We spent one night in town and then headed out here for two nights. On the first day we took a day trip by boat from town and they then dropped us at the hotel as it's in the middle of the lake. The boat man then picked us up the next day for a second trip. 2 nights is enough. After 5 there's nothing else to do but have a sunset drink, eat and sleep. Food at hotel is good and staff are friendly.

The hotel is partly on stilts in the middle of the lake at the entrance to one of the main channels south west toward Inthein. The hotel backs onto floating gardens and is well located to explore Inle Lake. We had a room at the back of the section of separate bungalows facing the gardens and we thought this was better than those at the front with river views, which were very noisy. Traffic stopped after sunset so the lake became tranquil until sun up. The resort is a bit dated in parts but this is made up by the great staff and location. Our timber panelled room was very tasteful and comfortable. We did several boat tours to see the sights and one morning went to the Kaung Daing hot spa for a refreshing float around - expensive but in Myanmar thankful it is there!

Room Tip: There are two types of rooms with obviously different prices. The bungalows are more private and atm...

We stayed in January 2014 for 2 nights. Staff, service and rooms excellent and it's on the lake itself which is a great position. Sure. it's a bit noisy with motor boats but who cares? You're in the middle of a working lake!
The food in the restaurant is DELICIOUS, I recommend the spring rolls especially.
Difficult to fault.

Room Tip: Book a detached chalet, other rooms are joined and have thin walls.

Pros:
- good location in the middle of the lake, close to many destinations in the south of the lake
- friendly staff who were helpful and happy to arrange boats and other excursions for you, especially the main manager lady (however, other staff were a bit incompetent at times, with the language barrier the main issue I think)
- decent food in the restaurant and reasonable prices (especially given you have no other option for dinner)

Cons:
- the hotel overall felt very dated
- bathrooms were very small
- would not recommend the spa treatments (these are done in room, and the massage was very average, especially for the price)
- breakfast buffet would have been good, if only the food was warm (bain maries were always cold for some reason)

Paramount Inle Resort, Inle Lake

Heho Airport is the closest by air to Inle Lake and several airlines fly to this airport from Yangon.

It is a further 45 minutes by car East along National Highway 4 to Sauingyong, then south to a boat jetty at Nyaungshwe where a fast boat takes another 45 minutes on picturesque Inle Lake to the Paramount Inle Resort located halfway South on the lake near the West shore.

One can arrange the car and boat oneself or as we did get the hotel to do arrange transfers for you at around 50 USD each way per transfer. If you arrive early in the morning you could hire the boat for the day and include the transfers and save some money. There are interesting sights of village life along the way. On the way some fishermen on the lake stage a demonstration of their unique style of fishing, balancing on one leg on the boat whilst rowing with the other and using their hands to cast or draw nets!

The welcome drink at reception, luggage delivery and checkin is efficient and we managed to get early Checkin as a room was available. We had booked a cottage room on stilts overlooking the lake and although more expensive, the wooden cottage with it's own West facing balcony view is charming especially at sunset. We also had requested an extra bed for our son who also brought his girlfriend at the last minute for a reasonable additional cost. The resort seems to be the only one with an observation tower that has gorgeous 360 degree views again great at sunrise and especially sunset. The resort does not have a swimming pool and swimming in the lake is not advisable. There is a spa service with a range of massages but these are provided in the guests' rooms. There is only one masseuse so booking early is advisable.

The little cottage rooms are nice and made of wood, standing on stilts on the lake and accessed by decking that runs the length and breadth of the hotel. There is a little garden and birds come early in the morning. The cottage rooms open out on to a balcony with deck chairs that looks out onto the lake. It is relaxing to sit and watch the boats putt putt up and down with various cargo. Other reviewers have complained about the boat noise but to us this was not a problem and adds to the character of the place.

The beds are comfy, have mosquito nets, sheets and towels are clean and crisp. Tea making and hair drying facilities are provided and the plugs support UK style plugs for charging phones and camera batteries. As the winter nights are quite chilly, the staff even distribute hot water bottles to warm up the beds and keep feet warm!

As the resort is far from any restaurant it is best to eat dinner at the hotel. The selection of dishes is quite good at around 5 USD for a main dish and local wines, such as Red Mountain or Aythaya are available in both 35 cl and 70 cl bottles. The ambience of the dining room is nice with flowers on table linen and nice views from the windows. Lunch may be served on the outside wooden deck but dining outside is not advisable in the evening due to the mosquitos. The dishes are tasty and we chose fish dishes primarily. The soups are exceptionally good, either served in small or main dish portions.

Min Min is the very charming head waitress who speaks Burmese, English, Spanish, Italian and a smattering of other languages which is really amazing as she has learned all of these from her interactions with visiting tourists. One advice she gave is to choose dishes for dinner at around lunchtime because most guests arrive together and this can lead to a delay in the kitchen. The dishes can be made as mild or spicy by the chef according to guests taste. Breakfast is from 6 to 9 am and is buffet style with an egg station making omelettes and pancakes to request.

All the staff are so accommodating and will try to meet any reasonable request to please guests. Mrs Kim Bo is the head of staff there and is very friendly (as her name suggests in Burmese). She is knowledgeable of all the places to visit on the lake and can suggest tailored tours based on guests interests. She has a list of interesting sight seeing options, knows local rates and can negotiate and arrange the tours.

Tours are available to all the workshops around the lake making a variety of handicrafts. We got Mr Clean (that is the translation of his Burmese name) who is very cool in his designer sun shades and hat as well as being an expert speed boat driver to take us around.

We saw workshops making silver jewellery, hand made paper, paper umbrellas, weaving from cotton, silk and lotus fibre, blacksmiths making bells, cheroot and cigars. The long-necked Kayan ladies that weave were beautiful and it was ice to chat to the younger ones who knew a bit of English. We also went through villages built on stilts on the water with pagodas, more charming than Venice. The water hyacinths are prolific and form floating rafts and the villagers use these and the little watery ground there is to cultivate gardens producing tomatoes, flowers and other vegetables.

The visit to the market that pops up at different villages around the lake is delightful and one can spend hours going around and haggling good naturedly with the local shop keepers who try very hard to speak whatever language the tourists want to communicate in. There is no pressure to buy anything at the workshops or the market and all the locals are very pleasant. It is nice to come away with a whole lot of nice souvenirs by directly supporting all the hard working locals who are mostly women earning for their families.

We had enough of pagodas at Bagan so we skipped visits to the Pagodas but one can include stops at these if one wanted.

Although recycling is evident from the number of boats that carry away stuff to be recycled, there were some villages that had rubbish tips and the authorities need to ensure that this lovely place is not spoiled by such practices.

Very nice rooms, very clean bathrooms. We had a room by the river. Very relaxing with a nice balcony. Comfortable beds and clean sheets. Hot water any time you open the faucet. Clean shower and towels. Courteous staff. Good food in the restaurant. Nice sunset views from the observation tower in the middle of the property. Nice place to travel around Inle lake. Would love to stay here again? If you are a light sleeper, the boats may wake you up early in the morning, but we loved it. Get up early and feed the seagulls!!

Room Tip: Get one next to the river

This was a great place to stay on the lake since it is relatively close to the mainland, however still 40 minutes by boat away. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Rooms were very clean and quiet. Food was good and lots of options. Wifi was pretty good considering your location. Amazing views and a great place to sit on the front deck watching the locals go about life as they pass by in their boats carrying various objects.
