On the way to Key West, FL via Southwest airlines out of the Birmingham, AL airport, we decided on this grim place due to price, as did others. Although it was August, it seemed like May Day with plenty of red flags flying. Indeed, like the Knight's Inn chain, the motel was a takeover of a defunct Holiday or Day's Inn, complete with a decaying and closed restaurant/lounge, and sad, albeit functional swimming pool. One could imagine the ghosts of a more well-heeled clientele en route to various destinations floating among the present poor souls relegated to living several to a room, or, I would imagine, that would suffer homelessness. Then there's the room, where one is greeted by a great swath of grime from the doorway, succeeded by stains of unknown origin completing an alarming circuit around the battered furniture. During a fitful attempt at sleep, the air conditioner put out a pitiful stream of coolish air, proportional only to the amount of humidity it released. Thus exhausted in the A.M., a reviving shower was denied by a completely dysfunctional faucet, which I took to be a dummy screwed to the shower wall. Hey, it's close to the Airport, and you can get a great fast-food ham sandwich at the nearby Hardee's, complemented by a fine beverage at the gas station!
