“One of the best places weve stayed in China”
Reviewed 20 November 2011

There are so many things i liked about Jim's Tibetan Hotel...where to start. First the location is great near the old town but away from the hubbub and in Yunnan which is my favorite province in china. The inner courtyard is nicely planted and the rooms comfortable and cheap, but the best is the roof top patio with a panoramic view of the Himalaya "foothills", Dali and Lake Erhai. We were there in the off season so had the place to ourselves. The food is fresh, well prepared and crazy cheap. We had some of our best meals in china there (try the local specialties!).
What sets Jim's apart from may of the places we've stayed in china is the Service. Jim is friendly accommodating and very helpful. He doesn't try to sell you a "bill of goods" like so many places in China. He planned several day trips that were fabulous. All of his staff go out of their way to make your stay comfortable. If you're there and need to get somewhere, ask for Mr. Wu , he is the best driver we have ever had in China. I wholeheartedly recommend Jim's

My 3 friends and I stayed at Jim's for 4 nights and had the best time. Jim's Hotel is very very comfortable and clean. The view every evening from the roof top bar and garden was the best view I have had in China. The rooms are very clean and new. The food at the hotel was just first class with soo many choices and such good value. Jim's fantastic English was very usefull in helping us get where we wanted and find the things we needed. His driver took us all over the area and then drove us back to Kunming. Our stay at his hotel was one of the best experiences I have had in China.

Room Tip: HIgher floor is better for the view.

Jim's Tibetan Hotel is run by Jim, a relaxed Tibetan guy with his staff, among which the charming Pingguo (Anna). The design of the hotel is excellent, with the rooms sporting beautiful Tibetan furniture, curtains and mural paintings. The hotel offers a big breakfast and an extensive menu with Chinese, Tibetan and Western food that the staff can whip up. The staff is incredibly helpful and Anna and Jim speak good English. There's free Internet on a few PCs and you can rent sturdy bikes or book organised tours. The hotel is 10 minutes walking from the South Gate of the city walls in a peaceful neighbourhood.

We are looking back on a wonderful stay at Jim's Tibetan Hotel. The atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed. We liked the way the hotel was decorated a lot. Both the garden and the restaurant/bar at the topfloor of the hotel were favorite places for us. The rooms are very practical for families. Both the owner and the staff are friendly, helpful and made our stay in Dali a great memory. If you look at the price/quality balance, this hotel is excellent. We can highly recommend staying more than a few days at Jim's Tibetan Hotel.

We spent 2 nights in Jim' Tibetan Hotel.
We liked the atmosphere, the garden for the kids and the quietness of the hotel.
We also appreciated the restaurant (tibetan and western food) and the smiles of the staff.

Totally adapted to a family with children.
Our rooms were spacious and provided a separate small room with another bed (very convenient for small children).

We booked a standard twin. We actually got a two room suite: a good size twin and a communicating smaller one-bed room, plus a good size, well appointed bathroom.

Facilities: decorated in Tibetan style. There is a nice (albeit small) courtyard. A roof area with a couple of tables and a small bar where one can enjoy a cold beer in the evening. WiFi was weak but there are a couple of internet-able public PCs.

Location excellent: outside the old city walls on a quiet street, but only 5 minutes walk away from all the action.

Good, friendly service: Jim (the owner, speaking excellent English) is only sometimes around, as he also owns a guesthouse/cafe within the city walls. There is, however, a young but very capable English-speaking manager who always seems to be around and is very helpful. The hotel will arrange transportation to/from airport and railway station. It has a couple of comfortable cars with drivers who provide tours of the neighbouring villages, markets and attractions.

Breakfast (included in the price) is good: pancakes, home-made buns, cereals, butter, jam, fruits, eggs. The hotel can also serve lunch and dinner, which are supposed to be Tibetan-style (Jim the very friendly owner appears to be Tibetan). We had dinner which was tasty (soup, yak stew, other yak meat dishes, butter tea). I would not vouch how authentically Tibetan this is (I think that some of the vegetables used in the stew do not actually grow in Tibet and I'm pretty sure the butter tea should be salty, not sweet!), but the illusion is there and it works...

All-in-all, a good experience, good value for the money, whole-heartedly recommended.
