“Good for 1-2 nights stay”
Reviewed 2 May 2013

Huge foyer filled with potted flowers/plants. There are no roll-on bed or triple room in hotel, so three of us were given a family room (two adjoining rooms with total four big bed but one master toilet). Rooms & toilet are clean with amenities provided.

TV programs are mostly Chinese except for 1-2 channels on English shows. Breakfast spread is not too bad compared to most local hotels.

Dali ancient town (Dali Gucheng) is about 20mins walk along the main road from Hotel. Streets are well-lit & saw police car patrolling on our way to/fro hotel plus shops along the street ... so walking at night is quite safe.

Overall, good for short stayers.

Room Tip: Mountain-view rooms are quieter & scenic

Modern hotel, nice rooms & bathroom (toilet paper seems to be rationed!), good bath & shower. TV has 20 channels but all Chinese - good if you can understand it? Good comfortable King size bed
Evening meal was tasteless - wouldn't recommend it!
Food is dubious at breakfast as it is buffet style and could have been standing around or reused. wide selection of food but only eggs, bread & cakes for western tastes. When getting a hot noodle dish the noodles were not heated in hot water or broth but just served cold and some a small amount of hot water or broth added to the dish - unlike any other hotel where I have had noodles in China. When I got to my table the dish was cold!
Catering needs to be sorted out as this lets down a nice hotel.

Arrived from a very early flight, in the pouring rain... so the first impression was hard to make. BUT, the staff had graciously prepared our room for an early check in. When the rain stopped, we saw a gorgeous lake view. The room has a comfortable king bed, but all the other furniture seems out of the late 70's...not bad, just not modernized. There is a flat screen tv, with English stations, but some hilarious Chinese game shows. The bath is fine, with tub, and amenities, like shampoo and hairdryer are here. Looking now at the sun setting on the hills beyond the lake.. lovely, and about a 15 minute walk to the old city... down a busy street. Will wait to see what breakfast is like! BTW, the spa here is triple what you would pay in town. Great foot back massage for 50RMB next door to Bakery 88.

Room Tip: get a lake view for sure

Stayed in June 2012 (so this is a little late) as part of a Wendy Wu tour. Had read some very disappointing reviews about this hotel, especially the breakfast, so not looking forward to it. However, the management had apparently changed and it seemed that it was in the process of changing its name to the Asia Star Garden Hotel (yes, it is the same place). Very attractive foyer and lounge. The room we had, facing the mountain, was quiet, clean, well appointed and with great views, obviously of the mountain but could also see a bit of the lake and even the Three Pagodas (with care not to fall out the 6th floor window). Breakfast was great! Plenty of choice, even wholemeal toast! Staff were polite and professional. The location was what we were expecting, not central but easy enough to walk in and out of the old city.

Room Tip: It seems that the mountain view rooms are quieter than the lake view rooms.

Our room was clean and comfortable. We had a view of the lake and the main road. You can hear the traffic but it's bearable. Breakfast was a disappointing but adequate. The hotel is within walking distance of the south gate but there is also a free shuttle bus that can take you into the old city. If you are staying for a night or two, this hotel is fine.

We stayed here on a tour of Yunnan province. It was by far the best hotel of the tour.

Rooms: All of those we (a group of 5) stayed in were clean with good amenities and space compared to everywhere else the company put us up on our tour. The shampoos and soaps and other extras of the room (like a clothes line for drying) were all good. Linens were clean. The room with a view of the mountain was wonderful to wake up in, those on the other side found their rooms a little noisy, with the parking lot below.

Breakfast: The coffee was watery, some of the options were so-so (how long had they been sitting out?), but there were MANY options (both Chinese and Western), so I think we all found plenty to eat that was fine.

General atmosphere: Very grand and spacious. A nice, huge lobby. There never seemed to be many people hanging out in it though, although it looked comfy.

Location: If I wasn't on a tour, I'd find somewhere else to stay due to the location. The location was fine, with our limited and scheduled time in Dali. Not far from the ancient town area by cab. We all wish we'd had more time in Dali though, to explore the lake and the mountains. There are probably hotels with better access to both. The foreigner street and shopping areas of the ancient town would also, certainly, be more lively and give you things to do right outside your door. I'd probably choose somewhere by the lake though.

So, if you find out your tour is taking you here, look at this as the highlight of the 3-star hotels they are likely to bring you to. If you are traveling on your own, think about what you like (lakes? mountains? nightlife?) and find somewhere else close to those things.

Room Tip: Face the mountain side! (not the parking lot)

Well located, luxureous hotel at a great price. Would stay here again.
Nice rooms with all thinkable conveniences + great lounge/reception (with very good and cheap espresso).
From 7 pm a shuttle bus brings you every half hour to the center of the old town, which is not yet as spoiled as Lijiang.
