Owner description: Elevated over a concrete platform used for concerts and a weekly crafts fair, the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (São Paulo Art Museum, abbreviated MASP) is itself a work of art; the building is an imposing Modernist box suspended under two bright red concrete supports. Featuring classical European names such as Gauguin, Goya and Gainsborough, the museum also holds one of the largest collections of Brazilian and other Latin American artists on the continent.

While in SAO do visit the MASP - Museo de Arte de Sao Paulo Assis Chateaubriand. The name Chateaubriand does NOT refer to an expensive meat dish but points to the founder of this great museum that is supposed to be one of the best in South America and the building itself a main symbol of modern Brazilian architecture. While the architecture did not impress me so much - there are no stairs you can walk down to the basement (maybe I did not find them??) - I loved the exhibitions. One is called "Passagens por Paris" and shows works from Manet, Degas, Cezanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Matisse, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, Modigliano, etc. etc. All of these artists have lived at one time in their lives in Paris and the exhibition shows the influence that Paris had on them, resp. their paintings. The other two exhibitions are equally interesting. Last but not least: The entrance for people over 60 is free.....

Indeed this museum does not have the famous works of the many most European masters, but there are several impressive paintings to see. Mostly early works from later famous artists, makes MASP worth to visit. Also the building is interesting of architecture, unfortunately not so well maintained. On Tuesday free entrence, so nothing lost to visit this art museum.

MASP (for some reason called MACC by Tripadvisor) comprises a superb collection of art from Europe, the US and Latin America that would not be out of place in Paris or London. Definitely worth a visit.

Very good collection of European masters like Renior, Mattisse,Van Gough and Picasso. Most were of their early periods which I had not seen pictures.

Unless you haven't been to big museums in Europe and in the States, maybe you might like the MASP. Coming from Europe and a big fan of museum, I found this one ridiculously small! I could have done the visit within 45 min, and that by taking all my time ! I definitely think it is NOT a must to visit in Sao Paulo.
