Owner description: Designed by prolific Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer as a monument to the sociocultural and political unity of Latin America, and punctuated by a large modernist statue of a bleeding hand, the Memorial da América Latina is one of the more underrated attractions in the city. The collection of pavilions and galleries houses paintings, sculptures and folk art, along with a rotating schedule of performances and events, like the annual São Paulo Latin American Cinema Festival. Don't miss the giant, whimsical relief map of Latin America underneath the glass floor.

“It's no a place to rest and take some time”

Horrible. An avenue cuts the park. Not one plant. It is proposed that way to have visitors experience de coldness of cement and the coldness of the period. I hated it.

“Interesting but arid”
Reviewed 12 November 2012

Wide open spaces and easy access. Shows and exhibitions are usually good. But something is missing. Maybe some vegetation.

“A must visit for Latin-Americans”
Reviewed 2 November 2012

An architectural project of Oscar Niemeyer, one of the most prestigious architects in Brazil, it was inaugurated in 1989.

The Memorial is huge and consists of many places. The first thing one sees is a bleeding hand (by Niemeyer himself) making reference to the blood shed in the region during many centuries of domination and oppression. An image that tries to show the world how much this continent has suffered, how brutally it was colonized. A continent that still today, at the beginning of the 21st century is fighting by its cultural identity and autonomy.

The Civic Square holds typical festivals, pop concerts, cultural workshops and various types of entertainment. There is a very interesting library in situ, full of books by Latin-American writers.
Crossing a winding pedestrian bridge, you can visit the Creativity Pavillion, Simón Bolívar Auditorium and other parts.

You can get there by metro.

Don’t miss it if you are Latin-American. If you are not, it still deserves a visit, to learn.

This man's contribution to edifices throughout Brazil is never ending.
Wandering around for a few hours is time well spent.
