Owner description: Housed in a stunning example of eclectic industrial architecture, the Mercado Municipal de São Paulo — nicknamed the Mercadão — has thousands of food items on offer, literally from soup to nuts. Lush tropical and temperate fruits from every season, choice cuts of meats and fish, and hearty prepared foods, such as the renowned and enormous mortadella (bologna) sandwich, complete the market's catalog of wares, all for sale in a boisterous, welcoming atmosphere. The surrounding area can be a bit sketchy, but the sights and flavors more than make up for the journey downtown.

Excellent place to have an awesome sandwich and beer in a festive market where the fresh fruits, vegetables and meats are more than outstanding. everything from a whole suckling pig to ordinary and extraordinary vegetables are there. On a Saturday, the whole area from the Mercado (market) to the Cathedral is filled with happy shoppers, gawkers, skateboarders and families.

Mercado Municipal is a great place to spend a few hours. It is principally a market for perishable goods. There are stands for meat, fish, bread, fruits, etc. The shear variety of goods in this market makes it worth the visit. Fruits and vegetables come in from all over the amazon, distinct parts of Brazil and abroad. Highly interesting to just walk around and look at.

While you're there, make sure to stop and get a sandwich and a beer.

My wife and I are real food lovers and before our trip to Sao Paulo we watched The Layover presented by Anthony Bourdain and he suggested visiting here and trying the Mortadella Sandwich, and it would be no exaggeration to say that this sandwich was the second best thing I've ever had in my mouth! It was absolutely delicious!

We've been to the world famous food market in Toronto, Canada and the food there was fantastic but here it was even better.

If you like food on any kind of level, you will not regret coming here and trying the famous sandwich!

Beautiful old food market, it's the most famous food market of Sao Paulo. There you can see incredibly big and stunning fruits, meats, fish, sweets and all sorts. Perfect for a visit for lunch as their sandwiches are enormous and delicious. It's usually very busy at lunch time, but if you go a bit earlier or a bit later you manage to avoid the queues and long wait. There's also a little souvenir shop in there. It's definitely a worth a visit.

Colors, flavours and food that brings you the most pleasant experiences you have ever had. Yes, I am a truly fan of Mercado Municipal de Sao Paulo. You know that kind of places you find all types of fruits, vegetables and spicy that one chef ever dreamed? That's it. Be patient with the sellers because as you walk down the aisles they will offer you cuts of many sorts of fruit, if you do not feel like trying it, just say no thanks. I recommend that you also pay attention to the vitrals from the the 30's and taste the fabulous deep-fried codfish croquette and a thin pastry envelope filled with codfish at Hoca's Bar.
