“Don't stay here!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2014

Room looks like a butchers shop. Bugs everywhere! Dirt and cobwebs that have been here since the dinosaurs roamed. Staff unfriendly, Cambodian men lounging around the main entrance all day! No lockers! No room key, room left open all day. Pillows like bricks. Don't book buses via the hotel as charge u a ridiculous amount! Window onto the corridor with broken window and lacked a curtain. Stained towels. Why this is in the lonely planets book I do not know?!?!

Chhaya Hotel is the most miserable establishment we stayed in on our travels throughout Cambodia. The issues are as follows: 1. Bed bugs
2. Mold all over the bathroom
3. Cobwebs everywhere
4. Dust that hadn't been removed since it was first constructed
5. Decor which hadn't been changed or fixed since it was built
6. Unfriendly, resentful and unhelpful staff
7. Locals constantly roaming the prison-like corridors

The positives:
1. Good location

Do not follow the Lonely Planet 'Top Choice' review. This tar pit has obviously rapidly declined since they achieved their mention. You can stay somewhere just as cheap and get a clean room that doesn't feel like a prison. We're pretty chilled travelers who aren't fussy, but this place is an absolute hole.

It's a good and cheap hotel. For 5 dollars you can get a double room with TV, own bathroom etc. however the towel didn't look that clean and outside the room there wasn't that clean either.
But apart from that it's a really cheap and good hotel, the room was good.

Good enough price but that's the only good thing about the place. The staff were nice at first but as soon as you needed something they got a little rude. The towel that was waiting for me in my room was dirty. One day I had an emergency and asked the front desk to use a phone. All I got was a smug and snarky "No" and no suggestion of where one could be found.

There were also always random locals hanging around the place and as soon as you walk downstairs in the morning you're bombarded by aggressive tuk tuk drivers.

There are other hotels in the same price range that are much less of a hassel.

When I arrived, I was told that there was no record of my booking, but they could squeeze me in as long as I changed rooms twice. There was no hot water, the toilets weren't cleaned and I didn't get a towel or blanket for my bed! It was so noisy that I could barely sleep, you definitely get what you pay for!

We did not stay at the Chhaya Hotel but saw that it ran a service from Battambang to Koh Chang.

It was $22 from the front desk, you were given mobile numbers for contacts in both the Thai and Canbodian sides.

Here is how it worked out:

1.) Taxi to Poi Pet border crossing. It should have been a mini bus but obviously not enough people. Taxi left half hour late but driver was safe and got to border in 2 hours.

2.) At border we were met by someone who gave us lanyards and saw us through the Cambodian side of immigration.

3.) After passing through Thai side, we walked to the tourist information centre where we waited about 1/2 hour.

4.) We were then taken to a restaurant to wait (and buy food but it was lunchtime and the food and milkshakes were good) for the minibus to arrive from Koh Chang. We waited for another hour and half in total before the bus was filled (one person to each seat plus bags so a bit cramped but not unbearable) and we left.

5.) Minbus driver was safe and we got to trat in about 4 hours including two breaks.

6.) In Trat, you are unloaded into the arms of a taxi firm trying to sell you onward journey to your hotel in Koh Chang. We refused and they threw a childish strop telling us to carry our own bags onto the boat, it was only 20m so no love lost there!

7.) Boat crossing took one hour

8.) Got cheaper taxi in Koh Chang.

Not the ideal journey but two minibuses, it was certainly the easiest option rather than the other option which involved about 9 different transport options.

We stayed for two nights - the room and the entire hotel actually were depressing enough, but we took it due to the excellent price (5 usd / double room). But ... Here comes the big BUT - it was so noisy throughout the night we could hardly sleep (tv at the corridor, cleaners talking loudly at 5 am, locals doing their hygiene - awfull nose/throat noises at the same ungodly hour...), the room stank of mildew and the staff did nothing for us to feel welcome. I am sure there are worse places etc., and it ´ s doable if you are only going to crash there after a long day, but i am still sure you can do a lot better.
