If you want to see how real Miao culture is, go to Langde Village. You can take a bus from train station to the city's bus station center. Then take a bus which Langde is the last stop (10 rmb). There you can find lots of homestays. I recommend A-Mei's. It's in the right side of the bus stop and takes 200 meters of walking. The price of accomodation is normally 30 rmb per night. You have to pay extra 30 rmb for dinner and breakfast combined. Sometimes from 9-11 am, there will be a traditional dancing performance which takes 20 rmb to see.

ShangLangDe was one of earliest Miao village opened to tourism since 1985. The pressure to turn it into a theme park was great but it was lucky to get the rare protection status from decaring the whole village as provincial level cultural relics. Tourism development and facilities were kept to the minimum - absolutely no serious pollution from the tourism industry like kara-ok shops and bars. The flow of mass tourism was diverted to the nearby mega-scale theme park Xijiang after its opening. It was able to make ShangLangDe less crowded and became a much better cultural destination for heritage lovers during non-holidys. Some families in the village provided basic accommodation. Foods were great. People were still simple, rural and most friendly, no worry of any tourism traps. There was no ticketing gate and a big entrance fee. It was not a popular theme park.

Anyway ShangLangDe was still a tour destination, touristy shows required a ticket and it was similar to other theme parks but the village/neighborhood feeling was very nice. The performing site was small and looks more like a part of the village's daily life space. It was on the ground and did not have distinctive separation from the performer/stage area to the audience section. There were many children and non of them did asking for money. Photo taking was welcome and no asking for money afterwards. Actors were more like local villagers than strangers from professional troupes. Costumes were largely the original authentic Miao textile instead of the cheap stage inventions in theme parks. Quite some young ladies were carrying their babies, sometimes breast feeding in a corner. Many ladies were doing traditional embroidery while waiting for their turn. Old ladies were chatting ... There was something relatively close to true ethnic life of the past.

Langde is one of the most authentic, less visited and less commercial of all the miao villages I've visited. I stayed with a family just above the bus station stop for only 40 yuan a night. During the day our local home owner, his wife , his father and mother all put their best miao clothing and along with most of the clan convene to the square and performed beautiful dances and songs. They charged us 20 yuan for the well worth show and I enjoyed their home made souvenirs better that at any other tourist spot. It was a pleasure spending time with these wonderful people .

The trip from Kaili to Miao Village took about one hour through windy mountain road. RMB30 each on a shared taxi. Entrance fee is RMB120 and senior above 60 yrs old half price. This include the ride from entrance to village n a ride to the view platform of whole village. Miao Village had been opened to tourism in 2008 and thus very touristic. Lots of construction of new buildings going on. No hotels here. Only guest houses priced from RMB120-300+. We stayed at Ah Wang GH for RMB120. Very basic but clean and friendly n helpful owner. Night performance of Miao cultural dance and songs at 2030hr. Priced at RMB168, 128, n 98. Miao Village worth a two days visit.

We visited Qingman Miao Village on the way to Guiyang. We were so overwhelmed by the locals' warm hospitality and got drunk at the welcoming ceremony! The food was great, too! Happy (and drunk) memories!
