“Excellent location with comfortable rooms”
Reviewed 29 December 2008

I stayed two days and one night at the Hotel Santa Cruz Plaza in October 2008 while on a wine tour in the Colchagua Valley as part of an overall tour of South America. I found it unique in design and presentations. It is part of a Museum complex (Colchagua Museum, fabulous displays!) and an ultra new Casino (Casino Colchagua, of course). The hotel is housed in an older structure but it has been modernized and everything worked, to include the shower and bathroom, the glass elevator and the high speed internet was truly high speed. The second floor foyer stained glass window added charm to the back side of the building. I stayed on the second floor and slept on a very comfortable double bed. There was a panarama view of the Santa Cruz Plaza, the hotel's namesake, from the large window and small balcony. The adjacent Colchagua Museum is a wonderful collection of everything related to the history of the area. There are also old motor cars and other modes of transportation, both indoors and outdoors. I did not eat in the restaurant but did partake of their wine samples at the bar. Excellent pours, of course. Breakfast was buffet style with lots of breads and cheeses but also everything that an American tourist would want and served in a large room as part of a tiki area between the hotel and the casino. Overall, the hotel was above average to me because of its historic surroundings and one part of a wonderful time in the area. The sleeping room was average in the overall scheme of things.

We stayed in suite 320 for three nights, March 4-7, 2008, overlooking the outdoor exhibits of the superb museum behind the hotel. This was an excellent, large room with sitting area, balconies, and full, very modern and clean bath. Very comfortable bed. Same-day laundry service even though they said it would be 24 hour return. Plenty of free parking. Excellent service by friendly staff. Evening turn-down service.

The hotel is done throughout in excellent taste in attractive colonial style even though it is only ten years old. Faces the plaza but the quietest rooms are in the back. Very attractive pool which appears semi-tropical although the Colchagua Valley is California-dry. As others have stated, the under-construction casino may affect the desireability of the building in the rear, in which our room was. For now, there is no effect.

The claimed five star staus is relative to other Chilean hotels; it's like a four star by European standards. Food in the attractive restaurant was good but not great, with service varying from good to killingly slow. Excellent breakfast buffet in a different place. The pizza restaurant was not open during our stay.

We (a group of five) went to the Colchagua valley for the vendimia--wine festival--so the Santa Cruz was a great location because all the wineries had booths in the square. We stayed in the back part of the hotel and it was great looking down on the mastodon in the museum. In fact, the museum is the real highlight of this hotel. It is an excellent museum showing the history of the area, precolumbian artifacts up to a collection of cars. We enjoyed visiting the wineries of the area and then being in the square for the weekend. The food in the hotel, or anywhere else in the town, was not good. The best food we had was at Pan Pan Vino Vino out on the highway. It is very comfortable with a big oven, and the food is excellent. We also had a good meal at Viu Manent winery. The pool at the hotel is very nice with pretty flowers all around.

My wife and I stayed here as part of a group of wine lovers from the UK on an organised wine tour of South America in late February 2008.

Similar comments to other reviewers. The only hotel in town and convenient for wineries. Clean and comfortable rooms, although ours was quite small - larger ones are available in the newer block at the rear. Casino and larger swimming pool are being built, but didn't impact outside daylight hours. Rooms at the front may be affected by events being held in the square (musical festival when we were there), but concerts ended before midnight, although people did remain for some time after. All part of the local culture! Double glazing is quite effective.

Very nice stained glass windows are passed if one uses the stairs rather than the lift.

Restaurant can be hit and miss, as other reviewers have mentioned. We were ok but other people in our group had fish which was still frozen inside! Pizza restaurant was ok (not easy to undercook a pizza!!) and no problems at buffet breakfast.

Staff were ok - but lacked the friendliness of others we met during our tour. May be due to the relative inexperience of dealing with tourists compared with the larger city hotels? Assistant in the shop hotel was the most friendly - very good selection of wines too.

Overall an above average hotel - and hopefully the catering will improve as tourism increases - smaller menu with fresh ingredients would be a good start - and possibly a new Head Chef! Good location for visiting wineries.

We chose Santa Cruz asa base to explore the Colchagua valley wine region. This is the only real hotel in town and we loved it. As we had read in previous reviews, the staff , in general, are not as friendly as our other experiences in Chile but we got what we needed in the end. One or 2 of the staff were very helpful and had some English.
Our room was on the top floor in the rear section overlooking the courtyard of the museum and was quiet with a balcony and good views.
We loved the outdoor swimming pool in tropical surrounds. Great to cool off after a day wine-tasting.
Good breakfast buffets with excellent selection of local fresh fruit, ham and cheese. Selection of cereals not so good. Other usual buffet food OK. Did not get sick from eating breakfast there.
Because of trip advisor reviews of food at the hotel, we ate dinners at the nearby Social Club and were not disappointed. Local food outside under a canopy of grapes hanging on the vines. Lunches at nearby wineries are excellent.
Our overall experience was of a relaxing stay in beautiful surroundings.
A casino extension is being built so don't know how that will change the great local atmosphere the place has now.
Visit soon before it changes.

Its very well located in the old square and overlooks the gardens in the town centre. Excellent reception and we reserved rooms overlooking the square which was good. Double glazing works and the balcony allows you to watch the action day and night.
Because of the lay-out of the place, and the fact there is appears to be only one servery, service to the outlaying seating areas is slow although they do try very hard. very good parking arrangements. The staff at breakfast were either very attentive or non existent. The museum is a must if you are interested in the history of Chile, horse drawn carriages or old motor cars.
Dinner can be inside or out. The service is confused as the staff seem not to have tables allocated so you get the menus delivered more than once. We had a bad experience with the food and one of our party got food poisoning. This can happen anywhere but after three nights here we came to the conclusion that the food was probably not cooked fresh but pre-prepared and heated as the choice was far too great and they served the whole menu virtually all day.
Also watch out for the wine tour charges. We visited Lapostelle which is billed as a great tour. $80 each later and a 45 minute tour we tasted three wines none of which appealed and the whole experience was underwhelming. I am sure there are better places and we were just unlucky.
Do go to the Santa Cruz social club, also on the square and get good food freshly cooked and a rather charming atmosphere.

  • Disliked — the dining experience.

The rooms were good to very good. The service was okay. Breakfast is buffet, and acceptable. The staff are oblivious to your presence and prefer filling in forms! You have to go over and catch them to get anything....but that is just poor training. They'll get on with what you want once you ask them! As to dinnner....and i suspect lunch....avoid like the plague! Everything had been pre-cooked earlier that day. Out of our group of four one had food poisoning. I don't want to put people off going there as it is the only "show " in town worth staying at, but just dont eat !! We found a wonderful place on the Plaza in front of the hotel (facing out hotel to the right) called the Social Club which had been in operation since 1933, and still had an original vine growing. Food and staff were brilliant!
