“Good enough for a short stay”

My wife and I spent one night here on a Wendy Wu ' Silk Road Explorer' tour of western China. It has a large lobby with a nice sitting area beside a fish pond, and there is a shop selling coffee sachets and other requisites as well as large rocks and pieces of petrified wood.
Our room was clean and had the usual hard bed, a coffee maker and an old TV with no English language channels, air con (it was comfortable enough for us, but would not be good enough in summer), and the bathroom was ok.
The breakfast was mostly cold fried eggs on cold toast, but the dinner was very good.
The hotel is quiet at night and we slept well. There are some restaurants nearby.
One of the housekeeping staff lent us an adaptor. The reception staff have very little English.

Not one of the worst not one of the best on this trip. I don't know about the $20 yuan, as I said I think there are pictures and reviews here of 2 different places. This was a large hotel and if I remember correctly in front of a very good museum. The breakfast was good compared to what we had in other hotels. No one spoke any other language but Chinese, that is why we went on an organized tour. Which turned out a bit of a disaster getting really bad with this city. We had different local guides and they got progressively worse. This company specializes in Australian tours and their expectations are very low and complaining is not in their vocabulary, so they get the worse service. If you plan a "silk road trip" use a company with people from your own country as the service and the tour vary greatly as we found out too late.

Looks fancy from outside but service and the room was average. Breakfast included but not nice at all. Just stayed overnight to visit the Wall and fort which made the night at the hotel adequate for what we wanted.

This hotel is a bit far from the center of the city, and is not very comfortable (nor unconmfortable, to be sure). In all I would say a average hotel, nothing really bad about the room but nothing really nice, either. However it is quite inexpensive (I just paid about 20 €).

When planning our China holiday we struggled to choose a hotel in Jiayuguan because of their mixed reviews, therefore we were not surprised at the GW, just disappointed. On arrival the stay started badly and didnt improve. From the taxi there were no attempts to move our luggage for us (or later move it to the room - this didnt bother me too much but was a stark contrast to the other hotels in China we stayed in). Reception was unfriendly; had trouble finding details of our booking (in a hotel that was nearly empty), made all four of us fill in a booking in sheet that seemed to give our entire life history and then checked it line by line. Also we had to pay a deposit in cash up front (larger than the cost of our expected stay). Later during the stay all meals (inc breakfast) had to be paid in cash immediately after the meal. Internet use required a Y100 deposit. Rooms were OK but very shabby and had seen much better days. As a previous reviewer has observed, there is a window between the bathroom and the rest of the room with only a net curtain to cover it (you therefore need to be good friends with your room mate!) GW is a huge hotel but it was almost deserted; there were probably three other groups staying throughout our stay. Although the hotel boasted a large number of facilities none of them seemed to be open - probably as the hotel occupancy was so low - ie travel agency (unmanned), internet facility (not working), three restaurants (western, chinese and one other) all with the same menu) etc etc. Western breakfast was esoteric but adquate. Food in the restaurants not too good. The shame is that this hotel, if tidied up and proper training given to the staff, could be so much better, but this will probably not happen until occupancy rates go up. The only positive thing I would say is that most of the staff were friendly and tried hard. Overall; avoid, try one of the hotels nearer the centre of town (although their TA reviews are no better). Or perhaps even consider missing out J altogether; we found the fort and wall a disappointment largely due to the pall of pollution that hung over the whole city (J is mostly a huge industrial complex with very high air pollution levels).

We stopped here for one night on a road trip through the Hexi Corridor. The hotel, built to look like a fort, is in a pleasant part of town. It is clean and well maintained with friendly, helpful staff. Inside the foyer is pleasant with an interesting water feature.

We had a good, clean, comfortable room with huge bed and cup of green tea delivered to room on arrival. Eventually found right dining room which was cavernous and, like the rest of the hotel, nearly empty. Menu in English, but Chinese food choice surprisingly limited although meal was ample and very good. Breakfast a rather weird meal but OK with assortment of meats and biscuits on table then eggs, chips, spring onions and toast arriving unannounced.

It claims to be 4-star, but a maximum of 2-Stars would be more appropriate. If this is 4-Star then some hotels in Beijing and Shanghai can reach 10 stars! It looks like Gansu Province has its own classification system for hotels and tourist attractions.

From the exterior the hotel looks like a big yellow castle, almost like an outdated Disneyland with an elaborare Chinese Temple on the roof.

The rooms are old fashioned and have a bland and dirty feeling. The room we got had a strong smell of Medicine, maybe because it hadn't been occupied for a long time.

During our stay, the hotel had a maximum occupancy rate of 10-20%, as we never seen any other guests (apart from the extremely drunk men coming out of the hotel restuarant at night) so the lights were usually turned-off everywhere, giving a very dark impression inside.

The lobby area was very tacky with an overload of all sorts of unnecessary landmarks inside the lobby (like a bridge over water with fish in it, another area had a zig-zag bridge etc.).

The room rate was 198 RMB via C-Trip (didn’t include Breakfast, so we didn’t have breakfast at the hotel).
