Description: The Tibetan mantra,"Om Mani Padme Hum" roughly translating as, "All hail the jewel in the lotus" is said to contain all the teachings of the Buddha within its 6 syllables and will confer great peace, health benefits and the removal of suffering to those who repeat it regularly. Set in a lovingly restored colonial shophouse, Battambang's Jewel in the lotus is a vegetarian restaurant with a juice, smart bar and shop downstairs, while upstairs houses the Lotus Gallery. The restaurant downstairs serves a selection of salads, dips and daily specials all with a focus on health and vitality. While the bar, serves cold pressed juices and various delicious and refreshing tonics and tinctures. The downstairs environment is cool and comfortable and filled with all manner of strange and beautiful objects. Artworks and prints, Clothes and jewellery from India, Vintage Vietnamese coloured vinyl records, old Khmer photographs and postcards, Underground comix and literature, crystals ... The list is endless! The Gallery upstairs is one of Cambodia's foremost artspaces and features new exhibitions every three months or so. The venue often has interesting events, presentations, poetry evenings, music and documentary films, so check local press for up to date information. Jewel in the Lotus is at 53, St 2.5, opposite the Battambang Traveller Boutique and is open every day except Sunday, from 8am till 5 pm.

“More Important Things... ”
Reviewed 17 July 2014 via mobile

My friends and I ate here with high hopes after reading a handful of reviews on the establishment. Much to our dismay, our expectations were slowly dashed over the course of the evening.

The decour is stylish and reformed, and the Cambodian front of house staff were all very friendly. The main food portions were a reasonable size too. Sadly, that's where the positivity ends.

We ordered two beefs Lok-Laks, which tasted like Beef and Onion Hula-Hoops and when chewed had the texture of rubber (the meat was clearly overcooked). Not the traditional dish we had enjoyed at other Khmer restaurants.

The large houmous was misleading. We expected a big portion of houmous, but got a laughable amount, that actually tasted as bland as it looked. Given that the carrots, cucumber, and pitta bread that accompanied it were plentiful we expected more. I'd hate to see the small portion.

The crowning glory of the evening was the owner. He clearly has no grasp of customer service. My girlfriend ordered a Khmer chicken curry off one of the many laminated menu inserts we were handed upon arrival. It stated the curry was available with vegetables or chicken, both for the price of $4.50. When we came to pay we were being charged $5, as the another menu states a different price.

Now don't misinterpret me as a cheap individual, but fleetingly I thought that given how the curry on the menu we ordered from was priced as less, it should be honoured. The kind staff went to ask the owner who came down only to try and make me feel like an imbecile for questioning the price. He gave us the curry for $4.50 without hesitation, but in a manner that was both rude and insinuating I was being tight over such a small monetary amount. He then proceeded to tell me he had 'more important things to deal with' and hobbled back upstairs. A great attitude that has now landed his restaurant it's first poor review. Congratulations!

All my reviews on trip advisor thus far have been positive and I'd much rather praise an establishment than slander it. Our visit may have been an anomali, but the owner forced my hand.

Seriously, price things correctly and get some manners, I hear they cost less than 50 cents you know.

Alex

The atmosphere there is just amazing. It is very cool and vibrant bar/restaurant with many expats hanging around.
Food is very good, although pretty expensive.

“Coffee and art”
Reviewed 21 June 2014

Finally a place where they serve good Italian coffee. This gallery café is very charming and the staff is as usual friendly. The café is located in a quiet street in the city center and somehow manages to bring life to the neighborhood with their art performances. According to the staff the exposed art is from local artists (indicating that they are not scam artists and therefore more expensive?!).

Good luck to the artists getting out of Battambang! Some are quiet interesting and I hope the best for them.
