Explora Atacama lies above 8000 feet in the high Chilean desert. It is one of many lodges of all levels in the town, but is the most up-scale (and expensive) in accommodations. The rooms surround a large courtyard, the center building of which contains the public rooms and a large restaurant with an outdoor deck used for lunch. Our room was generous in size with a small sitting area with table and chairs and a large full length window looking out over a pasture. We had an attractive stone bathroom, but with a tub/shower combo rather than a walk-in.
Soon after arrival, you are informed about the available sights, tours, and activities, discuss your desires and limitations with one of the manager guides, make your choices, and are assigned a guide and departure times. These can be changed easily daily.
We wanted to see the entire area, so asked for the longer tours to the high Altiplano and the geysers, to the flamingo salt pools, and to the archeological sites (and museum). Others, especially the younger families, are more interested in biking, hiking, horse rides, and snowboarding the sand dunes. Groups are separated according to desires and physical capabilities.
The restaurant offered excellent, friendly service. The food was very good, some dishes excellent, but not memorable.
Our guides and drivers were all excellent. We were very lucky to enjoy the personal service of the head guide, Juan Carlos.

We spent 6 nights here in mid-March, and we had a phenomenal experience. This is an all-inclusive hotel, and the attention to guest comfort and food and experience is amazing! The bed was really comfortable, and the shower was awesome; the food was varied and delicious; both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages were delicious.

You wouldn't come here just to hang out by the pool, but there are 4 beautiful pools. And we had the best massages we have ever had in our lives.

But the highlight of this place is the excursions. Outstanding hiking, with knowledgeable, helpful guides. They have horses and bicycles, too, but those are not our thing, so, other than a short bike ride, we just did hiking.

And every one of the hotel's employees was nice and helpful.

From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome and at home. The hotel is luxurious but in an understated way. Our room was large, with a very comfortable bed and a superb bathroom, and the main building stretching through reception, bar, guides room and restaurant is beautifully designed so that the views are all around.
We were a little worried that the expeditions would be a little hard for us, 66 & 77 respectively, both with mobility problems, but the guides planned suitable trips without making us feel unadventurous, and we were able to see most of the main sites in our 4 days, including an unforgettable visit to the geysers and thermal pools.
The restaurant staff coped very well with the fact that my wife doesn't eat meat, and were able to offer several alternatives whenever necessary-and they were quick to anticipate her request for"Earl Grey tea with a jug of cold milk".
The gesture of a bottle of champagne for our wedding anniversary was greatly appreciated.
We thank all the staff for making our visit to this amazing part of the world so enjoyable.

My husband and I have done a lot of traveling and this experience at Larache Explora is at the very top of our list. The excursions and experience of being in the desert are unparalleled. Aside from breathtaking scenery, the hotel service, food and amenities are just top notch. Can not say which was our favorite outing but walking the Cactus trail, biking Valley of the Moon and lazing in thermal hot springs are all not to be missed. The GM Juan Pablo is terrific and along with the wonderful guides will make sure you have an unforgettable stay.

This was our third Explora after Patagonia and Rapa Nui so we knew the ropes and spent 4 nights ( you really need to).
Excellent welcome and initial briefing. Invidious to mention any particular member of staff because we found everyone from manager, marvellous guides, bar and waiting staff and front desk delightful and helpful and knowledgable beyond belief.

Cactus walk and Puritana were memorable, and the pool area would put to shame a luxury hotel on the worlds best beaches

You are not really going for the food which was perhaps a bit bland ( and repetitive salads) but nonetheless a high standard
As always at Explora you will meet interesting fellow travellers who add to your experience.
As club members we had an upgrade after one night from Yali room to a suite - spacious and very well appointed. Don't worry about no wifi and tv in the bedroom- it works well in the bar/lounge area and it's nice to switch off a bit.
