“Haven in the Andes”
Reviewed 7 June 2014

Two hours from Santiago, Tumunan is tucked into the Andes, surrounded by vineyards, lovely landscaping and wild blackberries everywhere if you time it right.
We visited in March and Will and his wife made our group of six feel as if we were visitors in their home, not just a lodge. The food was terrific. And Will, the owner, set up some amazing adventures. We toured a variety of wineries--small and private, large and established. We had a private wine tasting along with an evening astronomy show at the lodge. We had a great time fly fishing. Then Will put together two different horse rides. One was a one-night adventure where we tented beside a plumbed house where we ate a lovely dinner at a table cooked on a stone grill.
The second was a three-day ride into the Andes. This time we tented in more typical fashion, except our Chilean guides brought grass-fed lamb and cooked it to perfection on a wood fire at night. We also had asado steaks and the traditional choripanes--sausage rolls, all topped by freely flowing Carmenere wine. Perfect.
The lodge also has a beautiful pool, a wood-fired hot tub and plenty of opportunities to hike around the area. We had a great visit.

Room Tip: There were three comfortable rooms in the main area. They all were similar. The two-room area at t...

My wife, daughter, and I stayed at Tumunan Lodge after a day of sight seeing in Santa Cruz. We should have arrived earlier in the day to enjoy our stay even more. The lodge is not on any beaten path...and this adds to its charm. The lodge is surrounded by beautiful gardens and the Andes. Carolina and Will were outstanding hosts. Carolina created a beautiful dinner of roast pork with sides, and finished the meal with fresh strawberries in a cracked pepper reduction. Will regaled me with stories until after midnight from his fly fishing days in Patagonia and his surfing days at Pichilemu...all served up with a fine glass (or two or three or four) of Chilean Cabernet. Breakfast in the morning was hearty and delicious. If you want a distinctive over night accommodation in the Cholchagua wine tasting region, you cannot go wrong with a stay here.

Tumunan Lodge was the perfect place to spend the last two days of our holiday, in a beautiful location surrounded by mountains. You feel miles away from anywhere, but in reality are only 40 minutes' drive from San Fernando and within easy reach of Santiago.

The lodge is set in a beautiful garden, with a good-sized pool and a wonderful hot tub, which we really enjoyed in early May, when the evenings can be a bit chilly. We also appreciated the log fires inside. We did a half-day horse ride up the valley to a lake and waterfall, which gave us good views of the snow-capped mountains, and spent the rest of the time walking round the property, admiring the well-tended vineyard (with high hopes for wine next year), accompanied by the two very friendly dogs, and sitting in the sun.

Will and Carolina could not have been more welcoming and attentive. They took time to answer all our questions, and we really enjoyed talking to them about the lodge and surrounding area. They are also very accomplished cooks (highlights were a fabulous boeuf bourguignon and nicely spicy curry) and serve some excellent wines, including one of the best we drank in Chile. We hope to return and taste some Tumunan Lodge wine in future. Like the lodge, it will no doubt be first class!

My husband and I worked at the lodge with Will and Carolina for a couple of weeks, the lodge is beautiful and Will and Carolina are excellent hosts both to there guests and there staff.
The lodge is off the beaten track but in such a beautiful place. Third OS plenty to do there, from walking around the estate and up to there neighbours water fall to fly fishing and horse trekking.
We went horse trekking, what an experience... It was a full day trek where we climbed up the valley where you can see Argentina and one side and Chile on the other, magnificent views... We ached for a few days but wow I wouldn't of changed anything..
I would defiently return in the future, for both pleasure or work.
We had a brilliant time and were made to feel like part of the family.
Thank you

Last Friday we spent a day with Viña Casa Silva at Tumunan Lodge. What a great, peaceful and wonderful place to be and how kind and helpful the owners William and Carolina are, supported by a great crew. Riding a horse for the very first time in my life was a great experience as well as enjoying the beautiful environment and waterfall in the mountains when riding the horse. After the ride we enjoyed a more than great BBQ with lovely fresh food. For a next time I will certainly try to spend the night and also enjoy the beautiful garden, swimmimg pool and warm water tubs. Briefly: Tumunan Lodge is a place to recommend!

Will and Carolina have created “Heaven on Earth” at Tumunan Lodge. We (3 couples) stayed at Tumunan 9 nights from 15-24 March after our Princess Cruise around Cape Horn that ended in Valparaiso. One of our best stays anywhere.

Will arranged for car pickup at Valparaiso and also for car to take us back to Santiago airport after our stay. Trip takes about 2-3 hours but lovely drive thru wine country. Tumunan Lodge is off the beaten track which makes it wonderful. Will and Carolina have two beautiful young children and two great dogs on a beautifully landscaped property. The lodge is very comfortable. The bedrooms are nice but a little on the small side--great bathrooms.

Day 1—Delicious seafood dinner prepared by Carolina with fabulous Chilean wines selected by Will. We ate all our meals at the lodge because they were cheap, creative, healthy and delicious. Will has wine list of about 20 really good local wines at good prices for the quality of wines. Did swim in the lovely large pool followed by great hot tub. Did a one mile walk of the property, picking and eating hundreds of fresh blackberries and seeing the new (2 years old) 8,000 vine vineyard that Will has planted.

Day 2—Wine tasting at two fabulous wineries. First was a boutique winery (MW) of friends of Will’s. They hand picked all their grapes from vines in small bins and then hand removed individual grapes from wine. Great tour of their winery followed by “whole family gathering” to sample their wines with delicious cheese and meat tray. Their 73% camenere/27% cabernet sauvignon blend was one of best wines I have ever had. We followed this wine tasting with a wine tour and lunch at a large winery Casa Silva. Great tour and lunch with wine pairings sitting outside looking at the Andes and their polo field.

Day 3-4-Horse Trek (6.5 hours), Camping, and 2.5 hr walk back to the Lodge. Wondeful horse back ride climbing 4,000 feet with lunch up in the Andes and then back to Glamour (sort of) camping that night. Had real toilets and showers and we had great steak dinner with unlimited wine and beer. We slept in sleeping bags on small tents on grass. Had wonderful scrambled egg breakfast in the AM. We then walked back to the lodge spending 30 minutes at a waterfall for another delicious lunch and dinner by Carolina.

Day 4 evening—Wine tasting and astronomy with Will’s friend Ian. Ian brought us 6 wonderful local wines to taste, including his famous meteorite wine. See http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/24/worlds-first-meteorite-wine_n_1228336.html Then he took us outside to see the stars—he is a wonderful amateur astronomer. What a special evening

Day 5 and 6. Fly fish lessons and fly fishing in a lovely Andes stream with Will. Lots of more good food and wine at Will’s house. Our one experienced fly fisherman caught 10 small trout which he caught and released. Lots of fun.

Day 7-9. 3 day and 2 night adventure horse trek far up into the Andes. The highlight of our trip was this fabulous horse trek. We asked for the short (5-6 hours a day on horses) horse trek and were glad we did because for infrequent riders that was plenty of riding especially after the long horse trek earlier in the week. Challenging and beautiful riding up and down the Andes and thru brush and streams. Horses were great as well as the saddles. Two mules carried all our clothes, tents and food. Camping was primitive in small tents but very comfortable because we were provided for much cushioning under our sleeping bags. Food was exceptional cooked over campfire—rack of lamb one night and steak the next night. Again unlimited and excellent Chilean wine. Will was our guide and we had a Chilean father and son team that managed the horses and mules and helped Will with the food. Finished Day 3 ride early in the PM and enjoyed two more excellent meals from Carolina at the lodge as well as the pool and hottub.

One couple in our group went on a private tour to Santa Cruz for the day to a wonderful museum with fabulous lunch. Wish we had had time to go with them.

Day 10 Back to the airport to fly to Mendoza

Room Tip: King room is the best. Choice of king, queen or two twins plus a family room

Great place, lovely hosts, cracking food, excellent wine list, good fishing, lovely walking, excellent large swimming pool and very comfortable rooms. What more could you ask? Shame I couldn't bring it home with me to the UK!

The Tripadvisor location says it is in Santa Cruz, I think, but this is wrong - it's about 40 minutes east of San Fernando off the highway.

Room Tip: The rooms are mostly all the same, I think.
