Just returned from a fortnights holiday at the Hotel Albatros in Cavtat. Having stayed in Cavtat before at the Hotel Croatia we thought we would give this hotel a try. The location is superb looking out, as it does, over the bay and having its own beach access. Architecturally it is quite pleasant if a little "Titoesque" - the lounge in particular is rather dark mainly due to the furnishings and not there was not enough seating most evenings. However, overall it is quite stunning in a retro kind of way and really just needs a thoughtful and sympathetic refurbishment by the new owners. Beautiful gardens, very well maintained add to the ambiance. The rooms are quite large and the bathrooms generous with a nice deep bath and simply loads of hot water all the time. The hotel was exceptionally clean with public areas spotless. Maid service rather pushed and our room was frequently left until late afternoon before it was attended to initially but improved as the number of guests petered out latterly.
Food was well cooked and plentiful, lots different things to chose from and catering for most tastes. Slightly repetitive possibly but lots of fish, veg, salads, fruit and everything constantly replenished. Seating rather chaotic at first with no allocated table and we found ourselves having to clear away our own plates several times or go in search of a waiter for our drinks order. I agree with Steve M about problems with the bars and again this was due to insufficient staff for the job. On one occasion there was a queue of over thirty people with only one person serving. I understand that they had already dispensed with the temporary seasonal staff and the remainder were frequently overwhelmed when the hotel was full.
The hotel changed hands within 12 hours of our arrival and possibly the uncertainty that engendered combined with the end of season blues disturbed the staff and they were rather harassed and some decidedly grumpy. Reception in particular cold and taciturn. Quite unusual for the Croatians really. The exceptions were the entertainment team, bless them, always polite, never pushy, so hard working, friendly, interested and just simply the best.
Finally a word about the spa - for all you ladies who, like me, enjoy a spa treatment or three as part of your holiday - don't go to this one. I went to inquire about treatment and there was no literature/price list at all. The receptionist had zero interest in providing any or any information for that matter. I found the most delightful spa/treatments at the beauty center LAVANDA at Hotel Cavtat. Vinko and his wife Diane were not only wonderfully accomplished but also extraordinarily kind and helpful. I frequently have massages and Vinko (a trained and experienced sports physio/ masseur etc) gave me one of the best deep tissue massages I've ever had. Diane is a beautician and the facial was superb. In addition, you'll be pleased to know, the charges are quite reasonable and compare very favorably to other hotels/spas in the area. They even found time to give me an appointment at short notice before they went on holiday. Give yourselves a well deserved treat and try them - you won't regret it.
Finally the weather - we had a huge thunderstorm the first day and thereafter beautiful unbroken sunshine for the rest of the holiday. The sea was still warm enough for a pleasant swim.
