“Yangshuo Mountain Retreat - a little piece of heaven!”
Reviewed 27 April 2012

My husband and I stayed at the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat in April 2012 for 3 nights. I don't see how it could have been a better experience and it was one of my favorite parts of our trip to China.

Location: It is about a 1 hour 15 minute cab ride from the Guilin airport. The hotel arranged for cabs to pick us up and drop us off for 300 RMB each way paid directly to the driver. The drive to the retreat is so scenic. The hotel is situated a little ways away from the center of town, but is one of the reasons I loved it so much. The views of the river, the karst peaks and tranquil environment were like an oasis.

Rooms: We were in room 201A - on the 2nd floor, corner room. We had a large spacious balcony with beautiful views of the river and mountains. The a/c unit works great. I did read reviews that had concerns about the bathrooms - you just need to be aware that this is an eco-friendly hotel (e.g. no toilet paper in the toilet, always in the bucket because of their natural septic tank) and that is a very humid environment.

Rates: We were able to book their nicest room for a couple for equivialent of $75 USD per day. Paid through paypal - - very easy.

Food: My favorite meals of our entire trip were at the restaurant in the hotel! Breakfast was around $6 per person I think - it included fresh juice (either watermelon, orange or pineapple) plus either tea or coffee and then a 3 course meal. I usually choose the omelette with 2 fillings + french toast + fresh fruit (dragon fruit + watermelon + pineapple + asian pear). We had dinner every night at the hotel as well and you can either sit inside or outside facing the river. Our favorite dinner cost the quivalent of $35USD. 3 alcoholic drinks (really nice selection of beer) + pot of ginger tea for me + 2 appetizers (spring rolls were great) + gung pao chicken (my favorite dish there) and + pineapply chicken (my husbands favorite - either that or the beef dish). AND we had the crispy banana with ice cream for dessert. It was absolutely amazing and so reasonable!

Customer Service/Staff: The staff could not have been more friendly. The owners of the hotel are American and hired many people from the surrounding villages. From Angel, Bin Bin and Little Fish -- they grab a piece of your heart as soon as you walk through the door.

I wish we had spent more time here and definitely want to return some day! We had an absolutely amazing experience!

I'll include a note about excursions in my trip report.

We really enjoyed the amazing view outside the room. The restaurant is also highly recommended. The hotel is just a bit far from the town center. However, that's why you can find peace of mind.

I can't rate this place any less. All the good reviews I read before choosing Yangshou Mountain Retreat to stay at were all correct and there is little to add here that all the excellent reviews before me haven't already mentioned. The staff were exceptional - very competent and very friendly. The room was very comfortable and the food in the restaurant was excellent and good value. The only thing I can fault is that the WiFi signal was a little weak in the room.

We stayed here as family of five, so we took two rooms. This was arranged well by the hotel by putting my older boys across the hall from the rest of us. The rooms were both wonderful, great beds and our room had a balcony overlooking the front entrance hence giving us a view of the grinds and the river, which after all is the main attraction. The food was very good and the menu had some western dishes which the kids enjoyed as a respite from chinese food of varying quality on the rest of our trip.

The only downside was that the river didn't look to safe for swimming as it moved quite fast past the hotel.

As this area is truly beautiful and well worth walking or riding around I would not recommend staying anywhere but the Mountain Retreat, particularly for a family trip. The retreat is also a great place just to chill out before heading on to Honk Kong or Hanoi and the chaos of large asian cities.

We loved our stay at this hotel....the location is perfect and the hotel surroundings and views from the room/balcony are beautiful. The room was probably the best we had in all of our 24 days touring China. Staff and service is also very good. Would definitely recommend this hotel if you want a peaceful retreat.

We loved YMR. We stayed 4 nights there in April. We spent a little extra for a view of the river and it was worth it. It was so pleasant to sit on our balcony and watch the river go by, after a busy day biking or walking all over the area. The rooms are very reasonable. The staff, locals from the area, speak excellent English. The food is good, also. They gave us printed directions and a map for biking and hiking in the area. We were thrilled to be on the Yulong river and out of Yangshuo town, which is loud. (West Street reminded us of the Ocean City, Maryland, Boardwalk). And, they do give part of their profits to a local good cause.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a river view, it is worth the extra cost.

Our family (incl 2 kids ages 11 and 9) loved Yangshuo Mountain Retreat. The location right on the beautiful Yulong River is perfect for walks, bike rides, and lazy bamboo rafting. Staff are extremely friendly, helpful and caring. I love the fact that it's out of Yangshuo nestled in the karsts, and that they care about environmental and social matters (local staff, no plastic bottles). Plenty to do, rain or shine (ping pong, badminton, games, bikes, DVDs to borrow, local attractions).
