We stayed here for 3 nights in the farmyard room. The hotel has a nice situation surrounded on one side by a vegetable garden. Shuehe Ancient Town is definitely more appealing than Lijiang, which is overrun by tourists and tourist shops. The staff are all very welcoming, especially MiaoMiao and Joseph. Be sure to eat the Bai family dinner prepared by the hotel chef. You can ask for the type of food you like (e.g., vegetables, mushrooms, or meat) and the chef will prepare the meal especially for you. You have to order one day in advance--as the food is prepared fresh. We definitely recommend eating at least one dinner at the hotel. The room was nice and clean, the only thing I would note is that the bathroom is very dark, especially in the shower area. One can not really see to groom oneself. Be sure also to check out the library, especially the old National Geographic articles by Joseph Rock on his Yunnan expedition. A wonderful place to spend several days.

Dear Worldtravelor09, we’re so glad you enjoyed the oft-mentioned Bivou Yunnan Farmhouse dinner – and Aunty Cun is blushing now because you called her a “hotel chef”! :) The Bivou’s signature Bai minority dinner is indeed prepared fresh on demand, using ingredients you can find in our local markets and farms, varying in different seasons, or even from our own gardens, by the wonderful Bai and Yi minority ladies who work in our hotel (aren't we lucky!). They haven't received any special culinary training before, but as is typical of many of the minority cultures here, take a great sense of pride in their abilities in the kitchen as well as are frequently lauded for "cooking with their hearts" whether for village feasts or guests from afar such as yourself. The Bivou takes its role in promoting local culture very seriously, and we do want to share with our guests such Insider’s “tastes” of Yunnan.

Thank you so much for your suggestions regarding the Farm Yard Rooms. The bathrooms for these 4 rooms in our hotel are indeed rather unique and more dimly lit than some other room types that we have. This is an intentional design element due to fact that the bathrooms here are fully open on one side to the lush interior garden, but privacy is always maintained through the use of one-way mirrored glass so as to allow guests to enjoy the garden even while taking a shower! We will however explore further how we can make these work for the ultimate Bivou experience and hope to see you back again soon to try out the other rooms too!

We came to Lijiang in the rainy season which wasn't ideal but the stay at the Bivou made up for that. The whole staff are incredibly welcoming - there is nothing they would not do for you. the rooms are tastefully refurbished and spotlessly clean, the food for breakfast is delicious and all home made and the help given to organize trips is fantastic. Most of all it is a peaceful haven away from the crowds in the beautiful town of Shuhe. I can't wait to go back.

Dear David W, thank you for your kind review about our hotel and staff! We are glad that you enjoy our homemade breakfast specially designed by our in-house team and lovingly put together by our local cooks, be it jams, granola or the breakfast-cake-of-the-day.

As for the weather, part of the excitement of traveling is the sheer unpredictability of it, and unfortunately, that does mean that the weather sometimes isn’t in a particularly cooperative mood, even though the slightly wet weather does bring with it its treasure of wild mushrooms, lush green meadows and endless fields of wild flowers. If you do come back, however, could we suggest a different season this time, perhaps between the months of October to April – which is traditionally the “dry season” of Lijiang, with clear blue skies – perfect for exploring mountain trails, cycling out to the rustic villages that surround the Bivou and even going kayaking on the nearby alpine lake. Yes, do come back again, and we’ll take you on some different Bivou adventures this time!

Service is better than any 5 star hotel groups. The staffs were very hospitable and approachable. Food was very good and may be one of the best western food you can find in Lijiang, if not used to the Chinese food there. Rooms are clean and well kept. Design of the house is beautiful and homely, accompanied by soothing jazz music. We will be back!

Dear avaaaan, Wow! Thank you so much for the great compliment! Our team does pride ourselves on our personalized service – but what is most important to us that we try to cultivate amongst our team here is not just the sort of service that regular 5-star hotels put in place through training manuals so that they have a team of smiling and polite staff, but rather, a deeper kind of connection with our guests so that we can better help you to create the kind of unforgettable travel experience that you deserve as a guest of our hotel and as a visitor to Lijiang. It definitely takes a bit more work, but for us, it’s definitely worth it whenever our guests walk away satisfied and hungry for more Bivou experiences. We hope to see you again!

There are many hidden streets, interesting shops, kind and sincere people in ShuHe. It cost a little more to stay here but worth every penny. I liked Bivou, safely and quietly tucked in one of the streets. They kindly came out to the main road to pick us up. I wowed at the design of the room, modern security system, the story abt Bivou and their generous services.
We only stayed for 1 night and it was almost like home. i really liked the little spice garden, the books in the dining room, the comfy lounge, kittens on the roof and the breakfast with a view! Was impressed by the hardworking lady boss, friendly Gerard, sincere Joseph and sweet caring MaoMao. I would stay longer next time.

Dear KrisSwee,Yes, it’s a pity you couldn’t stay longer this time – but we’re definitely looking forward to hosting you again next time when you come back and in any case, we're glad that we managed to be part of your Lijiang adventure this time round and the nice chats we managed to have with you to share our story of how we came to call this place home.

The unique location of the Bivou tucked safely and quietly in the nature reserve zone of Shuhe Old Town, while just being minutes away from amenities and public transport to everywhere, does indeed make our hotel a good choice of base to explore the area around, or to just have a quiet retreat. Nonetheless, while Shuhe is itself an unbelievably picturesque mountain town, there is so much to discover in the mountains and valleys around us, and the changing seasons constantly offer up new vistas and festivals. So this definitely calls for another trip here soon!

Its a pretty good boutique hotel located a few mins away from Shuhe downtown. Hotel staff certainly goes out of their ways to make you feel welcome and the service level is on par with 4-5 star hotels. Room is small yet well designed with all the modern amenities you need. only thing that bugs me is the rooms seem to still have lingering smells of recent renovations/furnishings. Price on the higher end w/15 % service/tax included. Breakfast is OK with homemade jam & spanish omelette(wish it was served hot though)

Dear Yue0717, thank you so much for your feedback and also endorsement of much of what we do. Indeed, we do continually strive to offer a combination that’s unique: service that is top notch, while at the same time, authentically sincere and from the heart. It is admittedly a balance that is not easy to achieve – which is why feedback from every one of our guests is so important to us.

We too agree that a comforting and familiar breakfast, with our daily Western special served hot, while enjoying the view of Yulong Mountain at sunrise would be great. And we’re putting in place procedures to ensure that we achieve it 100% of the time. We’re also constantly seeking to upgrade ourselves, and to keep our facilities in good and working condition. On some very rare occasions, guests may find themselves in a newly-maintained room and notice a faint whiff of the work that preceded their stay. Please rest assured though, that The Bivou uses environmentally-friendly paints, and we do make the greatest effort to ensure that our guests are able to enjoy the mountain air as unadulterated as possible. Do come visit again – and if there’s anything at all about the room that you’re not satisfied with – do let us know at once and we’d happy to make the necessary adjustments to make sure that your stay is perfect.
