“You can give it a miss”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

Based on reviews and photographs in my guide book we decided that this place was worth a visit. We were a bit disappointed as we found grottoes in a very sorry state all covered with thick layer of dust /dirt. Not surprising as Luoyang is a very dirty city covered with smog.
Generally in hindsight I would have avoided going to Luoyang and chose to see something else in China. Same can be said about Shaolin Temple which we visited afterwards.

“Stay for the night lights! ”
Reviewed 27 June 2014 via mobile

This place is simply amazing. Seeing all those Buddha's carved into the caves is so cool. One cave has 10,000 Buddha's in it! We were staying in Luiyang at the YiJia international hostel on Zhong Zhou East Rd and caught the #53 bus (¥1 & ~40mins) to the caves. Entrance cost ¥120 which gave you access to the East Caves, West Caves, a temple and Bai Juyi's Tomb. The East caves are the best but when you go across the river to the west caves the view back onto the east caves is awesome! The temple is stock standard for temples in China and I didn't go to the grave. Give yourself at least 2 hrs to explore the caves. We hired an English speaking guide for the East caves (¥100) as there are no English audio guide. He was pretty good and spoke good English. Make sure you stay for night as the caves lit up at night are amazing! If you have to choose between going during the day or night I would choose night.

“Spectacular”

Well worth the day trip from xi an. It is located only 5 min cab ride from the train station. It is a marvel in itself even if without a guide to explain. Recommended to take the boat ride down the river back to the entrance.

The Longmen Grottoes are located in the south of Luoyang City. They are between Mount Xiang and Mount Longmen and face Yi River.
There are over 2,300 holes and niches, 2,800 steles, 40 dagobas, 1,300 caves and 100,000 statues.
