The term "lanchonete" in São Paulo refers to much more than only a snack bar or alike. One finds snacks of all sorts, beverages of all kinds, fresh juices, chocolates and gums, greasy sandwiches and meals.
Those means tend to be simple and good, enough to fill your stomach for the rest of the day or until you are back home. They often consist of one kind of meat with sides, which are often plain rice, beans and a basic salad.
Those places are loud, service is slow, but the food is cheap and good. If willing to save money and have something in your stomach, no fear, get to one of those places!
