Hotel was very good. We stayed b+b which was ideal because it gave us freedom to eat out in great local restaurants. The breakfast was good but AI meals looked poor compared to what you can get locally. Overall a really good base for exploring this part of black sea coast!

We got back from our week stay at the Sol Marina Palace on Saturday. Our first time to Nessebar - and Bulgaria.

We arrived there late Saturday night and we were greeted by a very friendly guy on reception who spoke very good English, and after checking us in a porter was called and he took our cases to our room and we were given a quick demo on how the wrist(watch)bands operated our door and how to use the aircon.

First thing I did after he left was rush over to the balcony door to see what our awesome sea view would be...........a big let down. The official pictures of the hotel looked amazing and whilst the sea part of our view was lovely, we feel the official photographs were quite misleading - the beautiful looking lawned area on the side of the building was actually an overgrown wasteland of what looks like a demolished building or could even be an archeological dig site fenced off with corrugated steel that's covered in graffiti, with over grown trees and bushes blocking out most of our view of the beautiful Old town Nessebar from our second floor balcony. This ISN'T the hotels fault what is next door to them but the pictures advertising the hotel ARE. It also gives you the impression the beach is right next to the hotel across the street - which it IS but you have to go mountaineering to get down to it. I've attached a photo to compare.

The hotel really does look and feel like a cruise ship, but that for us altho it's what attracted both of us to the hotel in the first place was kind of what let it down at the same time for us, you could have been at a Holiday Inn in any UK City. There was nothing authentic or traditional in the decor to make you feel like you were abroad. It felt generic and quite sterile, it resembles a ship but it felt characterless and I know that sounds like a total contradiction.

The housekeeping team were very good, beautiful fresh bright white fluffy towels replaced daily, I think the bed linen was changed twice or three times in our 7 days stay. The mattresses were the best we've ever slept on in a hotel and although twin beds pushed together it was the best and most comfortable nights sleep we've ever had in a hotel. I think a nice touch would have been a kettle and tea and coffee making facilities in the room, I know there's drinks available in the hotel but we like to wake up and get ready for the day with a cuppa - luckily we'd read previous reviews and took our own kettle with us – and a four plug trailing socket as there was only one plug socket in the whole room – apart from a socket by the mirror which said was only for mobile phones only. The rooms were nice, spacious with bright décor but they could have done with a few extra draws or deeper draws in the bedside tables but otherwise plenty of hanging up space in the wardrobe with ample hangers for both of us and a pull out shoe draw underneath. Rooms were very nice.

Where the hotel failed absolutely miserably for us was the food and it really did get us down. It is without doubt the worst we have ever encountered in a hotel EVER - and between us we've been to many hotels of varying stars in numerous countries – some third world, so this review is not us being picky by any means. We gave up on eating at the hotel after the third day choosing instead to pay to eat out. Once eating elsewhere we couldn't believe the luke warm/cold muck that was being served up to us when food was so cheap and of such good quality in the restaurants in Old town Nessebar – 32 lev working out at £12 for 1 large and 1 small beer each, a chicken dish and a mixed grill that tasted fantastic. We got this from The MexicanO – go to the left hand side of the old town entrance past the big blue port car parking barrier and gates and slightly up the hill, you'll pass the MexicanA first to get to the MexicanO, it looks like a shed inside but the food was amazing on both occasions we ate there and the best we found overall.

After eating out and seeing for ourselves what beautiful food Bulgaria has to offer we felt robbed being an All Inclusive guest and actually offended that this was the diabolical food being offered to us by SMP.

We had to fill up on chips (if we timed it right and they were hot) and bread when we ate in the hotel just to stop from going hungry, because the very little variety of hot food (8 serving trays under heating lamps only replenished when empty and cold) on offer really was that bad - and neither of us are picky eaters.

The waiting staff as has already been said in previous reviews were very attentive and none intrusive. But I felt there was little if any cleaning of tables other than a dust pan and brush sweeping off the previous guests remains. Dinner service tables were brushed over and laid up ready for breakfast without being stripped and cleaned down – I never saw a cloth or cleaning spray used at all to clean the tables. I couldn't believe the restaurant manager actually used a previous guests USED serviette to wipe away food and drink spillages off the tables as she went around, and called the waiting staff to relay the tables for the next guests. EVERY buffet style restaurant we've been to has had alcohol gel dispensers on entry to the restaurant but this wasn't the case at the SMP. I know this may sound like I’m being picky but cleanliness in eating areas should be paramount.

AI drinks – very limited, as others have already mentioned. We stuck to the beer and hot drinks. The dark dingy bar only for AI guests wasn't welcoming at all but the bar staff were very polite and friendly – until 11pm when the lights are turned off to signal that the bar is now closed. No flash of the lights or a word from the bar staff that it's last orders just lights out and basically get out in the pitch black darkness. One good thing was the ice cream in there – it was beautiful. The self service drink station on the pool deck was a joke, the coffee looked like mud and tasted like orange juice was mixed in it - revolting. No milk or coffee whitener was available either, the only decent thing on offer was the beer. We didn't use the Sky bar as we refuse to pay for drinks when we've already paid for our drinks in advance by going AI. Same as the Sport bar on the front of the hotel.

We felt like we were being penalised for being an all inclusive guest, as if they'd given it to us as a free upgrade so gave us the cheapest stuff they could. I know all hotels that offer AI give you local spirits and beers but this really was of very low quality. AI is paying in advance for you food and drink not being a freeloader.

We loved Nessebar and the location and close proximity of Old town Nessebar and if we came back to Nessebar again would we stay at SMP again? Bed and breakfast or room only then probably yes but the AI isn't worth it unless you only intend on drinking.

I've rated the hotel 4 stars because I can't give it 3.5 and the hotel could never be deemed average by giving it 3 stars. But if I was to rate the hotel on the food alone it would be a big fat ZERO, it really was THAT dreadful.

***If you're due to visit soon, I would pack a 4 plug trailing socket, a kettle if you want a cuppa in your room, a hairdryer IS provided but I'd take your own as it's not very easy to manoeuvre for styling. And take extra spending money so you can eat out and sample some beautiful traditional Bulgarian dishes in the fabulous restaurants a lovely 10 minute walk away over in Old town Nessebar***

We have just got back from our second holiday at the Sol Marina Palace and as before it was brilliant. The hotel was fairly quiet as the season in Bulgaria was winding down so this meant it wasn't crowded. We stayed on the fourth floor with a lovely view towards Old Nessebar, possibly the best view to wake up to. The room was cleaned on a daily basis to a good standard, thank you to all the cleaning staff. Only gripe is: why is the loo roll better in the public areas than the bedrooms?. Air con in the room was working better than our last visit.
Food is always a contentious issue in Bulgaria as it is deemed rude to serve it piping hot but most days everything was decent enough without being top end. The dining room staff in the main were amiable but the manager should learn to smile and say hello to the guests, it goes a long way! Blonde Ilyanna, Lily & Tedi were always courteous and smiling.
The Marina Bar was again very under-used, this was seen previously and could be because it is not a very inviting place. A bit of a tidy up and some better furniture would go a long way in improving it, as would wi-fi. A few additional drinks would be a bonus as not everyone likes Gin, Vodka, or Brandy so some Schnapps or similar would be a help. Stoil was always friendly enough behind the bar. The Sky Bar as before was a lovely airy place for a drink even though it is not part of the all inclusive package, at least it had a better selection of drinks.
The roof-top pool was a bit cold but very nice once in. The views are spectacular with sea views on three sides and plenty of sun loungers around the pool and on the sun terrace.
We have enjoyed two fantastic holidays here and would recommend it.

Room Tip: Fourth floor and roof top rooms have the best views.

First trip to Bulgaria, loved this hotel and Nessebar. We were celebrating our anniversary and had a poem and chocolates left in the room for us, nice touch. I wont repeat what the other reviewers have said, go for yourself, you wont be disappointed. We will defiantly return. Well done all staff who work hard from morning to late at night.
