Hacienda Los Andes
Reviewed 4 June 2013

We spent a weekend camping at the Hacienda at the start of May. It´s in a beautiful location up in the hills. Although we didn´t have a car, the bus dropped us right outside. The campsite is around a 10 minute walk from the Hacienda itself, and is is a quiet little hideaway by the river. We loved being out our own but still having the security and commodity of the hacienda. We made our own campfire, and took many of our supplies with us. There are no shops nearby. However, we hiked 1.5 hours to Hurtado (the closest village) in the day where there are a few little shops, and the senery was beautiful. The people at the Hacienda were very welcoming and we did the observatory tour on site which was a real highlight...great value for money, with a very knowledgable guide and beautifully clear skies. There ar no shower failities by the campsite....I liked this as I think an ugly shower block would spoil the setting, but not so great if you don´t fancy the walk to the Hacienda. My only criticism would be to offer cheaper or low season rates for the Hacienda itself as camping is a very old option in winter!

A wonderfully relaxing place towards the top of the valley. The last 20 kms is dirt track but well worth the minor challenge to get there. Hosts very welcoming. Everything beautifully organized. Try out the hammocks in the shade, potter along the river, breakfast on the terrace, gaze at the mountains, go hiking, and wait for the flyover of parrots at dusk. We loved it all and would highly recommend it for those who enjoy peace and quiet.

For somewhere so remote, the hacienda is very well appointed. The rooms are quite large ( I have to disagree with a previous review there) and pleasantly if spartanly furnished. Beds are quite hard.
Again, unlike a previous reviewer, I had no quarrel with the bread, although Chilean pan amasado is not exactly the best in the world. The juices and jams were made with local fruits, and there was always a bowl of fruit for the picking. It would have been nice if there were tea and coffee on tap as well. The recourse set menu for dinner was good, and we were told in advance what it would be, so any personal fads could be catered to.
The staff, and many guests, are German. The former all speak English and a bit of Spanish. Two of them are usually on a six month stint only, so they could be different people in a month or two. They were all personable but quite low key. They are not professional hotel people, and they do indeed know more about horses than about the hospitality business.
My transfers in and out worked well, although there was an extra charge (15,000p not excessive) for the bumpy ride to Vicuña rather than to Ovalle. Several guests had ridden there on motorcycles.
The village is about seven km away, so unless you have a vehicle you are confined to the premises somewhat. There are some nice trails and an observatory to visit at night (small extra charge).
I did the Condor Ride, five days in the saddle and quite hard going, but good fun. You need to be quite fit and a confident rider for this one, the horses are sure footed and fearless. I did think it was overpriced compared with similar trips I have done in this and other parts of the world.

R U German and do you like clear planning, full support and quality service for your holiday?
Then you will find it there – all team is from Germany (+ of course local people) and is super professional.

Food is more than Ok and prices also.
The location is beautiful (but maybe boring after 2/3 days if U R the horses lover) and so the Hacienda

I was there for 2 nights.
Driving there form Valley del Elqui was hard but amazing experience.
The first evening I did simply jogging along the river and then enjoyed food and stars in the night
The next day I went for a super hiking tour on the mountain (well, if U do not like the desert, not the right thing I would say) and the again a simple evening

I left the day after in the morning

Again, worth to do, especially for couples / groups, but if U R planning horses rides, no need to stay more than 1/3 nights

We stayed two nights at this hacienda/hotel. The place is charmingly decorated and kept impeccably clean. The rooms are not large but quite adequate. Bathroom has a shower and no tub, but everything is well kept and clean. Food was excellent, a very generous breakfast buffet and an excellent dinner. We always were offered freshly baked bread. Of course, given the rather remote location and the limited number of guest rooms (only six) it would be quite unfair to expect a wide range of menu options, but in our case we requested in advance a different choice of entree for some group members and this was resolved without any problems. In fact our few special requests were met with friendliness and care.

There are very nice well-marked walks on the premises. All seems to be thoroughly planned and well maintained with a clear and visible concern for the environment. One aspect you should be aware of is that there is no swimming pool. For some this may be a shortcoming, as in summer this can be a very hot area. You can take a bath in the river, but it s not adequate for swimming.

We were very pleased with our stay and will come back as soon as we get the chance.

Hacienda Los Andes is a charming hotel tucked away in the desert topography that surrounds the small town of Hurtado. A long driveway leads to the entrance of the hacienda, decked in Spanish colonial mission style.

The three young women who work there are German citizens who speak German, Spanish, English and French. One of them showed me to my room, which was furnished with two twin beds, a long table, a small room lamp atop a night table, and a few hangers for clothing.

The bathroom was small but adequate. It had a shower but no bathtub. There was plenty of hot water and clean towels.

I had dinner and breakfast there: both quite good.

What I liked most about the place was the perfusion of colorful flowers, cacti, and many trees and bushes. A pretty fountain graced a small area in front of the Reception.
