Ruffner Mountain can be accessed from the Birmingham side, which has the Nature Center, or the Irondale side, on Ruffner Road across the street from Ruffner ball park.
They are currently working on a new nature center, so there is a lot of construction mess, but it is still open! It is free, though donations are accepted. I highly recommend hiking as many of the trails as possible. I usually do the quarry trail and 5 mile trail. The quarry and overlooks are amazing. There is also a new Wetlands area which can be driven to, or hiked to by a very challenging trail. I think this place will be a magnificent attraction once the Nature Center is complete!

I hiked the Marian Harnach Nature Trail which was okay but nothing special. The best thing here are the beautiful owls caged outside and the turtles and snakes located in the visitor's center. Another good thing is that it was free. Tip: Bring plenty of bug spray and watch your step because there are many branches and other obstacles on the trail. In addition, follow the directions to Ruffner Mountain from their website. This is not the best part of town. You don't want to get lost here. I visited Ruffner Mountain in April 2007.
