When we arrived in Jiuzhaigou, we didn't know anything about Huanglong, other than that it was the name of the airport. As it turns out, it is also an amazing natural park near the airport, well worth a visit to anyone in Jiuzhaigou!

I would highly recommend booking your departing flight in the evening, that way you can spend the day here, and then go to the airport afterwards (I think the park closed at 5 or 6?). The airport was 1 hour from Huanglong, Huanglong was about 2.5-3 hours from Jiuzhaigou town area.

We arranged a driver for the whole journey for 400CNY (Our hotel in Jiuzhaigou at 9am - arrived Huanglong at 11ish, departed at 5ish - Airport by 6pm for a 9pm flight). I also would reccommend doing this, especially if you're travelling in a group of 4. We were just 2 people, but if there are 4 you can split the costs even more! Also, the drive between Juzhaigou-Huanglong is an experience in itself! Truly amazing scenery.

There is a cable car at the park that you can take up to the top. Note that the highest part of the park is 3600m, and some people do experience altitude issues. We are fairly fit people, but we felt a bit slow and headachy, so decided to take the cable car up (it takes you most of the way) and then walk the rest and walk back down. No shame in taking this option!

Overall, I think you're crazy not to visit Huanglong if you're in Jiuzhaigou. Jiuzhaigou is so hard to get to by plane or bus, so don't waste the opportunity and just go!

My family of 4 visited on 22 May, leaving our hotel in JZG at 6.30 am and arriving at the park entrance about 9.15 am. To reach Huan Long, our mini-van had to ascend and descend stretches of mountain roads, with a beautiful landscape of morning sun, mist on some roads, small herds of black-coloured cows and greenery from the surrounding mountains. On the way there, when we passed Xuebaojing (4007m above sea level), it was misty but cleared up on the return journey.

As we arrived early, there was no crowd (the tour buses started arriving in the late morning/early afternoon). We paid RMB 280 per person (admission and one-way cableway) and proceeded to the cableway station (situated further away from the admission tkt area) for the ride up. We proceeded to walk the rest of the way (on boardwalk) to the Five Color Pool, after alighting from the cableway station. Along the way, we saw oxygen stations (mostly closed, likely because it was early?). It was a cool and serene stroll with no crowd, with plenty of beautiful white/pinkish flowers blooming from the trees on the mountain side. We did not experience any altitude sickness likely due to our 3-day stay in JZG before visiting Huanlong.

Most of the pools were empty of water except for the Five Color Pool, which was beautiful in various shades of blue. This area is a turning point, as it would be mostly downhill steps all the way down to park exit. We spent closed to 4 hours in the park before our driver picked us up for our onward journey to Songpan, where we stayed a night before returning to Chengdu.

(1) Do schedule your visit to after Jul (the rain season) as there is hardly any water in the lower pools.
(2) Take the cableway up and walk down as there are many many steps to climb before reaching the Five Color Pool area.

We only had the morning to explore this valley, but managed to do it all in 3 hours.
Purchased tickets, caught a bus, got on a cable car, then walked for an hour before finally reaching the pools at the top of the valley.
These were stunning colours of different blues due to the minerals in the water.
Further down were waterfalls running over yellow/brown rocks - hence the name.
The walking was more difficult due to the fact we were at an altitude of over 3000meters, but it was worthwhile. Also due to the time of the season it wasn't too busy.

We took the cable car up. From there it's a pretty easy one hour walk to the top of the valley. The valley is at 3,500m and you'll probably feel the altitude. Steady walking and you should be fine. Many people were wasting money on oxygen and so called 'medicine'. You can't acclimatise within the day, regardless of walking up or not! The cable car was 80RMB each to the top.

The scenery is simply amazing. Probably not unique in the world but in all my travels I've never seen anything like it. The blues and yellows and turquoise of the water looks great. There's so many pools and many waterfalls.

The walk back down took a bit over two hours.
