The history of birmingham is important to understanding the south. While I am super happy we have progressed as a city and country it helps me appreciate where we are today by looking at the past. This house is a great example of how far we have come!

I had no idea this was here until I saw a high rating for Arlington Antebellum Home in the AAA TourBook. Overall, the home and property were a pleasant surprise, but I’m torn because the grounds were like an oasis in a part of the city that has seen much better days. I really hope a lot of people visit here because it is one of a few remaining structures from the Elyton period (the town prior to annexation), and I don’t believe there are any other big antebellum houses left in Birmingham. You can have a complete visit in an hour, give or take.

Here are my notes for your consideration:
(1) I visited shortly after opening on a Tuesday morning. Plenty of parking. Admission is only $3 (less with AAA). The office staff was very nice.
(2) The drive down 1st Avenue (becomes Cotton Ave) from downtown made me a little sad. Let’s just say it’s not “scenic” in the way one would prefer.
(3) The Arlington property is meticulously manicured; like an oasis in this part of the city. You’ll feel good upon arriving.
(4) There didn’t seem to be a tour, but I was happy to stroll around at my leisure. I was the only visitor the whole time I was on the property.
(5) Get the brochure and read it while you walk through the home. The descriptions of the property’s history and the furnishings in each room are thorough and very informative.
(6) There are seven rooms total: three down, four up. In the Mudd Sitting Room, small parts of the wall and floor have been removed so you can see the construction details. That is cool. The upstairs bedrooms are noteworthy because of the wide variation in furnishings, which is explained very well in the brochure.
(7) Take a quick look inside the kitchen (separate, small structure), and be sure to stroll the grounds. I wish I had a yard like that.

I wanted to see a plantation while in Birmingham. Arlington was built in the 1840s and is within the city limits of Birmingham. I was surprised to see there was a hot dog stand rated higher in "things to see" than this in Trip Advisor. We enjoyed our visit here and the tour by the "southern belle" tour guide.

Arlington is a ca. 1840's greek revival style house. It is well maintained and cared for. Furnishings are not origional but are of the period. There were some "modern conviences" added when the house was refurbished in the 1920's. We enjoyed the visit but felt that thare ciould be a bit more explanation of life pre Civil War on Birmingham.
