“If you like drug addicts and porn shops and being mugged this is the place,”
Reviewed 2 November 2013

It is not the hotel which is terrible but the area. On the first night a armed police officer got mugged right outside the hotel. It was a pain that the lifts kept breaking down. At least i got fit using the stairs. The area is full at night of drug addicts and the hotel has two sex cinemas on each side of it. To get to the hotel to have to go pass people trying to sell you hard core gay sex magazines. The park opposite has a more than 20 people sleeping rough with people sleeping also sleeping on the sidewalk. The bank stand sleeps about 5-8 people. The smell of raw sewage coming from the homeless people nearly knocks you out. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful but did not speak much English. You do feel safe one in in he hotel as they have lots of staff on the entrance to look after you. My room was fine a but tired but it was large and clean and a comfortable bed. The air con had only one setting on or off. My colleague had a standard room which was not nice. It was small and you could not open the window as it had a metal shutter on not sure why?The staff warned us how dangerous the area could be and not to wear rings, expensive items, carry lap tops etc It is 100% DANGEROUS to go out side late at night. During the day the area is very busy so it is safe to go out but there is still lots of street crime. There are groups of police officers in groups of 4 every where during the day but at night you are on your own. The food was excellent at breakfast. On Sunday there was a street market opposite in the square which was great with some fantastic local art and pictures on display and food stands with great tasting freshly made food. The lifts kept breaking down and being in a lift full of people with the lights going out was not fun. We were booked for whole week but could only stick it for three days and moved hotel to a nicer area even though we had prepaid for the room. If you want to stay here just be very careful.

I booked through decolar. When I got to the hotel and asked for a discount as I was only staying until 10.00pm on my last night, I was told that they couldn't do anything as I had paid by credit card and decolar had already charged it. Should have gone straight thrugh the hotel!

I chose this hotel because it was close to Praca de Republica and 25 Marco. It's not the only hotel which is close to these places - my decision was based on the fact they had a gym in the hotel. Disappointed to find the gym was "being renovated" but I could use the gym at the hotel across the street. Maracapa gym was a sad representation of a gym, being a small room with a couple of aerobic machines, a sad looking all-in-one circuit weight machine and a few free weights.

There was only one Engish-speaking staff member, so best to know a little Portuguese.

Reception staff were polite and helpful, but not overly friendly. Porters were approachable.

Although the room was fairly clean, I did have to ask to have it swept as the hair on the floor was definitely not mine. The bath room was pokey - shower in the bath tub. Towels clean and changed daily. Bed was comfortable and linen clean. Cable television with English channels. Room safe convenient. Thirteenth floor and no noise from street level- overall very quiet. Bar fridge, with very pricey beverages ($R5 for a coke or bottle of water), which you could use and replace by buying from the convenience store on the corner of the block (for $R1.50-$R2.00). Air conditioner worked well, and the window could be opened if needed.

Breakfast was ample - lots of cakes, pastries, breads; selection of cereals; fairly large selection of fruit; yoghurt; tea, coffee, juices; scrambled egg, sausage; cheeses and cold meats.

Walk outside onto a street typical of any big city - lots of buses and cars, and homeless people. Leave them alone and they don't bother you. I walked around at night and didn't feel in any danger. Several reasonably priced restaurants and snack bars close by,including McDonalds right next door.

Taxi from the airport is $R96, and takes about 20 minutes off peak hour. Airport shuttle bus terminal is one block away, costs about $R36, runs every half hour or so and takes about half an hour as it is direct. If you have heavy suitcases, use a taxi to take you round the block, but catch it on the other side of the road, because right outside the hotel the road runs on the wrong side of the praca and you have to go a few blocks in order to get to the bus terminal.

Metro stop is at the praca, a block and 5 minutes walk away. $R3 for a ticket - the metro is very efficient. Didn't catch a local bus but there are lots passing outside the hotel. Caught a taxi, but make sure you catch one going in the same direction you want to end up, because the one ways are tricky, and you can end up going in circles before heading in the direction you want.

On Sundays, there is a market/fair at the Praca. Very peaceful place to spend the afternoon. Vendors with a wide selection of wares, although a bit overpriced, food fair, with tasty, also over-priced treats. Crowd is diverse, ranging from elderly folk to families, to young couples, both heterosexual and gay, homeless, drunks, and lots of security to keep all in check.
