“Decent accommodation, poor value”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 December 2013

I booked a night here through Agoda only because it was the only space available on Christmas Day and because I was required to have an advance hotel reservation at the end of my Kalaw-to-Inle lake trek. I paid $42 for a double room and feel that for this price, I should have been offered a lot more. My bathroom had the typical setup of shower-in-the-same-space-as-the-toilet which wasn't ideal. Wifi was weak but existent. No one offered me any information on the area and I had to go back and ask a second person for a map and wifi password. The hotel is located on the far end of town - about a 20-30 minute walk from the boat jetty (or 1500 kiat for a bike taxi). Breakfast is standard - eggs, fruit, crepe, toast, coffee/tea.

On the plus side, it's quiet during sleeping hours, there is hot water, the rooms are clean, beds comfortable. The stay was fine, just not as welcoming as other places in the area are. I moved after one night to a wonderful B&B across town for half the price.

We stayed for two nights at the Hotel Manaw Thu Kha in the Lake Inle region of Myanmar. It was not one of the high priced posh new lakeside resorts. It’s more like a 15 unit motel built in appealing red brick. From the outside, it seemed like a quality establishment. We were not pleased with our stay and think that guests could do much better even in the same price range.

When we arrived there was a construction crew doing some concrete finish work on a recently built addition. So there was a bit of noise. As we settled in, we noticed there was no electric power. It came back on after an hour. And it went out again each night. When there was hot water it was hot enough to cause a burn to skin. But the time a second guest took a shower it was just lukewarm. Our second night all water to the room stopped at 8:30. Maintenance was only able to restore the hot water so come morning we had only hot water, which due to extreme temperature caused problem shaving and washing. Worse was the inability to flush the toilet. Things might have been easier if we had been given some bottled water. There is wifi internet at the hotel, however the signal doesn’t reach the rooms. And the staff had a habit of turning it on and off now and again. When we were able to use the internet it was as slow as any other place in Myanmar.

Apart from a very low level of lighting from stark CFL lights and all dark wood finish, our room was pleasant. It was air conditioned [when the power was on]. We had 3 beds – large twins or small doubles. The room had a centrally located desk/table and an old style TV. There was even a minibar. The room was large [maybe 16 ft by 16 ft] and clean. The bathroom was also large and had a separate tub+shower so water did not go everywhere . The sink was in a vanity. But the bathroom was in need of some simple maintenance. Besides the water problems noted above, the gasket round the faucet was broken and sticking out, the shower holder was loose, the toilet seat as coming off, and the bathtub seal needed to be cleaned and re-caulked. It’s interesting how a property can build a whole new addition while neglecting the maintenance on existing rooms.

Breakfast was included with our stay. It was setup outdoors [not sure what they would do if rained] and consisted of some juice, cooked to order eggs, and some warm, not browned, imitation toast. It must have been the egg chef’s first day on the job as they seemed unfamiliar with various styles and quite struggled with the preparation.

A few closing random notes: On the plus side, the Hotel Manaw Thu Kha is close to town. On the negative side the nice outdoor benches and courtyard were either wet from recent rain or dirty from construction dust. Guests had best hope for fair weather because when it rains on the tin roofs the noise inside is louder than a normal conversation. Guests are advised to make sure the hotel staff collects all bags you may have placed outside your room. They left one of ours.

Fortunately we were able to laugh at all the preceding incidents and issues. None caused us any real problem. If you value the potential of this kind of entertainment then the Hotel Manaw Thu Kha may be the place for you. Or, you can try one of the other nearby properties and see if the story is any better.

I really am sorry to give this hotel such a poor rating because the staff were really friendly especially the gentlemen who is the owner but we felt like we had ended up in faulty towers. First of all the hotel is adding more rooms so the whole place is a building site, they told us that after 5pm it would be quiet but on one evening they were still drilling long into the night. the television doesn't work, which doesn't bother us but if it's there it should be working, the chairs in the room were broken and on the 2nd day we complained at 2pm that the room hadn't been cleaned and they said they would see to it but when we returned at 5pm it still hadn't been cleaned. On the last night they had a big group of French people who needed a wake up call at 4.30 am so obviously we also got the wake up call and then again at 5am they didn't bother checking which rooms needed the call they just banged on all the doors. Breakfast was very basic with a couple of slices of toast bread but without it being toasted and butter and jam and some fruit, although one morning we were offered a crepe which came thicker than an omelette but the girl was so nice that cooked it that we ate it anyway.
The positive about this hotel is definitely the staff as even if they don't speak much English they really do try their best it's just that they don't have any training so don't know how to solve problems. There are much better options in Nyaung Schwe with a lot of new hotels being built so wouldn't stay here again if we return.

A very pleasant hotel in Nyaung Shwe. Of particular note, was the helpfulness of the lady owner (who speaks perfect english and french). The rooms were beautiful individual wooden chalets with good facilities (minibar, TV) and a large bathroom with bath tub (a rarity in Myanmar!). The only drawback here was that the boilers ran out of hot water very fast, however they are in the process of renovating the water heating system, so there should be no problem soon. A good breakfast was included in the price. Very family friendly too. Like all hotels in Myanmar, particularly near Inle lake, it was overpriced at 50$ per night.

We stayed here for 4 nights. It was quiet and clean and had hot water most of the time. We are experienced travelers and don't expect a whole lot. It was expensive ($50), but everything in Myanmar was way more expensive than when we were there in 2006. For what we paid, we were happy and the staff tried hard to please. It was a nice refuge in Nyaungshwe.

The owner was unfriendly and the rooms are overprized. We were promised hot water for two days before we finally had hot water, without any offer of a discount and when we asked for a discount (the double room cost 50 UD $ per night) the owner got very unfriendly and threatened to call the police.
Outside the hotel they promise free bikes, which was also not true; bikes cost 1000 Kyat per day.
We cannot recommend this hotel.

Stayed 4 nights and was glad to leave.Location is easy off the main street.Room was clean and well equipped , tv , hot water etc but lacked charm. It was cold we had to wear pullovers in bed, also walls very thin you can hear the neighbours. Staff seem to bumble along in a nonchalent and incomptent manner, but have no problem in asking for money in adavnce for everything. Breakfast was non descript, we gave up after the second night
