Rented a taxi to go there (400RMB for the return trip, organized by my hotel), and in merely 2 hrs we made it up to the mountain park.

I seemed to be the only visitor (off season) only when I came down, I met two other people. It's a bit exhausting to climb up to the peak, if one is used to going uphill in 2000+ meters above seelevel, but it was definitely worth if, great views from the top! And along the way, one can visit quite a few temples... The official path is well kept and one is climbing stairs most of the times. I can imagine that during the holidays, it is rather touristy there, a bit irritating were the loudspeakers on the lower part of the mountain, playing music...

Take something to drink and start early as there is much to see and many stone stairs to climb. I found the blending of Buddhist and Taoist icons - art fascinating. Using my pocket guide I had an interesting talk with some Taoist monks.

If you are good enough in Chinese to travel out of the main tourist sights, or just adventurous enough, this mountain and the village at the bottom of it (Weishan) will be a nice addition to your trip. Most of the temples give a very rustic impression, and although a few have been renovated the most interesting one is still in its original condition for now (you will recognise it by a square kiosk inside a pond with a fresco). Only difficult part: the trip between Weishan and Weibaoshan, uncomfortable in the little transports available. But it is worth it, and the 60 RMB of the ticket are better spent here than in most other Chinese sights.
Be careful though, it is very difficult to buy food on the mountain, and you should buy water at the first shop you see otherwise you will be in a serious state of dehydration mid-way.
