“Pastel and sandwich heaven!”
Reviewed 20 June 2014 via mobile

Recommended by our city tour guide and not disappointed. The Municipal Market is excellent and such a variety of produce, sights and smells it should not be missed.

The pastels are delicious and our group of 6 tried some different options and all were excellent. We also tried the vast sandwich, which beat us.

The queue to this place 10 minutes after we were served is a demonstration that the locals agree with me too!

“Pastels”
Reviewed 2 May 2014

Visiting the Mercado Municipal made us hungry. Hocca Bar is serving great pastels with a friendly service. From the restaurant you have a great view over the Market.
Prepare to cue for a table, but it is worth it !

“Get prepared to be fully loaded”
Reviewed 8 February 2014

Rocca Bar is the highlight of a visit to Mercado Municipal, or simply Mercadão, as locals use to name it.
Located in the mezzanine, Rocca is a typical Brazilian bar ("Boteco"). It is well famous in the city - and beyond - not only for the quality of food, but also, and maybe for the main reason, for how huge portions are served. Everything there is well served and well filled. Sandwiches - the Mortadela one is the master chief - are none but huge. Pasteis are excessively well filled. To understand why all meals are served this way we have to go back years ago. According to the owner, workers at the Market started the day well early in the morning and many of them used to have only one meal all day long. So they asked something that could fill them up for the whole journey. Then a tradition was born.
The best time to visit it is before 11am or after 3pm otherwise expect more than an hour to have a seat. In this case, do not waste the opportunity to gaze the marvelous stained glasses that depict a distinctive part of the Sao Paulo State history: the Coffee Economic Boom of the early 20th century.
You can get there by subway (line 1 blue - Sao Bento Station) and then 10 minutes walking or any bus that ends the line at Parque Dom Pedro station. If you come by car, be advised it is quite hard to stop nearby. The Market parking lot is always full and all those around are impressively expensive.
Ah, I could not forget to mention it: try the Bolinho de Bacalhau, something like a fried roll made of Cod fish. Is it huge? Figure it out!
