As an avid skier, Portillo has been on my bucket list for a long time. The hotel, the amenities, the staff and the food are all top notch. Especially the food and the dining room staff.
Be prepared to be spoiled. And I'm not just talking about the 3 course lunch and dinners. I'm talking about Enrique in the boot storage, who always seemed to know when I would arrive and the very attentive ski check staff. This is the ultimate ski in and ski out resort.
The only downside to Portillo is the limited terrain for beginner and intermediate skiers. There is very little. As a matter of fact, if you ski mainly blues and greens, you can cover the whole resort in a half of a day. Since most people stay at Portillo for a week, it might night be worth it, if you are not an expert skier.
The other draw back is the location, right next to a major road between Argentina and Chile. I had the impression that this was a remote, quiet location. There semi trailer truck traffic is non stop. One of the lifts even carries you over the road and the traffic.
The amenities of the hotel and the attention the guests receive is amazing. For myself, that overshadowed the limited terrain that we encountered.
