Owner description: This historic museum traces the journey of the civil rights advocates of the 1950s and 60s, who changed the course of American history. The struggle for equality for Black Americans is chronicled here, from the Jim Crow laws in the 1800s to the freedom rides, sit-ins and demonstrations of the 1960s.

“Thought Provoking Exhibits; Extremely Well Curated”
Reviewed 1 May 2014

This is an exceptional museum. It feels approachable for lots of different ages and levels of interest. The curators obviously put a lot of thought into the layout, as one section flows very nicely to the next. The written material comes alive from the audio and visual components all working together. Further, the content doesn't feel sanitized. One word of caution - do not try and use a cellphone in the museum. The guards are serious about this and you will be reprimanded.

“Well worth the visit!”
Reviewed 29 April 2014

I visited this place after I visited the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery. I was not as emotionally moved as I was by this museum as I was by the Museum in Montgomery, but that does not take away form the power of this museum in any way. The details of this place leaves no stone un-turned. You really see the truth of what racism and discrimination did to our great nation and the damage it caused.

“Well worth a visit!”
Reviewed 26 April 2014

The institute was a modern representation of not only the Civil Rights Movement, but the history prior to it and after. This is a must-see when you're in Birmingham.

“Found this to be interesting”

Its worth your time but is not in the same class as the new museum in Memphis. The focus of this museum is Birmingham and what took place there.

“Very Powerful”
Reviewed 25 April 2014

The tour starts with a short film and then opens into exhibits of lunch counters, schools, churches, buses, etc. where the visitor is immersed in the struggle for Civil Rights. Very moving. The KKK robe gave me chills.
