It was founded in 1905 by the State Government of São Paulo and it is the oldest art museum in the city. It is installed in the old building of the Arts and Crafts College, designed in the late nineteenth century by the architect Ramos de Azevedo. In the 1990's it underwent an extensive renovation with the architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha's project. Pinacoteca hosts about thirty exhibitions and receives about 450,000 visitors yearly. “Awesome”

A very interesting and disquieting museum, with permanents and itinerant expositions. The building is very beautiful and located infront of the Luz station. Recomended for who want see a modern and classic museum in the same one!

“Old, modern and new”
Reviewed 15 April 2014

Big building, various rooms, some old paintings, some modern art and some works from new artists. All together I only liked 3 things. The art from the new artists could as well being made by toddlers, reflecting the artless world we live in, with an absolute lack of inspiration and values.
Not my favorite place. Right by the metro station, not a safe area.

“Interesting collection, beautiful building”
Reviewed 15 April 2014

The museum is housed in a tastefully and cleverly modernised classical building and contains an excellent collection of Latin American art - more interesting than just another mediocre collection of European or North American art because this is stuff you don't ordinarily find anywhere else, and the quality is impressive.
