“Lovely location”
Reviewed 7 April 2013

We stayed here with an Explore! Tour which, by the way, was excellent. We were greeted with a music performance and a welcome drink, and porters carried our luggage to the room, just as well as there is no lift. The room was a bit tired really, there was a fridge and air con (although we didn’t really use it as the temp was comfortable, there was a fan as well and we used that), but power was limited and you couldn’t have too much on at once. The décor was a bit faded, there were no bedside lights and so we had to read in bed with the overhead light. But it was clean and comfortable, and there was some internet in the room. The room safe was a drawer with a key. We didn’t have a plug in the sink but they provided one (once I went down and drew a picture as English was rudimentary). Breakfast was good, noodle soup highly recommended, and there were restaurants, market and shops nearby.

Nyaung Shwe is a very small town and you can see this hotel from all around as it is one of the tallest buildings and is painted yellow. Chinese run with, basic and functional. I stayed on the top floor (5th) and found it perfectly quiet enough. The noisiest thing was the old air conditioning whirring, which also dripped onto the corner of the bed. There are mosquito nets on the windows if you want to open them. The room was clean. Beds are hard but the sheets were clean. The towels, as other travellers have mentioned, are stained and old, but were in fact clean. The bathroom is basic, no separate shower unit, but plenty of hot water. We got one small toilet roll which, when finished, was not replaced. Small fridge with a couple of bottles of free water and some beers and soft drinks in the mini bar. Very old TV but reception was OK. No safe deposit boxes in the rooms. There are also no lifts in this hotel. Reception staff were friendly and there were lots of staff around all the time, so from a safety point of view it would not be easy to enter if you were not a guest. We stayed in the main bit of the hotel but there is also an annex which looked a bit more up market next door. Breakfast is served in a separate open room at the back of the hotel which is pretty chilly early in the morning. This hotel has lots of groups of tourists passing through and breakfast can be busy with full tables early in the morning. There is hot coffee and tea and also different juices each day (avocado juice nice). Small choice of bread and cakes and eggs to order. Shan breakfast noodles very good and much fresher and tastier than the Western food. Location of hotel is good, just a block away from the streets where you will find restaurants and small shops. Only a short walk from the pier to take a boat onto the lake.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor are quiet but there is no lift

Came as part of our Explore tour. Rooms were spacious with hard beds with rock hard pillows, but thankfully some softer cushions were available. Woken by dogs and cockerels every morning, but otherwise quiet. Very close to lots of restaurants and very close to Inle Lake boats. Some nice little shops nearby - especially the one with paper shades made locally. Great breakfast bar - order the Shan noodles - they are delicious! Recommended.

Hupin (pronounced HooPan for the locals) has a decent location. Their cheap rooms were decent, air conditioned, came with refrigerator, TV, and complimentary water. Bathrooms were ok for a guy, and hot water was available. Breakfast was excellent with a lot of options. WHEN to visit Inle - TIME your visit so you can make it to the floating market day at Inle (check online sites).
Hiring a BOAT - do NOT hire at the hotel. Not on the road. Walk to the most popular dock - near the View restaurant, make sure you have four people in your group, and speak DIRECTLY to the boat man. Day rates as of Feb 2013 are ~15-20k kyats. Note that it takes about 1-1.5 hours to get to most Inle attractions from Nyaung Shwe by boat.
SHOPPING - Inle is great for silverware, and Inle textiles. You will get your best prices at the market on market day, not at the shops your boatman takes you, as I found out. So, do your tour of Inle lake first with the obligatory stops at silver and textile shops for window-shopping, but do not buy. the next day go to the market day market, and look for the pieces you saw at the silver and textile shops the day before. You will be tempted to buy - for yourself, friends or relatives.
By the way, this hotel had rooms available, at a time people were complaining about lack of room availability in Inle.

Room Tip: See tips in the review - on rooms, hiriing boats, and shopping.

Again, by western standards this is pretty average, but for Myanmar it's fine. Firm bed, rock hard pillows (urgh), tv, and the usual slow wifi. Good location, although most of Inle is very walkable. Their restaurant across the road is really very good. If you can, order the Shan cuisine meal. It has to be ordered 24 hours before, but it's great.

Stayed here with our Explore tour. The hotel is located in a quiet spot just off the main street. Rooms are spacious and clean and with wifi, fridge, (noisy) aircon and opening windows with mosquito screens. Beds comfortable and everything worked and was clean if a little spartan. The breakfast buffet was pretty good with an egg/omelette station and a good choice of dishes.
Lots of restaurants within a short walk.
Recommended.

Room Tip: The higher the better for quietness

I probably wouldn't have chosen Hupin Hotel when there are several nicer hotels in town, but presumably you can get good deals as it's full of tour groups (including mine). It's one of the biggest buildings in town, so easy to spot. Our bedroom was small and very basic, with twin beds only. Sheets are clean; towels clean but stained. Free wifi during the day. Weak aircon. No safe (and the one at reception was full). Pleasant staff. There's an attached bar, which doubles as a breakfast area with a small but decent buffet selection. Location is good. Their adjacent restaurant is also good. And I slept quite well.
