“Plain but adequate hotel”

The hotel is a little tired and the beds incredibly hard, but the staff are friendly and cheerful. It was disappointing to find one was charged for using the tea/coffee in the room, but at least there was a kettle available.

The hotel is very nicely situated, by the river, and handy for the town centre.

Room Tip: Ask for a river view.

What a let down, all our other hotels were of very high standard, while this was more like Fawlty Towers. The beds were brick hard, food terrible and staff were off hand. This was not what we found elsewhere.

Room Tip: The area and attractions made up for the hotel.

Our tour guide said that this is the best hotel in Chengde. I would hate to stay in the worst.

The general impression of this hotel was a hotel that had been allowed to go to seed and unusually for China the leval of staff service was poor probably because little or no training had been given. Normally in China you are each given a free plastic bottle of water as the tap water should not be drunk or used for rinsing your toothbrush. No free water here.

We ate in the hotel both nights as part of a group and the food was acceptable. However, breakfast was diabolical and definitely the worst I have ever encountered worldwide. No buffet breakfast here. Our breakfast turned out to be two greasy fried eggs and a bit of fatty bacon and a sausage. The fruit juice was heavily diluted and tasted terrible. There was also some unappetising bread on offer. We complained to our tour guide and the following day the greasy eggs were replaced by some scrambled eggs. There is an alternative Chinese breakfast room but it is extremely low grade with loads of uncleared dirty tables.

The beds in the bedrooms were rock hard even by Chinese standards. Our room lacked maintenance although we did have a nice view of the river.

Wi-fi is not available in the rooms but is available free of charge in the lobby. There were notices everywhere imploring no smoking but everyone ignored the no smoking notices.

After the meal the first night we went downstairs to the bar which is very tatty. Drinks are very expensive. Staff exceptionally poor. The bar was empty but four giggling girls were on duty. We ordered a round of beers. They brought the bottles over and amazingly just handed us a bottle opener to open them ourselves!!!

Generally in China hotel currency rates for sterling notes are quite competitive. Not here where the rate on offer was very poor and easily the worst we saw in China.

I would reiterate don't stay here. Better options must exist in Chengde.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else!

Stayed one night whilst on a 2 week China tour. The room had a tired appearance with "grey" towels.
The attitude of the staff was surly at best and at times became downright rude. I exchanged some currency during which the entire transaction took place without a word being spoken and no documents provided - money was slapped down on counter in front of me. Undeterred I went to enquire as to where the western restaurant was located - having earlier ventured into the Chinese restaurant on the second floor to be greeted by total apathy and uninterest.
The lady in reception wavered her hand in a general direction which did nothing to identify where the restaurant was or even if one existed.

Feeling dejected at this stage I sent my wife into the only room that we had not ventured into and in the gloom (very few lights were on) she managed to obtain from a single woman in there (hiding behind a counter) that yes this was the Western dining room but they had already laid the tables for next days breakfast. This surprised us as it was only 7pm!. Obviously hoping for an early night! After much persuasion we managed to get a table laid with the correct plates and cutlery and ordered a meal from the menu. At this point 2 other members of our group, seeing us in the darkened room joined us for dinner. Many of the menu items were unavailble - never did find out why this was so and food eventually arrived 20 minutes later. By now word had spread to other hotel residents that a Western restaurant did exist and food was being served so 3 german visitors sat down and ordered food - only to be told that it would be at least 45 minutes before it would be available. We had long since left before their dinner appeared. Begrudgingly more lights were now switched on.
When I asked for the bill the look I received from the waitress would have frozen hell over but amused us and the germans and much laughter and comments were exchanged.

The following breakfast continued in a similar vein with a plate of cooked food and a yoghurt being placed on the table in front of you whether or not you request it - no fruit juice, no cereal but with a large basket of toast. The mechanism of delivery for this plate was entirely random, not relating to when you arrived nor where you were seated. I enquired as to where my food was and the waitress picked up a plate that had already been placed in front of another guest and gave it tome. Unfortunately for him, he had not started to eat it !!!

The level of customer service provided by this hotel was well below the minum acceptable level - I doubt whether they even understood the phrase customer service. I have visited many hotels with business and holiday but this is easily the worst I have stayed at.

Room Tip: Choose a room in a different hotel

We had two nights in this hotel in August as part of a fairly extensive 5 week tour of China. I have to say that it was very average, nothing to write home about but nothing particularly good. The hotel had a largely Chinese business hotel feel about it, no special effort was made. It was clean, bed hard (not unusual). The position was good and certainly all of the sights were very accessible.

We were very disappointed with the charges for drinks and extras in the hotel, eating and drinking out was extremely cheap and easy, a definite rip off by the hotel.

I am not sure if there is anywhere better in the town, we were told not. It is fine if you do not expect too much. Clean and tidy would sum it up.

Stayed in this hotel for one night. We were really impressed with the lobby and thought that it meant that the hotel would offer greater comfort that we were really afforded. The room was clean but very basic and the air conditioning was not working. They did have an array of extras available in your room to purchase including a bra and a reusable toilet seat cover! The bed was extremely hard - so much so that we had to check whether they had put a mattress on the box or not - which they had! The room was large and had a view overlooking the river. Fortunately we were only there one night!

On a tour through China we stayed for 1 night in this hotel. The outside and the lobby with a big chandelier(photo 1) are rather impressive. The location is good; concerning transport, shops and restaurants; they are all nearby. Check-in was done in no time,no deposit required. The room(photo 2&3),not small & not big,had a combined smell: cigarets, old carpets and damp walls. The humid stains on the wallpaper were there to prove it. A/C in the room was available and working. The bed felt really hard to our standards, sheets and towels seemed clean. The safe in the room can be used at no charge. The bathroom was just ok.The rates in the lobby-bar(photo 4) are quite high but the bier and the glasses are chilled, the free wi-fi connection in this place worked nice.Breakfast is served separately: Chinese and Continental in different halls on different floors,so we found ourselfs the only two people sitting in the(continental) place and the food was served on the table by the waitress, the coffee tasted similar to instant-coffee.Check-out was finished in a flash.
