I suppose there are really no better locayions to find. What A View! When arriving by boat Yanshuo seemed so crowded and busy, but once in the Mountain Retreat it was all peace and quiet.
Nice Room, eco friendly touch. The food was good, though not excellent, but at great prices. I did miss a swimming pool a bit, an infinity pool with this view would be amazing, but maybe that wouldn't be so eco friendly ;)
The bicycling was fun, although the bikes were a bit run down and the map from the area wasn't very correct, so we got lost, but still had a nice time.

Some little points about eating at Luna, the food was good, but could be better if you claim to be a real Italian restaurant, pe the 'Melanzana alla parmegiana' wasn't tasting really fresh (actually it tasted like there was a basil pesto from a jar in it). Also the view isn't that good, sure you have the mountains, but in front of that a lot of brick-and-cement buildings. But my advice: put Luna in the scenary of the Mountain Retreat ;)

Room Tip: Take a room with a good view!

It’s been 10 years since we stayed at the eco retreat.

It was one of the best accommodation experiences we had...after traveling for 3 weeks around China.

What I remember most was the warm welcome, the peaceful atmosphere, the magical view form the bedroom and the sense of being in paradise out from crowds, pollution and noise.

A fantastic place to find peace at an excellent value!

We spent one night at Yangsho Mountain Retreat after coming over from Guilin on a Li River Cruise. The staff was wonderful before and during our stay. It was easy to make the reservation and they were very responsive by email. Perfect English with is a plus!
They arranged a taxi to pick us us from the cruise arrival area as well as tickets for the show that evening. They also arranged the Bamboo Rafting for us. The reception staff even suggested we place our dinner order ahead of time so that we can take advantage of our day and have dinner ready at 6pm before we head out to the show. We were able to maximize our stay.
They also provide maps with suggested walking tours. We didn't feel the need to hire a guide.
Sunset on the river banks was serene - the kids played and we enjoyed our cold local beer with peanuts.
The 5 of us (2 adults and 3 children) fit comfortably in the family room and we found the food served at the hotel to be delicious. Even our picky youngsters enjoyed it.

We spent four nights here in this lovely hotel located on the Yulong river. The rooms with their full length windows offer uninterrupted views of the river with the limestone karsts rising up in the background. We spent a lot of time sitting on our balcony, drinking a beer (which is provided in mini bar at same price as restaurant) just watching the continual passage of bamboo rafts carrying people down the river. While the hotel is located 10 mins out of Yangshuo, we actually never bothered even going into town as we were more than happy to enjoy the peace and quiet offered at the hotel. We hired bikes from the hotel on two of the days to explore the local area. It was not necessary to hire a guide as the hotel had very good detailed laminated directions to several locations so we could easily wander along the country paths and find our way back home again. The staff were very helpful which is best illustrated by my need to have one of my shoes repaired. They simply took care of having someone deliver it to the shoe repairer, fixed and returned without undue expense. No problem!

Room Tip: Definitely choose a room with a riverview.

This hotel is in a beautiful and serene setting. It's a little hard to find the first time unless you take a taxi there, but once there the staff are ready to help in any way possible. Their English is great, and they are so very friendly. They can arrange tours, transportation, and meals at a fair price. They have a collection of DVDs in the library from which you can borrow if you just want to stay in. Their restaurant is excellent, but they also can make great local recommendations for other fare. They rent bicycles and provide maps of the area with approximate cycling times and distances. They really go above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable. The bonus is that they are an eco-friendly hotel, so you can relax in luxury and feel really good about it.

Getting there: the easiest way is to hail a taxi in Yangshuo which should cost about 40RMB. The hotel offers a free shuttle twice a day into town, and they can also arrange airport transport (although it is cheaper to book a minibus through the travel agency for 80 RMB at the Green Lotus Hotel in town).

Room Tip: The suites are much more comfortable if you really want peace and quite; in the smaller rooms it'...

We had no idea what to expect as we left Guilin for this riverside rural retreat.
On first glance, and even when entering, we still weren't sure this was our sort of place, but we were won over completely by the warmth of the welcome we received, and the spectacular riverside setting. This is a truly beautiful spot. The surrounding terrain is breathtaking and being able to sit by the river and gaze at the beautiful green covered mountains while eating supper, was quite frankly one of the highlights of our trip.
The room is fairly spartan, though comfortable and spotlessly clean. The shower was adequate, but there was plenty of hot water. Having to put loo paper in a covered basket, because their plumbing can't cope with it was the only downside for us. However, I would recommend an upgrade of their bathroom facilities. I think this would definitely be an enhancement worth investing in.
Apart from that, dinner was average, but so sweetly served in such a beautiful setting that we didn't really mind.
Breakfast was lovely and again the service was absolutely charming.

Had we known how beautiful this place was we would have spent 1 night in Guilin and extra time here.

The mountain retreat is a calm oasis. From the minute you walk through the grounds you hear silence which is difficult to find in China.

The staff were lovely, they made us feel very welcome and sat us down to a welcome orange juice and cookies before we even checked in.

After 3.5 weeks of local cuisine (with the odd western meal) their cheeseburger was very welcome for lunch and really tasty. Also recommend the spring rolls. After check in we did nothing but sit around, read, enjoy the view and listen to the river meandering along. Enjoyed breakfast both mornings. Cheese and mushroom omelettes were really nice. French toast and fruit. Also really good coffee. For dinner I had Wiener schnitzel day 1 and Lemon Chicken day 2. After I finished I regretted not ordering the Chicken day 1 and then again day 2 it was that good.

They also make a great Gin and Tonic!

If you're Western be prepared to be waved at and occasionally photographed from the passing bamboo rafts. This is all part of the charm though.

I would highly recommend the Mountain Retreat.
