“Nice characteristic hotel in quiet area”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

The New Huifeng is a very characteristic place in Shuhe outside the busy touristic area. The rooms are very clean, really soft beds and nice swimming pool. We experienced a local party in front of our room and were asked to join dinner and drinking. Every evening at 9 the place was quit. Staff was friendly and helped booking train and taxi and had biking map to Baisha. English sometimes a bit weak. The swimming pool was clean and for breakfast and dinner you have to go outside because there's no restaurant. With all the restaurants within walking distance in Shuhe no problem. When you arrive by taxi ask for the parking place at the north part of Shuhe and or contact the hotel or speak chinese for the kast 5 minutes walk otherwise you can get lost.
Don't forget to climb at the roof balcony to take pictures, hopefully with blue sky.

Room Tip: Let the taxi contact the hotel for the right parking place and ask help for last 5 minutes walk

I thought I had submitted my review after our family stay last December/ New Year but seems it did not get processed and I promised a review based on this unique boutique hotel accommodation and sincere local hospitality. Very good location at the entrance of Shuhe village which is very quaint and great for walks. The "Inn" was totally new and we had a great 2 bedroom suite with lounge in the middle. Perfect for the family albeit next time I would try the loft suite with bathtub.
F&B is basic so try restaurants and cafés in the village like the Hong Kong cafe unless you have the budget for high end spots like the Banyan Tree just a 10 minute walk or. 5 minute can ride.
The front office/ guest relations staff are great and they will even arrange a Pu'er tea tasting and to buy a "cake " of it at reasonable prices. Interesting to go to Lijiang itself and wander the ancient village and try the new Indigo Hotel restaurant. Overall we had a great time with direct flights from Singapore and great value at the New Huifeng Inn which we preferred over the old Huifeng Inn.
We can certainly recommend this destination for a unique experience in China.

Room Tip: Try the loft suite

A new hotel that feels very boutique. Our room was lovely with a roof top balcony. Despite being told we could check in at 10am (which I thought was odd but I was more than happy to select that option), it turns out that you couldn't so we had to leave our bags and come back later.
Worth mentioning that the rooms looking onto the pool, despite being lovely will be disturbed by the music played at the bar and restaurant. Not great if you have children who are in bed at 7pm as it doesn't go off until after 10:30 sometimes 11 (despite being told it would be off by 9:30!). Still it didn't bother me that much that I felt the need to complain. It's just worth other travellers knowing if you're a light sleeper.
The food served at the restaurant was really tasty and a good option if you don't want/feel like wandering around town looking for somewhere. The food is chinese but they do a great curry chicken (very much like Katsu curry) and the lemon chicken is gorgeous!
The rooms and bathroom are cleaned to a really high standard and they have nice touches like fresh flowers and bowls of raisins and nuts. Didn't see a fridge as advertised but I'm sure they'd find one for you if required.
There is a supermarket if you head toward the car park (away from the centre of town) which stocks pretty much everything (including dodgy but drinkable Chinese red wine!)) lots of beer and soft drinks. No uht milk though (but the bakery's dotted around town do have small cartons of Dutch lady which is a safe milk substitute for little ones)
To sum. The hotel is a great find, perfectly located away from the bustling streets, fabulous rooms, great service. A few improvements such as keeping the music down and correcting the websites and search engines for check in details, but these aren't big in the scheme of things! Would highly recommend for lijiang if the Banyan tree is stretching the budget too far!

Room Tip: Choose a room in a courtyard away from the pool area.

This is a lovely hotel and the deluxe rooms are really lovely and clean and well-maintained. The pool provides a nice central courtyard for the hotel, although it was too cold for me to swim there in late April. The service was exceptional and the staff extremely helpful and lovely. We didn't eat at the restaurant as they weren't open when we wanted a late lunch, but it looked like a good place to relax, although the menu choice was limited. Everything about the rooms was great – the shower, bathroom, bed, mattress, cleanliness, creams/shower gels given etc. The reception area is really nice and we got maps and hints as to things to see. The only downside was the vehicle transport we arranged through the hotel, which was really disappointing. It was very expensive at about 600 yuan to get from Lijiang to Shaxi and then when we got to Shaxi the driver, despite us showing the hotel and the driver the name and location of our hotel many times, left us with our bags and bicycles in a completely different town to where we were staying. We then had to travel 4kms to where our hotel actually was. The hotel had confirmed with me that they showed the driver where we were going, and we had got the name and address of the hotel for them, so it was very frustrating that after paying that high fee and confirming these details, we were left in the middle of the main Shaxi centre when our hotel was in a different rural town. This may not be at all the hotel's fault, but might be good to confirm onward details to be sure things are communicated properly.

Our family of five stayed the weekend just before the October golden week. It was perfect. We rented at family suite which had two bedrooms and two bathrooms with a sitting room in between the bedrooms. Clean, safe and peaceful. It is a 3 minute walk to shopping and restaurants. They also have a washing machine that you can use for free.
DO NOT eat at the Szechuan hot pot restaurant on the Main Street; the meat they tried to pass of as beef was glowing orange. The Tibetan hot pot place was delicious!

Service
New Huifeng arranged for us a taxi to pick us up at the airport (RMB120). On arrival we realised that we have dropped our camera in the taxi and the staff assured us that they would contact the driver and we got our camera back within 15 mins. That night after arranging for transport to JDSM, we requested for an early breakfast at 7.45 am instead of 8 am. Staff kindly arranged for cook to come in earlier and also cooked three packet of fried rice(RMB 18 each) for our lunch at JDSM. Fried rice was delicious.

Breakfast
We were served a bowl of delicious noodle and a fried egg each. Unfortunately, the Ah Yi did not know how to operate the coffee machine and I did not get to drink my morning coffee.

Room
We stayed at the family suite 6201 which consists of two bedrooms both with attached toilet and a living room between the bedrooms. We noticed that they did not provide any coffee satchets in room although there is a kettle. Went to reception to ask for it and they could only provide the sweetened coffee satchets.

On our return from JDSM to collect our luggages from New Huifeng, we were so thankful that the staff has the initiative to offer us coffee and the coffee tasted so good

New Huifeng's advantage is that it is new and thus provides a more pleasant environment to stay in. Location is also good as taxi could drive us to entrance unlike some inns in old town which is not accessible to taxi.

We were meant to be staying in the Old Huifeng Inn but we arrived on a cold wet day. Our room was freezing, gaps around the door and a brick missing in the bathroom wall. The toilet door was also broken. It felt cold, damp and some of the fixtures and fittings were not that great. After checking in we decided to have a look at the New Huifeng Inn. It was much better and much more to our liking. We moved with the help of the staff and negotiated on payments. I expect if we had arrived on a warm sunny day we might have felt differently about the old Inn. As always it is down to personal choice and budget. We did not choose the more expensive rooms at the old inn so they might have been better. A heater was also offered for our room. Anyway we liked the New Inn. The rooms were new, clean, tidy and nicely furnished. We stayed in a standard room and yes it is more expensive than the old inn but you get what you pay for. The staff at both hotels are very good. Even with a language problems with most staff you can get by (hand signals and pointing to things works well!!). Jet speaks good English at the old Inn and I think it was Lou or Louis that can speak English at the New Inn. Use them as your contact and if you need anything just ask them. All staff are very helpful.
Jet from the old Inn was very helpful and arranged a van / car / driver for trips out. He also organised our transport to Shangri La. It seems wherever you stay in Shuhe or Lijiang they can find you a car and driver to do what you want. It is not a big deal.
We loved the Impression show and went up the less crowded Yak Meadow lift. If you want to visit the National Park, see the impression show and take a cable car this is how it works: First you have to pay to go into National Park. Once through the gate you then pay for the other things. So if you want to see the show you then go to that kiosk and pay. After the show use exit 1 and then pay for the lift you want to take. Park entrance 105 RMB + 20 RMB for the park Buses (cannot walk) 190 RMB for the Impression Show and 60 RMB for Yak Meadow (the Glacier is much more expensive). A park bus then takes you to your departure point. It is very expensive (we found all the National Parks and Mountain lifts on our China trip were expensive, so much so we did not do some of them) so budget a lot for entrance fees. The Impression show is not to be missed.
The road to Shangri La is not that good. They are building a motorway to Tiger Leaping Gorge and that will be much better when it is finished. At the moment you cross near the motorway construction on several occasions and the road becomes a track. Once passed Tiger Leaping Gorge it then winds its way up to Shangri La. With the help of Jet we took a car and driver to Shangri La with a stop at the Tiger Leaping Gorge view point (lots of steps so be aware or ask Jet or the driver to tell you exactly where you are going in TLG). Cost 800 RMB. For the journey back we took the Express bus cost 60 RMB each and took about 5 hours. The bus was ok. Long journey on twisty roads, stuck behind heavy lorries on narrow roads, hot coach but all in all ok. Might not do it more than once but it was a good saving.
Enjoyed staying in Shuhe rather than Lijiang. Very easy to catch a van / taxi for approx 40 RMB each way.
All in all we enjoyed our stay in Shuhe and the New Huifeng Inn. Jet is very good and can arrange anything you want. Hopefully the management realise how much of an asset he is to the hotel (big pay rise for him please!!!).

Room Tip: Could be noisy if they have a lot of guests staying. Some rooms overlook the reception, pool and res...
