We didn't book in advance any hotel in Nyanug U and after checking other places we decided to stay in Grand Empire. After some bargaing we paid 28 USD for standard double room. After the deal was finished they tried to change the price and that was unpleasant. The hotel is located not far from the local market and very close to shops and many restaurants. The dining room for breakfast is outside the hotel. The room was quite musty and after 3 days all our clothes smelled damp. From the other hand, the staff was helpfull, the breakfast was tasty with different choices and local specialities. There is small and nice sitting area in front of the hotel where you can watch the road. The electric bikes are available for rent for 8 USD for the whole day, but we found the bikes for 6 USD. To summarize - Grand Empire is not a bad option for staying in Bagan but if you have more time, you can look for better places.

Grand Empire is a strange hotel. Room was comfortable, but the staff was unpredictable. At one point they tried to get rid of us a day early because another couple was sick and they needed the room. They were going to kick us out on the street! Then they offered the laundry room for us to sleep on the floor I guess. In the end we were able to stay in our room (we weren't going anywhere anyway) but it was a strange experience.

Other staff on the other hand were quite helpfull.

Breakfast very good.

We stayed in the $30 double room (cheapest option), they have more expensive rooms $40 +.
Our room was next to reception area, so we could hear the noise in the morning and evening, but wasn't bad enough to wake us, room was clean, shower could be hotter, sheets / bedding was very clean. Location is ok, about a 5-10 min walk to the main to roads with all the restaurants.

Centrally located along the main road in Nuang U the hotel is within easy walking distance to the market, general stores & restaurants (my favourite were Cheriland & Schwe Moe). We had a small double room with breakfast, ac, hot shower, fridge, tea/coffee facilities & TV (with HBO, star movies & star sports - great to keep you occupied in the heat of the day). The staff here are wonderful & so helpful. This place is about $10 more than the other guesthouses along this road, but it was definitely money well spent.

This is the newest hotel in Nyuang U, just opened in Dec 2012. Clean and spacious room. Good air-con and hot shower. Located in the main street, just near the famous Golden Myanmar Guesthouse. Near the pier and the coach terminal. The most impressed is the friendly staff. They served the guests with heart and made us feel like home. The price of the horse cart the manager recommended was reasonable. I also hired the hotel car with driver for a half-day trip at a highly competitive rate. Strongly recommended!!!

I switched to this hotel after staying at another hotel just a couple of doors away. It was so much nicer for the price and looks relatively new (8 months old according to the staff). Everybody was pleasant and eager to please. The only real negatives would be that the staff didn't seem as knowledgable regarding recommendations and how to book tours (like bus, day trips etc) but on the plus side they were willing to find out. Also there seemed to be more Mosquitos in my room than I saw elsewhere in Myanmar. Other than that great stay.

We had previously been booked at the Greenland Motel but upon arrival were sent on to the Eden hotel - omg!!!! Urgggg do not go to the Eden!!!!!

As we were walking around town and came on The Grand Empire by chance we decided to ask the rates - then went back to the Eden and checked out 2 hrs after checking in!

The guy on reception offered to show us the 3 rooms available at the rates $30, $35 & $45 - we decided to take the $30 one one the ground floor. Admittedly not a huge room but perfect for us. After the first night we decided to move to a room on the next floor as it had two beds. This too was a nice room for $35.

The Grand Empire has only been open 2.5 mths and has new mattresses pillows & bedding. Remote control Aircon is great - fridge has mini bar of soft drinks (pay as you go), free bottles of water each day, kettle with nescafe coffee & green tea. I think there was a hairdryer as well.
Rooms are serviced every day

All areas are clean clean clean and well maintained.

Wifi was only in the lobby - hopefully they will get in rooms in the near future.

Electric does go off sometimes much the same as most of the rest of Myanmar so make sure you have a torch in your luggage!

They have their own restaurant which has two sides open so was lovely to sit 'outside' and have breakfast & lunch. Breakfast at the weekend was a 'buffet' style - weekdays we had a menu.

Situated in the middle of town - plenty of nice restaurants - also lots of bike rentals for an easy 35 mins into Bagan and the temples.

To sum up - we were most impressed with The Grand Empire and its very lovely staff
Thanks to all who made our stay a great one - we hope your hotel thrives - it certainly deserves to!!

Please tick the box if this review has been of help to you - Thank you.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the upper floors as they may be quieter
