“Good potential, but very disappointing.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 February 2014

We have twice stayed at the Aureum Palace in Bagan which is an exceptionally beautiful and pleasant hotel, hence our expectation was of something similar. Our first disappointment was the view, which is of piles of earth/mud in front of the bungalows. One day we even had a digger on a platform working right in front of our balcony, when we came back from a trip and wanted to relax.
Next door there is a very big hotel under construction and it makes considerable noise.
Worst of all, boats are allowed to come to the jetty at full speed and they start at 6 am, hence
avoid rooms 108 and 107. They are next to the jetty and you are woken up before daylight. Last
time we stayed at the Princess resort and there the boats have to turn off their engines well before arriving and row into the jetty, which makes for a far more peaceful environment.

The bungalows are enormous and the aircon is not powerful enough to either cool or heat the place. It gets cold and damp at night by the lake in January and we had to sleep in our down jackets, that is how cold it was. The bathroom is one of the biggest I have ever seen, but very badly organized, e.g. there is only one sink. There is an enormous wooden bathtub, which I decided to try out of curiosity. It took 45 minutes to get enough hot water just to cover me, and after all that I spent about two minutes in the tub it was so uncomfortable.

The internet never worked, which was very annoying for us.
The staff are adorable, which is the best thing you can say about this hotel. It is preferable to eat on the terrasse even when it is cold, as the dining room is like a cantine.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms 108 and 107 which are next to the jetty, and hence very noisy.

The experience of getting to and from the resort was great. Although not exactly on the lake, but a slough, the location is good enough. There are other accommodations on the lake itself. Good points: beautiful rooms are very spacious, with a view of the lake; bathroom almost like a spa, so nicely decorated, fresh petals included -- reminiscent of the interior of the Oberoi tents in Ranthambore, India. Hot water bottles at bedtime were so wonderful to have in the cool climate. Staff, in general, is composed of the nicest people on earth -- so mild and caring, especially when they know you need assistance. They were only too happy to fix my longji every time they saw me scramble up or down the steps. This is the magic of the resort. What affects the magic negatively is the availability of cheaper meals, especially since we were quite isolated -- or so it seemed. It appeared that we had no other option, especially at night, when taking the boat around the dark waters to another village was not the way to go. Restaurant food was average, and very expensive. Breakfast buffet, though, was quite good -- especially the noodle station -- very comforting. Lastly, beware of the spa. I had a lovely massage -- 2 hands only. The silence was wonderful. However, my two other companions who asked for 4 hands massage had terrible experiences. The therapists given were totally inexperienced, and had terrible colds and coughs. On top of that, they were giggling, to the dismay of my companions. The spa setting is lovely. However, the service needs major upgrading. Blankets were not provided to keep the clients warm -- leaving the clients back bare in the cold. Tea served before and after was cold. This is what destroyed the magic for us. On top of that they were only giving 10% discount for such inferior service. However, in the end, we ended up paying a fraction of the cost after many arguments with the hotel manager, which even included the notion of bad service and bad karma. Still, the magic was downgraded.

Room Tip: Rooms are generally very nice. However, beware of the spa service -- still not up to par with the o...

The hotel is located on the waterfront and we are arrived and departed by boat. The grounds are quite nice and the elegant lobby was open to the outside. The Wifi never worked here in spite of giving us the password. The power went out frequently. Our room was very, very large.... uncomfortably large. The staff placed rose petals on the bed and bathtub, which although a nice touch we would have preferred none. The mosquito net was set up every evening during turn down service. The restaurant food was mediocre, especially the breakfast which appeared to be leftovers from the night before. We felt that this hotel is older and not quite as nice as the sister property, Aureum in Bagan. That being said, we had a lovely stay and you have to remember we're in the middle of Myanmar!

Seems like there has been mixed reviews of this property. My partner and I stayed for 4 nights in January and had a very enjoyable time. Our second row bungalow was huge and luxurious much more so than appeared from the outside. While the views are not fabulous, they suffice. I wonder if a bungalow higher up on the third tier might have better views. We saw the digger that has been mentioned in other reviews but our room was on the opposite side where it was parked.
We very much enjoyed the staff. They are young and once we engaged with them, tried out few Burmese words, they were totally delightful and made our stay so enjoyable.
One thing to be aware of is that it is near impossible to go for dinner anywhere but outside of the hotel since there are no boats nor taxis to take you anywhere. We were disappointed about that but made the most of it and ended up feeling satisfied and enjoyed the break from Asian food.

Each night a rose was left in the room when the mosquito nets were put into place on the beds. Also appropriate for the cold nights a hot water bag was put under the sheets and blanket.

The breakfast buffet was extensive, so much so that one did not know where to start - or stop

The hotel faces onto Inle Lake which is a gorgeous view.We left each day for sightseeing in a boat from their pier.
In Bagan we stayed at their hotel and did not like the old room which need refurbishing. This was excellent!

We stayed four nights at the Aureum Palace and enjoyed it very much. The rooms are huge and luxuriously decorated. In January the nights are cold and we appreciated the hot water bottles we found every night in our bed.
When I read, that people are complaining about the slow Internet and they cannot do important work - well this is a place to relax! By the way there was is fast internet in Myanmar.
We want to say thank you to the friendly staff, specially to Pa Pa Min, who does a great job.

We stayed at it's sister property in Bagan and loved it. Were hoping for the same experience here but were sadly disappointed. First of all, it is NOT on the lake. It is on a slough at best. To make matters worse we arrived to open our front drapes to the view of a digger. I asked for a different room but they said they would move the digger, which they did for half a day. The next day I laid sick in bed all day listening to what sounded like road construction out my front door. It is very cold and hard to get warm in the paper thin rooms. if you get up at night the bathroom is a fair distance away down steps in the dark. Not very well designed. The property is over priced although the massage was a good value and we enjoyed the restaurant. The staff are very friendly and the only redeeming feature.
