“mid-priced B&B/Hotel with great location and owners”
Reviewed 10 December 2013

If you love wines and want to visit wineries in the Conchagua Valley area Terra Viña, with its great location, is an excellent choice. The owners make all the difference as other mid-priced hotels/motels in the area may not have their owners operating the premises every day. Positive aspects of this hotel/motel/B&B include:

1) It is surrounded by a vineyard through which you walk when you want to go to the Laura Hartwig Winery or the Vino Bello restaurant. (Sidenote: Both are excellent choices whether to finish a day of winery tours with a great meal, or start a day with a quick visit to the winery.)
2) The owners are extremely helpful whether you need reservations or directions to the many wineries and restaurants in the area.
3) The owners also are experienced enough to spot potential issues before they arise. In our case our stayed overlapped with a large group that took ~80% of the rooms for a one-day celebration. From the first day we checked in we were assigned to a remote room so we could be far away from the large group that was to arrive the next day. In addition we and a few others who were not part of the large group were offered breakfast away from the main breakfast area so we could enjoy a more pleasant atmosphere. It is clear the owners had thought about how to keep the group and the other guests from disturbing each other and ruining each others' experience.
4) Water in the shower is extremely hot, for those who like that, and a a hair dryer is also included.
5) The room and bathroom were extremely clean. Although the tiles in the bathroom are older and have seen some wear, they are clean.
6) The room had one power adapter to convert our USA plug into a Chilean plug. This is not a power converter, just an adapter, but our computer "power brick" was able to handle Chile's 240 voltage so that is all we really needed.

Please keep in mind this is a mid-price hotel/B&B, so there are some quirks. Given the positives of the hotel none of its quirks would make me change our selection to another hotel if we returned to Colchague, but I realize other travelers might think differently. Some of the quirks include:

7) There are no air conditioners in the rooms. This was not an issue for us as we cooled our room, which was ~75F (24C) when we arrived, by opening the balcony doors and the front door for a few minutes and letting the ~55F (13C) cross breeze do the job for us.
8) The ceiling fan is a little old so it has a hum to it. This actually turned to be a blessing as explained in my next point.
9) Terra Viña is surrounded by a vineyard so you should expect noisy birds and sometimes dogs barking the distance. The rooms are not impervious to the outside sounds, although given the cement walls they seem soundproof to each other. If you are a light sleeper bring a sound machine or ear plugs.
10) Our room was sparsely decorated but practical.
11) The woodwork and finishes in the room are all hand made by a carpenter. They are focused on functionality, not necessarily perfect finishes.

To summarize, the experience was wonderful and the owners were very helpful, but this is a mid-market hotel/B&B and, just like a good mid-market wine, one is getting a good value for the price and should not be looking for all the complex elements in a top-tier wine.

Room Tip: Top floor rooms away from the lobby avoid some of the noise of people coming and going. We stayed in...

When planning our trip to Chile, Terravina was one of the few hotels that responded to our email inquiries in prompt fashion, providing useful and helpful information on all kinds of issues. And when we arrived, we were not disappointed. Terravina is a beautiful hotel in a lovely setting, bicycle-friendly, and provided the best breakfast we've had so far in Chile. Anne, the owner, and many of her staff speak English, which is helpful to the many English speaking guests. Easy walking distance to a great restaurant.. All in all, a winner.

Dear Barry, thank you very much for your comments. We are thrilled that you had a good time with us and very impressed by the fact that you actually made it over the hills to the coast on your tandem. It was a pleasure having you.

Kind regards

This hotel is in the middle of a vineyard, but still fairly close to the city. The owners are very nice people, they even drove us to three different places to find a mechanic when our car wouldn't start. It is a lovely hotel with many positive points and just a couple of drawbacks that keep it from being excellent.

The positives:
Nice and clean rooms, all with a small balcony
Situated in the middle of a vineyard, nice views, quiet at night
Great pool
Good variety for breakfast
Friendly and helpful staff
Walking distance to 2 restaurants (one close, one more of a hike)
5 minutes to the center of town and close to other vineyards
Can walk through the vineyard
Nice sitting areas outside

The negatives:
Noise isolation is terrible, you can hear your neighbors
It's slightly overpriced compared to many other nice hotels I have visited in Chile

Additional information:
I have also stayed at Hotel Santa Cruz, also overpriced but not nearly as nice
Lapostolle and Montes are my two favorite vineyards to visit
If you can get a reservation for lunch with wine pairing at Lapostolle, do it!

In a broad perspective the hotel is good. Rooms are spacious, with good light, clean and have a relatively good bathroom. The bathroom could be improved, mainly because of the ugly walls and the small and old shower. The noise isolation in the room was horrible, you could listen what your neighbors were talking.

The breakfast was spectacular, lot's of fruits, cereals, yogurts, eggs, pastries and almost everything you could expect from a five star hotel breakfast.

Everything as expected, but it's not a 5 star hotel, not even close, while the price is of a 5 star hotel.

Room Tip: choose a room on the second floor, as the noise will be less annoying.

Dear guest,

Thank you for taking your time to write a review. Your opinion is important to us.

However, we are surprised that you expected to find a five star hotel in our vineyard. We are certainly not that and consequently, our rates are far from those of a five star hotel. Just for the record you paid 160 USD for a double room with our excellent breakfast included. Hotel TerraViña is exactly as we promise on our website. No more, no less.

We are also surprised that you found you room noisy. We have inserted several layers of insulation material in the walls between the rooms but obviously if you keep your balcony doors open (as you did) you will hear noise from the outside.

Finally, the bathroom is not old since we built the hotel from the ground and opened less than 4 years ago. The showers are the best on the market. Besides, all the rooms are newly painted in order to be ready for the upcoming season.

Kind regards

Anne Sorensen

This hotel was great; the service was amazing...however they got our rooms mixed up in the beginning and we thought we were getting the suite, a little disappointed when we had to go to the regular twin bed room. Each room had a nice balcony that overlooks their vineyard. The pool area is great, gets alot of sun. Very nice lounge areas. Is within walking distance to 1-2 restaurants, but other than those, you will need a car to get into town.
Breakfast buffet was good; meat, fruit, bread, cereal, yogurt. They even were going to make special order eggs for us.
Very nice stay, great views.

This is a gem in the middle of vineyards. Inviting grounds, too bad we were there in the winter we could not really enjoy the garden, pool ect.
We had reservation for three people in one room, they did not have that in their records. They gave us a room and had it converted to three beds before we could sit down. That is efficiency.
Nice size rooms and bathrooms. Good breakfast this a good place to explore vineyards from!

I recommend that you DO NOT miss the Museum in town. We pulled in there and almost walked away when they said 5000 peso's a piece - but it was more than worth it!

My friends and I have spent a fabolous holiday in Hotel TerraVina in several days. The hotel is situated in the most beautiful winearea surrounded by the Andes, and its position is a fantastic basis for excursions. The service and the atmosphere are highly top quality and likewise the breakfast. I can therefore give this hotel and its host and hostess my best recommendations, and I really want to come back.
