85 price is competitive. Room was good-sized, bath clean with original period decor, i.e. avocado colored fixtures. Shower big enough to accomodate a Botero-sized couple. Old TV with no English news channels and old loud air conditioner. Free wifi was good, as was breakfast. Doubt there's a modern place to stay for less than one-hundred dollars on this Praca, which makes the Gran Corona the pick by default if this is the location in Sampa where you want to be. For late checkout, they charge 50% of rate, a policy which seems to have become standard in Brazil these days. Staff was professional.

I stayed here because of a recommendation of a business colleague. At 135 reais it is quite inexpensive but the hotel being an old established hotel, it does look quite tired. The rooms are large if a little old looking. There is a work desk which I found useful, The phone system malfunctioned and I got calls from nowhere. There were no safes in the rooms but I could use the hotel safe, which I guess is more secure. There is free wifi but the signals are weak.

Breakfast selection was rather paltry with hardly any hot foods. But the service was good. The reception staff were very helpful.

It is located a block away from Republica but the particular street it is located on does seem seedier than areas around it. I was shocked when I first drove up to it in late afternoon. But during the entire area is super busy. It is very convenient for everything including my business appointments which were just 3 blocks away. The subway stop is just a block away.

The hotel is located a couple of minutes from the Republica subway station. This location is very central and convenient. The problem is that the neighborhood is pretty dangerous at night, so it's not the best feeling to walk there after dark.
Aside from this, rooms are clean and spacious, the bathroom is also big. The hotel isn't new, so amenities are pretty basic, but convenient.
High speed internet is very good.
Breakfast is included in the price and is also very good.

This hotel is located on a quiet dead end street just off Praça da República on the site of the former Hotel Ca'd'Oro where my wife, two month old baby and I were quartered when we moved to S. Paulo in May of 1964.

For those seeking an economical alternative to the fancy hotels near the Paulista or the marginal Pinheiros, Gran Corona is it. Several interesting restauarnts are within walking distance & the hotel dining room is pleasant. Sala São Paulo and the Municipal Theater are close by. So for those interested in cultural events, it is an excellent fit.

The breakfast is ample, the bathroom huge and our bed was comfortable.

If one has reason to be in São Paulo's city center, this is a good bet.
