“Second rebranding in a few years, without major improvements”

Former Sofitel then turned Mercure Grand now Grand Mercure. Is aiming at 5stars, however still has a long way to go -more of a good 4 star hotel. Even at rebranding event one elevator was in maintenance - it looked like blocked already for weeks, not days. Lobby impressive (from Sofitel times). Rooms are nice and spacious for SP . Housekeeping is weak. Careful since rooms can be smelly from smokers although officially non smoker hotel. Location is central, however there is the need of a car or taxi to reach any reasonable shopping or restaurant. Nothing in safe walking distance. Even to Ibirapuera Park you will need a taxi. Breakfast is good, however seems overpriced at 49 R$. A french Boulangerie as alternate option is within the hotel. If there are special offers around 150 USD its worth trying out. At full fare you can find better hotels in SP.

Room Tip: High floors are executive floors. Renovated non carpet rooms are on lower levels up to 7th floor, an...

Mercure Grand Hotel in Sao Paulo is an excellent hotel located near Parque do ibirapuera where art expositions are frequent. Hotel rooms are very confortable with classic furniture and good bed.
Breakfast is excellent with various tropical fruits and others choices. Restaurant is good in a beautifull room and fast service. Hotel is in a short distance from the domestic airport. (Congonhas); Personel is very attentious and disposable for touristic informations..

Room Tip: Room in a high floor with view to Sena Madureira street.

With this change from Sofitel to Grand Mercure, this property is offering very interesting prices. The extra will be charged on the breakfast at R$ 49,00. But in general this is a very well structured hotel, with great rooms, friendly and professional service, in a very good location.

The Mercure Parque do Ibarapeura is, by American standards, a luxury hotel (think Four Seasons). The rooms are large & very comfortable. The lobby is gorgeous and I found the staff helpful and eager to please.

Other reviewers have noted that the elevators are slow and that the internet speeds leave something to be desired. I didn't think that the elevators were all that slow, but I did note that - unlike in the USA - each bank of elevators had its own call button. Pushing one button only called the one elevator, so I can understand why some people got frustrated. The internet in all of Brazil leaves something to be desired. It's good enough for email and light browsing, but that's about it.

The hotel offers a superb breakfast in the morning and there is a tiny little bistro off of the lobby which will provide a sandwich or pastry during the day. You will be on your own for dinner as the hotel restaurant isn't open in the evening. This was problematic for me as I arrived late at the hotel and don't speak Portuguese. I wasn't particularly comfortable with the idea of wandering from the hotel at night so I grazed the well stocked mini-bar instead. Who knew that Pringles could taste so good?

I did venture about the following day and thought that the area surrounding hotel is pretty enough. I didn't have a lot of time to explore as I was flying out that evening, but the area is probably typical of Sao Paulo. The omnipresence of barbed wire is somewhat disturbing, but as everything in Brazil seems to be behind layers and layers of barbed and electrified wire, it probably isn't an indication that the neighborhood surrounding the hotel is any better or worse than most.

I had been warned earlier about Sao Paulo traffic, but was unprepared for the reality of what must be the most unbelievably congested city in the world. The international airport is only 20 some miles from the hotel, but it took the taxi about 2 hours and 40 minutes to get me there. The traffic is freaking unreal. I found it amusing for the first hour or so as armies of motorbikes darted between the cars. Apart from being in an ambulance - and there are armies of them as well - the best way to get around Sao Paulo is on a motor bike, I think. You're are screwed if you're in a car, so be sure to allow a whole lot of time to get where you need to be.

Bottom line: If I go to to Sao Paulo again, I would be happy to stay once more at this hotel.

This hotel has a lot of potential, it has a nice location close to the city airport, and has an attractive lobby and drive up appeal. The rooms are also OK, if a little dated. It just does not seem well run. Here is a list of problems we had (3 of us on a recent business trip):
The check-in process was painfully slow. When we arrived there were two agents checking in, but one of them decided it was important to walk around behind the counter shuffling papers than to welcome the new guests and check us in. By the time I was checked in we had been there for almost 25 minutes. Then one of my colleagues got stuck in one of the 3 creaky elevators and had to be extracted out of a half open elevator stuck between floors. I waited 15 minutes for an elevator to arrive. The wifi logging on process is complex and required several calls to the front desk for all 3 of us until we were finally logged onto a painfully slow internet. My colleague tried to get an iron and ironing board which never showed up, and my toilet plugged up and it took all day to get it working again. The hotel does not exchange money but happily gives you cash, adding it to your bill with a 20% charge, which they neglected to mention when they cheerfully offered this service. The bar is run very inefficiently, with long waits for service and it was impossible to get any bills because the system was having problems. We had to wait for checkout to have any concept of what we were being charged for our after dinner drinks.
The ingredients for a nice property worth frequent visits are there. It just needs someone to get the staff more passionatly focused on the details of running a world class business hotel.
