“Matang, the closest Geija village from Kaili”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2013

Although most of the surroundings of Kaili are under a lot of construction(june 2013), it only takes 25 minutes by car from downtown to reach Matang. It is a very small and poor village, normally you can only see women and children and wearing normal cloths. The interesting thing is that is one of the few Geija communities which are easy to visit. Women produce batik clothing mainly in blue which are nice but not outstanding. The village can be walked in no ore than 20 minutes. If you can get that a young lady wears they ceremonial costume is really nice

“Okay landscape”

Matang is one of the easiest villages to access from Kaili, though it's fairly thin on the excitement side and looks a lot like other villages. Matang's main attraction is the fact that it's populated by a small tribe of Gejia. Local women wear white flared headgear and excel at selling batik souvenirs. I'd recommend to leave the shopping for later, and head across the hill to the neighboring village of Shilong: the path passes some pretty rock formations, and Shilong has information stands about Gejia culture. There's an easy asphalt road back to Matang, where you can catch the bus going back to Kaili.
