Owner description: Housed in a stunning example of eclectic industrial architecture, the Mercado Municipal de São Paulo — nicknamed the Mercadão — has thousands of food items on offer, literally from soup to nuts. Lush tropical and temperate fruits from every season, choice cuts of meats and fish, and hearty prepared foods, such as the renowned and enormous mortadella (bologna) sandwich, complete the market's catalog of wares, all for sale in a boisterous, welcoming atmosphere. The surrounding area can be a bit sketchy, but the sights and flavors more than make up for the journey downtown.

“It is worthwhile!!”

Colors, flavours and food that brings you the most pleasant experiences you have ever had. Yes, I am a truly fan of Mercado Municipal de Sao Paulo. You know that kind of places you find all types of fruits, vegetables and spicy that one chef ever dreamed? That's it. Be patient with the sellers because as you walk down the aisles they will offer you cuts of many sorts of fruit, if you do not feel like trying it, just say no thanks. I recommend that you also pay attention to the vitrals from the the 30's and taste the fabulous deep-fried codfish croquette and a thin pastry envelope filled with codfish at Hoca's Bar.

“Good (not spectacular) food: it is greasy and tasty at the same time. Beware of pick pockets in the nearby streets.”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

It is a nice place to visit if you want to see a farmer's market-like place. There are many spice vendors, butchers, fishmongers, cheese vendors, vegetables and exotic fruits in an old architecture building. There is a mezzanine where you can enjoy a nice bologna ("mortadella") sandwich, or a cod fried pastry ("pastel de bacalhau") and a cold draft beer or a juice. Only be carefull to arrive there: parking may be quite
difficult and public transport (by bus or subway - choose wisely!) can be a little stressful because the downtown area is frequently inhabited by drug addicts and thugs.
Please consult or visit with a local friend to avoid headaches...

“Great, but don't buy fruit! ”
Reviewed 2 August 2014 via mobile

We made two trips to the market and really enjoyed it. The great variety of stalls and restaurants with some huge and delicious food, try the Mortadella!!
But one word of warning with the fruit sellers, you can get some free samples which is fine, but don't buy any fruit, it's insanely expensive and you can go stores anywhere else and get the same stuff for a fraction of the price.

“Full of life”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

If you wish to combine your sightseeing with some local eating, then it is to Mercado Municipal you should head. It was a bit tricky for me to find the way from the closest metro station, but the neighborhood is an experience as well. The Mercado was full of deliciousness and I enjoyed a nice and hot pastel when visiting.

“Great marketplace!!”
Reviewed 24 July 2014

If you like gourmet, higher quality food products, this is the place for you. The produce sold here is high quality, especially. The coffee is also good and it was just overall a fun place. The marketplace is nice and clean and colorful. If you're a foodie and just like browsing markets, this is a great place--for locals and travelers.
