“Higher potential with some effort”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 December 2013

So much potential to be a slam-dunk 5, but wasted by a lack of attention to detail. Beautiful location and very friendly staff. Very nice restaurant and above average breakfast. The cottages over the water are unique and very lovely. But a few issues drop the rating. The A/C struggles to cool the room. Our front room lights were so dim that the desk area was all but unusuable. It appears that a dimmmer switch was mal-functioning because the bedroom lights were fine. The lights were not fixed during our stay after notification. The beautiful bathroom had a large shower head with little water preasure and very inconsistant temperature control. The ViewPoint Lodge is a lovely place to stay, just be willing to live with the issues.

The bungalows (we had the larger type) are very nice: set on stilts, with nice wooden floor and enough space. There is a little TV-room with a large flat-screen, a sofa and a table/chair, and a 'bedroom' (half-open) with mosquito net, and a balcony. Bathroom a bit small but adequate. Nice cosmetics too. The only drawback was a bed smell from the bathroom during the first 2 days of our stay. The 3rd day it miraculously disappeared. The bathroom is nicely designed (really liked the bamboo-'shelves' for towels), but the bamboo tap can (and was already a little, which didn't improve the smell) get mouldy with time. The bathroom window doesn't open, so there is humidity that ligners inside.
The area is quiet at night, at least between 9.00 pm and 6.00 am. Our bungalow was not overlooking the main canal where most (very noisy) boats are passing, but a bit of water and a dirt road (with noisy tractors passing, but not too much before 6.00 am).
Breakfast was included. There is no buffet. The items arrive on a long wooden 'boat', pretty. Unfortunately, only the third day we discovered that we can order eggs. Nobody told us that the first two days. Further to it, there are some fresh fruits (or a fruit salad), a glass of fruit juice and a mini-glass of other juice, a mini-glass of yoghurt (tasty), a few slices of ham and cheese (really a few!), two deep-fried shan potato dumplings (1 per person), jems in pots (the usual Europe-made hotel jam pots, probably very hygienic but nothing special), and a bread basket.
Dinner: we decided to celebrate our last night in Burma with a dinner in style in the hotel restaurant - easily the nicest setting in Nyaungshwe. Unfortunately, it was a mistake. Both the shan-discovery and the vegetarian set menus were totally untasty, even for Burmese standards. No matter the price (it's a very expensive restaurant, more than any in the area). But we ate only some of the starters, the mains were really untasty. They even managed to make the chicken without any taste (did they sterilize it??? :-)). A big disappointment. We left almost all.
When the Swiss girl working at the hotel arrived and asked about the food, we frankly told her what we thought, and that we returned the food, but the only thing she did was proposing us an expresso. We thanked an refused because it was late and we never drink coffee at night. Unfortunately, she did not propose anything else: a limoncello? A glass of wine? A fruit juice? A tea perhaps? At paying the bill we discovered that we did not pay for the tea, which was 2000 kyat (less than 2 dollars), while the whole bill amounted to 50 dollars or so. So do not go and eat there, there are far better options to eat in Nyaungshwe.

Room Tip: Probably better to have a room not on the main canal (noise).

We visited Inle Lake in November and from the photos on the website thought we were staying on the lake in a serene, quiet lodge in an overwater bungalow. We have never stayed in a noisier place than Viewpoint Lodge which is right in the middle of the busy town at the north end of the lake. On one side of the lodge is where all the boats are docked and they have the loudest motors all day long. On the other side of the lodge is a busy street with motorcycles driving by day and night---you feel like you are next to a freeway it is so noisy. The restaurant is open air and we could not have a conversation during breakfast because of the street and boat noise.

At all other hotels we stayed in while in Myanmar we were greeted on arrival with a welcome drink and warm welcome. At this hotel there was no one to greet us and no one seemed to care that we were there. The breakfasts were very mediocre compared to the other wonderful breakfasts we had in other hotels in Myanamar.

The photos do give you the impression that this is a unique lodge on Inle Lake. The rooms are very nice and are overwater bungalows---but the lodge is not on the lake at all but on a small canal in the city. I visited Inle Princess Resort which is on Inle Lake and where I will stay on my next visit.

I could never recommend this hotel due to the terrible and noisy location of the hotel and the lack of service from the staff.

Room Tip: Go to a hotel on the lake---not in town

We thank you for your interest helping us to improve our service.

It’s a big disappointment for us not having been able to satisfy your expectations.
Each year in November the region welcomes the biggest Festival of the country hosting 2 million visitors in one week. Of course, the village and the all region are unusually busy and crowded of people during this exceptional and festive period of the year. Lots of boats and “cars” are passing around.

We can’t change anything to that, since the location of our property is in the town, in the middle of the local life. It’s most of the time an advantage.

We don’t have for policy to welcome our customers in a bad way. They’re usually offered with a drink from the drink list and can choose what they want. It might regrettably happen that something went wrong and I would like to apologize about that.

Breakfast is one of our strength, usually most of our guests do appreciate it very much, it seems that it was not your case and we can only regret it.

The pictures we show, are exactly what the hotel is. A lodge with bungalows on the water. On the lake the biggest disadvantage, is that it’s difficult to go anywhere else in the evening, but we respect your decision and wish that you will have a pleasant stay next you come in our wonderful region.

Cordially,

The Management

We were so happy with the food that we came two evenings in a row to eat there. The hotel also arranged us a reasonably priced boat trip although we were not sleeping there.

If you are looking for a true gastronomic experience with a classy set-up, this is the place to go.

Located on the western edge of town (Nyaungshwe), View Point Lodge is adjacent to the Nan Chaung Canal, which provides access to the northern end of Inle Lake. This canal becomes alive at dawn with long tail boats taking people and tourists to and from the lake. The dining room / restaurant is a perfect place to observe this spectacle. Our room was on stilts over a small lake at the rear of the main hotel building. It had a separate bedroom and lounge area. The room was not air conditioned but had a fan and mosquito net, which we did not use. The furnishings and decorations were all top quality and the bed good. I think the windows and sliding doors would benefit from being screened so that they could be left open at night without attracting insects. The inhouse restaurant was excellent serving innovative, maybe not quite traditional, Shan food. The breakfast was also good. Staff were friendly and efficient. A great place to stay.

Room Tip: If you wish to avoid the early morning noise ask for a room on the opposite side of the complex to t...

What a wonderful find. All boxes ticked! It was hard to decide where to stay when planning our trip, and so glad we chose this . I've since recommended it to friends travelling to the lake area. We were upgraded into a unit at the very end of the walkways so privacy + and so appreciated. The friendliness of everyone, the excellent food, surroundings, service, really made us feel welcome and helped us relax. Thanks so much to all the wonderful staff. PS and the nightly fire fly watching was an unexpected bonus!

Love this place! I wish to rate it 6 out of 5 stars, cos I feel it is one of the most perfect places I have stayed among all my trips. I call it luxurious, not because it has high class facilities or expensive stuff.... it simply matches everything i look for in a "nice place to stay"!

Located at the western end of the main street across Nyaung Shwe town, it is a gem tucked at the corner of the town. It is also a good base for exploring Lake Inle. The interior of the hotel (or rather, like a beach resort) feels very different from the atmosphere outside. For the price you pay (Superior Room), you can probably get a very basic room in those metro cities. It is definitely a good choice if you want to stay in better hotel during your trip in the country!

Taking an overnight bus and arriving at the hotel at 6am, we were way too early to get a room under normal circumstances. When we stepped in to the lobby (cafe area), the staff offered to serve us drinks of our choice and the boss came out to greet us and offered to serve breakfast (not sure if chargeable though). Thereafter, they told us to hang on for 20 minutes while they get us a room. To our surprise, they automatically upgraded my room to a Junior Suite!! It was really nice of them!! We could rest a little before starting our day in Nyaung Shwe.

All the rooms are over water and you can feed the ducks and fishes in the water. Rooms are wooden-structured and rather spacious. The "wooden box" in front of the sofa is actually their eco-fridge. Large ice blocks will be placed inside everyday and the drinks can stay chilled without use of electricity. Fruits are also placed on the table at the corner. Shower gel are placed in bottles and there are 3 boxes on the sink. One contains Thanaka, another contains something which you mix with water to use as shampoo. Can't recall what was in the 3rd box. There is also balcony outside for you to relax - ours oversee the large field. Too bad the mountains were too high and blocked our sunset view. Yes there is no air con like big hotels, but there is a cooling fan at corner of the room which chills the room a little. Otherwise you can choose to leave the windows slightly opened. The shy housekeeping ladies comes in the evening to pull down the mosquito net of the bed.

Breakfast was excellent for me. Served to us on a long wooden boat, there were fruits, ham, cheese, potato puffs, yogurt, fruit juice, a basket of breads with several types of jam, egg, bacon and coffee/tea. I liked it as it was simple yet filling. The atmosphere when eating there was good too. The roads was getting busy in the morning but being on second floor, you won't be affected too much. Can consider dinner there and chill out at night; quite cheap for a hotel restaurant. You can get boat tours and rent bikes from the hotel. The staff serving us at breakfast chatted with us, tell us where you can get to on bicycle (which quite alot of tourist do). Towards the west, you can cycle away from the main town and towards Khaung Daing Hot Spring. Beyond there, you can opt to cycle further south of the lake or catch a boat (carries you and your bicycle) to cross to other side of the lake. From there you can continue to cycle towards Red Mountain Estate Vineyard. Nice place to rest and taste wine; the food wasn't expensive too.

They have a very friendly dog that is always hanging around at the entrance and even walked us to the bus when we were leaving the hotel!
