If you are visiting Birmingham, a brief stop (60-90 minute) at Vulcan Park & Museum is well worth it. In the past 10 years, the city has completely refurbished the park and built a nice museum. As such, visitors have an opportunity to learn about the city of Birmingham and the importance that the iron mining and steel industries played in the city's development for well over a century.
I found the museum to be very well done. Its is not a large facility, but certainly provides an excellent overview of Birmingham's history, economic development and civil rights struggles since the end of the American Civil War. The displays and videos were quite informative.
The city has also completely restored the Vulcan statue and pedestal. It is well worth a visit to the top observation deck as the views of Birmingham and surrounding areas are spectacular. We caught it on a very clear day right at sunset. It was beautiful, and I highly recommend it!
Vulcan Park and Museum is a family friendly attraction, and is inexpensive. If your travels bring you to Birmingham, I suggest a visit to the "Iron Man" of Alabama!
