We (family of four) stayed at the Linden Centre for two nights in April. The property itself has some charcter but this is where it ends, I'm afraid. First of all, there is a very limited menu and breakfast is only bread and jam with eggs. Also, dinner ENDS at 8pm!
Secondly, it is not a place where you can stay with kids as everyone seems extremely uptight about noise levels. In fact, we got a compalint from people downstairs at 9:45pm that we were making too much noise and they were unable to sleep! Would have been ok if we were, but we were simply talking. The walls are paper thin and floor creaks very loudly at each step. Shower changes temperature every few seconds. This guesthouse is also not exactly cheap.
Save your money and stay in Dali new town with a trip to Xizhou.

The Linden Centre is proud to be one of the most family-friendly hotels in China. We have three signs in our whole complex (nearly an acre footprint) that ask our guests to be as quiet as possible. This is because we have absolutely no 'white noise'- no cars, planes, factories. We are surrounded by rice fields and mountains. Our building is a national relic, not a newly-constructed copy. We worked so hard to push through the changes and incorporate the comforts that have made us, clearly, China's only successful model of hospitality in a protected complex. Newly built 'old' complexes like those throughout China faced no construction nor design restrictions. Our walls are brick and covered by plaster and are more than 10 inches thick- not paper thin. We apologize that we had to ask your children to quiet down at 9:45 in the evening. This was out of respect for our other guests. We defend our action and promise all future guests that we will ensure quiet and respect their space.
Our breakfast offers eggs, pancakes, bacon, our own homemade breads, muffins, pastries, waffles, Chinese selections, unlimited coffee, teas and juices. We are not clear how you did not see this but want all to know that our offerings are varied and surprisingly abundant for an isolated village. If guests want cement walls and more breakfast choices, clearly 5-star hotels in China's cities offer a great option. Our guests are here because of the history and culture, and understand that our efforts to maintain the quiet are out of respect for all our guests.

I spent a long weekend at the Linden Center visiting my daughter who spends 4 months in XiZhou.
The Linden Center is bliss in a serene surrounding. Go there! Nothing better than to sit in the yard or terrace with a pot of tea.

The compound is very beautifully renovated and run by the
very friendly Linden family with a great staff of friendly people.

Absolutely enjoyable, and the 5 stars given by everyone are well deserved!

Thank you for your review. We have tried so hard to create serenity within the walls of our old complex. In China, with its large and demanding domestic tourism market, serenity is illusive and thus is so often artificially contrived in theme park-style hotels and rebuilt 'ancient cities'. We are honored to be the protectors of some of Southwest China's leading historical structures. We are increasingly presented with opportunities from provincial and prefectural governments nationwide to take over old buildings throughout China and replicate our model. However, our final decision on each project comes down to two things: 1. our ability to seamlessly and sustainably interact with the local villagers, and 2. each project's potential to embrace serenity, to provide our guests with an opportunity to repose in China's timeless elegance and charm.
The English literary critic, Cyril Connolly, said it best: "Like water, we are truest to our nature in repose." Come embrace serenity again within China's borders of flux. Here still exists a timeless elegance and charm that provides a foundation for peace and self discovery!

The Linden Centre is a fabulous hotel in the most perfect setting, surrounded by fields and mountains. We had a wonderfully relaxing couple of days here. The interior is beautifully restored, the service is excellent and the food is reasonably priced and high quality. They were really welcoming to our children and very keen to help plan activities. Worth being aware however that the hotel is quite far out of Dali, the transport to Dali arranged by the hotel is not cheap and it takes an hour to get to the airport.

While the Linden Centre is located 10 miles north of Dali, we purposely selected the village of Xizhou for our projects because it is one of the only living villages in which one can still experience traditional Bai culture. Our location is our strength. Xizhou has over 110 protected buildings, all within 5-10 minute walk of our Centre. This is one of the most pristine examples of pre-revolutionary architecture still in existence. And, it is made all the more attractive by the fact that our villagers, our friends, still proudly inhabit these structures. Unlike Dali, with its theme-park atmosphere and dwindling indigenous population, Xizhou is alive and thriving, and most importantly real!

This hotel is situated in the small town of Xizhou down narrow streets and close to the market. The hotel has well appointed rooms, very comfortable and has a very peaceful feel about it. The good was good and there was also a small bar.

Room Tip: If you don't want to climb stairs to the first floor, ask for a ground floor room.

Looking around while sitting on the terrace is breath-taking. The Linden Centre is surrounded on three sides by green garlic fields. Waking up you can smell it after a good rest on the wonderfully soft beds. The Linden Centre was a compound owned by a wealthy Chinese family. The architecture has been restored wonderfully yet you can still get a glimpse at the original decoration. The staff is lovely and your stay made even better by the wonderful Linden family which makes sure to take care of your every need. The food is made from local ingredients and prepared just a few feet away from the dining room with glass ceiling panels taking advantage of Xizhou's blue skies.

Room Tip: Closer to the wonderful terrace is better.

It was extremely relaxing to be out in the amazing weather with clean air which was a great relief from the pollution back in Shanghai. Being able to see the blue sky during the day and shining stars at night were some of the highlights of this trip. If you are lucky, you may see a shooting star or two on some nights. Another highlight would be the food at the Linden Centre and outside in the village square. The facilities in the centre are also amazing. There is a large library with an extensive collection of books from fiction to the making of tea. The gym is well equipped and for some scenery while exercising, there are bikes just to make sure that wish is fulfilled. The staff is friendly and it is a extremely positive area to call home. The Linden Centre is not exactly a hotel or a mansion home, it is home away from home. There are many things to do during a stay in Xizhou from listening to the music to going to Zhoucheng to learn how to make a basic textile. Any amount of time spend in the Linden Centre is not enough, I wish I could have prolonged my stay but like all adventures, it eventually came to an end.

Room Tip: Honestly, all of the rooms are wonderful. But if you bring small children it is best to stay on the...

We remember your family fondly and thank you for your kind remarks. Among the many compliments, we would like to point out the unique role our library plays at the Centre. We are proud to have one of SW China's largest collections of English language books on Asia. Having been a graduate student at Stanford, Johns Hopkins and the University of Illinois, I have been able to build an invaluable collection of resources on the region. These books are available to all our guests. In addition to the non-fiction books on the arts, textiles and cultural traditions of the area, we have hundreds of novels, including many best-sellers and classics. The library encourages our guests to slow down, sneak away on our terrace with a coffee and story, and intellectually explore the lands in which they travel. This type of resource is unparalleled in China. We are so happy that you found it to be of interest. Hope to see you again!

During my stay at the Linden Centre, the staff were amazingly hospitable and friendly. The beds are comfortable, food is local and made up of the freshest ingredients, and the receptionists are very helpful and whatnot. The location is quite convenient, for it is merely a five minute walk to the downtown area of this small town, where it is abundant of restaurants and small stores selling tie-dyes that are aboriginal to this province of China. The compound itself has free and fast internet access in all three of its courtyards, including the terrace outside. The terrace provides a magnificent panoramic view of the mountains surrounding Xizhou, the spectacle stretching beyond the horizon. Above it all, there is an area designated for smokers outside so that the guests do not have to be disturbed by smoke.

We thank you for all your comments! The last one, regarding smoking, is of particular importance. While we do offer a small smoking terrace in the outdoor fourth courtyard, we do not allow smoking in the rooms nor in any of the common indoor areas. In a place like China, where the majority of men smoke, this is not a smart business decision. However, we believe that the type of guest who wants to be in a historic complex can handle the smoking-ban. We stand by this ban to ensure that comfort of our guests and the protection of our nationally protected structure. Many of our guests are escaping the skies of Beijing, Shanghai and other urban areas. The last thing these guests want is a smoking room with China's ubiquitous stained/burned carpets. Even the government, who proudly visit our complexes, respect our smoking ban. For non-smokers, this is truly an oasis in China! Thanks again!
